Rock the Vote 2008…for Insomniac

August 27th, 2008 · 3 Comments

I generally do not “Rock the Vote.” In fact, the 2004 presidential election was the last time I participated in a meaningful political race. Therefore, I feel a tad hypocritical telling a group of devoted readers to go out and vote. I find it hilariously similar to a bear telling another woodland creature not to defecate in the woods. However, as an SG writer, it is my duty to bring you the latest news in the industry.

Most young Americans seem somewhat averse to participating in the political process. We seem to avoid the privilege as if it was the Plague. Personally, I hate standing in line. Whatever the reason, there is a sizable chunk of the country that doesn’t vote unless it is for some singer on “American Idol.” Fear not, I am not going to encourage you to impact the future of our country. There is a more pressing matter at hand.

“Resistance 2″ box art, of course! Read on…

Insomniac Games needs some help. The company is currently toiling over the follow-up to “Resistance: Fall of Man,” but can’t seem to decide which cover art to slap on the front of the collector’s edition. When faced with a difficult decision, I always pull a random slip of paper from a hat. However, rather than leave things to chance, the company is enlisting the assistance of its loyal fans.

Ted Price, the president of Insomniac, told IGN:

While you may think developing the game is our biggest challenge at Insomniac, we agonize almost equally over important details like creating and choosing the box art. And this time, we’ve got three solid images that are making the decision especially difficult. We’re torn, and want to know what you think. So vote! We’ll be eagerly awaiting your feedback, as always.

Fortunately, for those with an aversion to sunlight, voting won’t require a trip into the scorching glare of the large star. IGN currently has a poll that will decide the eventual cover for the “Resistance 2″ Collector’s Edition. Check out the options below.

Personally, I favor the third option. I find it to be the most visually appealing due to its effective portrayal of Hale’s struggle with the Chimeran virus. It seems to suggest, through the positioning of the two images, that the American’s future is still up in the air. Will he turn or will he continue to fight the infection?

With that said, box art has an insignificant impact on my decision to purchase or not to purchase a game. There is probably some expert that says I am unappreciative of fine art, but I find gameplay, narrative and graphics to be far more important. Actually, aside from where the plastic case is manufactured, cover art is the last thing I consider when perusing the newest titles. After all, if I cared about cover art, I would never have played the original “Mega Man.”

Regardless of my apathy, it is nice to see that the folks at Insomniac are taking the decision seriously. “Resistance 2″ is vitally important to Sony and the Playstation 3; it seems that the company is doing all it can to ensure that the sci-fi first-person shooter is a hit.

I am not sure when the poll ends, but IGN reminds visitors that they “won’t be able to vote for long.” Therefore, if you want to voice your opinion, be sure to place your vote as soon as possible. Also, for those that enjoy marking on a calendar, the site has a countdown clock for the release of the “Resistance 2″ Collector’s Edition. The Chimeran invasion begins in just over 68 days.
