The Facebreaker Demo is out and it sucks. You can stop here and move on, but there’s so much more to this than me just dismissing it out of hand. You see, I really wanted to like this game. This game was on my radar from the word go. Initially, I had hoped that this would be a more of a “cartoony” Fight Night. A fun, arcadey boxer. Something different, yet similar to the best boxing game ever made: Fight Night Round 3.
Nope.
Find out why, after the jump.
Fight Night Round 3 for the Xbox 360, is, without question, the best boxing game of all time. Cry about Punch Out all you want, go back and play that game and prepare for disappointment. Fight Night was the real deal. Great analog controls, a deep customizable system for creating and maintaining your own boxer. Friggin Mohamed Ali. The bottom line was that it was just really fun. Fight Night was it. Then EA closed the Chicago Studio that made those games.
Before the next Fight Night was announced, when Facebreaker was first shown, I had high hopes. I thought, “EA, boxing game, cartoony… Ok, you’ve got me interested.” Sadly no. Facebreaker is really just a rudimentary fighting game. It’s like something that belongs on XBLA. There’s little skill involved, has three attacks and resembles boxing about as much as I resemble Dolph Lundgren.
There’s a high and a low attack along with a third, somewhat context sensitive attack. You block with the right trigger, and that’s about it. Oh, and did I mention that you can throw your opponents? Yeah… that sucks. This is not boxing. You also have the ability to dodge high if you hold down the high or low attack, while you’re getting attacked, but it’s so random that I don’t even know if I would call it part of the game. It’s completely necessary, mind you, but barely works. Let me explain.
Basically, you can pummel or be pummeled by button mashing, but if you’re getting pummeled, one of the only ways to escape is by holding down the high attack while getting hit by a high attack, which will then allow you to dodge and then counter attack. So your matches will go like this:
Button Mash, dodge, button mash, special move, button mash, dodge, button mash.
Oh, you can make your own character, but that works about as well as the whole game, so don’t expect much.
Final word: Kim Kardashian is a playable boxer. You know, the girl that’s famous for having a sex tape and a big ass? (Yes I stole that from the Soup. How could I not?)
Kim fracking Kardashian… That’s your cherry on top of this suck sundae.
Oh, and her ass isn’t even that big. That’s how bad the character creator is…

Looks like a whole load of meh…..
I wasn’t expecting much from this game to begin with, the demo didn’t change my mind either.
The demo was really poor. Wrote a blog last week about bad demos and it definitely fits in there.
The game seems to be nothing more than a button masher and the blocks and parrys really don’t seem to work very well. Was pretty disappointed by the natural motion too; after GTA4 I was desperate to see the physics implemented in a fighting game and the first one out of the gate still seemed pretty ragdoll-like.
The fact it was only one round and that seemed pretty short made downloading the game a complete waste of time.
SUPER PUNCH-OUT!!!
Man, and here I was somewhat looking forward to it. Ah well.
Hey lono, are you dismissing it after only playing it for a little bit? Kinda like too human
“Kim fracking Kardashian… That’s your cherry on top of this suck sundae.”
HAHA!
Only good thing is being able to play as Peter Moore.
Or pummel his face in.
to be honest, the only thing i thought was interesting about this game was the name. another waste of a cool title. like perfect dark.
I wouldnt expect anything less from EA they buy all competition and licences so they dont have to make good games, bottom line is EA sux, I wouldnt buy anything published buy EA they dont care about consumers, or competitionso F em……….
@dandubya: I played the hell out of the demo. Tried all the characters and even attempted to make my own character.
I played it for at least two hours… for a demo, that’s a long time. It just sucks.
From all the videos I have seen, this game looks to be just a button-masher. Though I admit that I have not played the demo.
Also agree – I expected a lot more with this demo, but its definitely crap. Especially with Soul Caliber IV out and Street Fighter + MK vs. DC on the way. No comparison.
there’s no way that this game is worth 60 bucks.
No freaking way.
Hmmm… telling by your reviews of late I should buy this games with no thought at all then?
haha fair enough lono, fair enough
When I heard of it I thought it would be an imitation of Fight Night, except, the characters are cartoony and the slow mo replays would show that with the face breaking and whatnot. I had no idea it was from EA, I thought the Chicago studio went off to make their own project based on their old fighting system without the Fight Night name. Sort of like Project O.R.I.G.I.N, well, same idea. I was like cool, considering that i saw the title and my mind automatically made up that story, I said I am buying. Just yesterday I saw some videos of it on Gametrailers and boy was I disappointing.
