Confirmed Again: MGS4 Not coming to the 360…

August 27th, 2008 · 10 Comments

Poor old Hideo Kojima. When he’s not creating overly-philosophical and preachy storylines in Metal Gear Solid, he’s being harassed about whether the latest game in the series will ever make it to the Xbox 360.

Well, he’s finally come clean.  He wants you to know that it IS NOT coming to the 360.

Get over it already.  More Kojima quotes and rationalizations, after the jump.

In an interview with Eurogamer, Kojima remarked that half of the questions he is asked at various press events relate to the 360, MGS4 and whether it will its their way to the Microsoft console. He’s getting kinda tired of it, as you can probably guess.

“In the near future I hope [gaming journalists will] ask me about Metal Gear, about us, about our future projects, and will stop caring about the hardware,” he noted wistfully. “what kind of disturbs me sometimes, because a lot of people ask me about this PS3/360 question, is that it’s not about the hardware - I want people to look at the game itself.” When asked why people divided themselves based on console ownership, Kojima commented that he hoped that “the day will come when people won’t do this,” essentially denouncing the very concept of a fanboy. Good on him!

In a quick defensive move, Kojima simply stated that MGS4 was on the PS3 because it was designed for it from the very start and because he owed most of his success to Metal Gear Solid’s sales on the original PlayStation. Listing the game as one of his personal favourites, the producer/director remarked that if it wasn’t for Metal Gear Solid’s success, he probably “wouldn’t be in Leipzig today or at this game convention.”

Naturally, Kojima being Kojima, he went off on a bit of a tangent, describing how surprised he was at Europe and America’s embracing of an “old fogey” action hero. However, he cited Western culture as a huge influence on Metal Gear Solid, which may explain why it was so successful in territories outside of Japan.

This personally comes as no surprise, as Kojima originally documented some of his favourite, most influential movies in the UK edition of the Official PlayStation Magazine back in 2002: these included war movies such as The Guns of Navarone and The Great Escape, Hitchcock classics such as North by Northwest and modern films such as Escape from New York, which especially helped define the character of Snake and even give him his name (as well as an alias in MGS2).

I’ve always found Kojima to be an inspiring, if occasionally dumbfounding, man to listen to. Often overly philosophical and perhaps viewing the glass as half-empty a little more than you’d expect from a man who’s produced a multimillion-selling videogame series (you only have to glance at some of the older entries on his public Konami blog, entitled Hideoblog) he’s nevertheless a truly interesting game creator, almost a household name, an icon among game developers and fans alike.

On a personal level, he’s one of the first people who made me want to work in the games industry, whether it’s writing or developing, or mixing the two in future. I’d wait in earnest for his next OPM column, eager to discover which film he’d write about next so I could track it down, watch it for myself, and see where the parallels lie between the film in question and the Metal Gear series. Sure, it was a little weird, but it was interesting to be on the receiving end of an insight into one of the craziest (yet at the same time, one of the sanest) game creators out there.

Oh dear, I’ve gone off on a bit of a tangent. To keep it short, Kojima’s inspiring and loves how you appreciate MGS4, but please, stop asking about the game coming to the 360. It’s not. End of story.

Kojima wishes people would stop asking about MGS4 on the 360 - Eurogamer

Yes, Kojima is a very strange yet smart man.

I think he has to accept that question the same way the celebrities have to accept the paparazzi. If he does not like the way of attention he gets he should stay away from press conferences and game shows-its way easier than telling 1000 Journalists what they are allowed to ask and what not-simple as that.

So, he’s upset by the overwhelming demand for his product? And his response to that demand is “shut up!” eh? And he’s sticking to the ps3 because he did well on ps2?

He may be good at the creative side of things, but I think he’s not looking so good from a business perspective.

@Riki: Koj said that MGS4 had been optimised for PS3 from the fround up and just wouldn’t work on the 360.

      Bitter much? :P

I see people say “Mgs4 is just a movie”, “MGS4 isnt a game too many cutscenes”….then those same people turn around and ask when will it come to the 360? Hypocrites.

anthonyjh: Feel free to buy one for me.

Sigh. I wasn’t whining that it should be on the 360, merely pointing out he is missing out on potential sales, and the best justification he can give is some over the top brand loyalty. Is sony paying konami to keep the game exclusive? If not, we know there are plenty of xbox owners who would gladly fork out piles of cash for the game. Supply and demand, econ 101, any of this sound vaguely familiar?

I agree with riki. He should look on the buiseness side. What with the xbox 360 more than double the ps3 in america(search console wars on wikipedia) it would be a great move.
Anyway, I saw the review and it didn’t do much for me…
(Ooooh s**t here come the mgs fanboys).

      @riki:
Also with the ps3 losing ground on the exclusive game front, it’s possible that he got paid…
