Namco going “Lucas crazy” after Soulcalibur IV

Earlier today in the last leg of the Games Convention in Leipzig, Germany, Namco Bandai held a small keynote speech with regards to where future downloadable content will be making an appearance in their recent PlayStation 3 releases. Since the début of Star Wars characters in Soulcalibur IV, the company has gone “Lucas crazy”, in the words of Kyushiro Takagi, CEO.

Quite what he meant by “Lucas crazy” can be found out after the jump.

First up, Takagi offered some teasing glimpses of future downloadable characters for Soulcalibur IV, displaying teaser posters on a giant projection screen behind him as he delivered his keynote. “You can probably guess who this is,” he winked as one particular slide appeared behind his head.

To massive applause, Takagi promised that the “other” big Lucasarts star was coming to Soulcalibur IV with his trademark whip and fedora in place, using half of Ivy’s weapons system to create a moveset based around the new weapon. Takagi refused to comment on other characters making appearances, despite emitting a huge Wookiee-like roar halfway through his response to questions on the subject.

He was quick to change the subject to the slightly older Ridge Racer 7, delivering promises of brand new downloadable content for a game long thought abandoned by the developer/publisher. Aside from offering up Star Wars musical scores to play as background music alongside the usual upbeat techno, a track set on the Wookiee planet of Kashyyyk was also confirmed for release in the middle of September.

Following this announcement the small collective of Star Wars fans in the crowd snorted and wheezed through a shower of phlegm that the developer had “gotten the dimensions of the forests all wrong”. Ignoring them, Takagi simply said that the track had “George’s blessing” and immediately silenced the overly nerdy critics.

Dammit, Namco. You sure do love your Lucas.
