Golf seems like a pretty a relaxing sport. I don’t hit the links too often, but I have seen it played on television. I did play once, but I spent more time slugging brews and driving the cart than I did swinging a club. However, I assume that if it can be played by senior citizens, it can’t be too strenuous.
Unfortunately, we Americans despise any form of exercise. For many, walking from the cart to the tee would be an arduous task. Luckily, for us burger-loving Americans, the sport can be played from the comfort of our living rooms. The only problem is that I find virtual golf to be as exciting as smacking myself in the face with a rubber mallet.
However, even I got excited when Sony revealed the newest addition to the “Hot Shots Golf: Out of Bounds” roster.
Apparently, Sony thinks there aren’t enough angry, violent Greeks in the Playstation 3 game. The company has announced, via Playstation.Blog, that Kratos, the god-slaying Spartan, will join the current roster of playable characters starting today. I guess even the murderous son of Zeus needs a break from dispatching Olympians.
As a “God of War” fanatic, I enjoy seeing Kratos wander outside his home in Greece. However, I really hope that Sony limits his appearances as a guest character. If we have learned anything from Nintendo’s portly plumber, it’s that there is such a thing as overkill. I am going to be pissed if Kratos stars in a kart racing game with Sly Cooper, Ratchet, Jak, Nariko and SackBoy. Actually, that sounds kind of awesome. I hope you are reading this Sony. I just gave you gold on a silver platter.
I must admit that the decision to add him to a golf game is rather odd. “Soul Calibur IV,” due to its focus on weapons-based violence, would have made a perfect home for the Ghost of Sparta. However, golf is not a violent sport (with the exception of those hilarious golf-club-over-the-knee moments). Kratos should be ripping birds in half, not earning birdies on the green. He doesn’t hit balls in holes. Kratos rips holes into people.
The Greek warrior will no doubt stick out like a sore thumb. Though, perhaps that is part of the appeal. The “Hot Shots Golf” franchise has never taken itself too seriously. Perhaps the seemingly absurd inclusion of Kratos will push the series’ goofiness to even higher levels. If Kratos can be a SackBoy, why not a golfer as well?
Those interested in Kratos’ golf skills merely need to download him when he becomes available today. I assume that he will be part of the already stacked North American PSN update, which also includes “Ratchet & Clank Future: Quest for Booty” and the “Force Unleashed” demo. SCEA associate producer Chris Hinojosa-Miranda, the author of the post, did not mention if there will be a charge attached to the download. However, Joystiq has reported that the download will cost a hefty $2.
Prepare yourself golf. You are about to be destroyed.
