Is CL the new LOL?

Short answer: no.

Long answer, after the jump.

Everybody knows that popular acronym ‘lol’ means languished otters lie, but recently many people have given the acronym a bad name, attributing it to the phrase ‘laugh out loud’. However that is not lol’s bigest problem. The main issue with ‘lol’ is that people are very rarely actually laughing out loud when they use it.

This problem has become very widespread and has actually formed the basis of all IM conversations:

Person 1: hey

Person 2: Hey

Person 1: hows u?

Person 2: gd u?

Person 1: yh gd thnx

[5 minutes pass]

Person 1: lol

Person 2: lol

Person 1: gd day?

Person 2: yh..lol

Person 1: lol

And so on and so forth.

As you can see, ‘lol’ has become a meaningless phrase merely used to fill awkward space. We here at SarcasticGamer.com want to restore ‘lol’ to its proper meaning so that it is only used when people actually laugh out loud.

I contacted the Sarcastic Gamer Research and Development Department and asked them to get right on it. After many months and much toiling over furnaces Sarcastic Gamer LabsTM can now reveal a new acronym that’s is sweeping the globe: cl.

It’s a ‘c’ followed by an ‘l’. Simple in theory but much harder to implement. Cl means ‘Conceptual Laughter’ - laughter that is merely a concept and not actually occurring. So the next time you feel like using ‘lol’ when not actually laughing, you should think again and use ‘cl’. And, on the off chance that you’re actually laughing, use that old favourite, ‘lol’.

Thank you for your time.

A long time ago “lol” actually meant “loser-on-line” to be used whenever a noon and/or loser came on. However, noobs decided it meant “laugh-out-loud” and began using it after every line. I can’t remember where I picked that little bit of info up. cl

CL I meant ‘noob’ on the first word second line. I’m trying to use your new acronym but it’s hard!

If you think lol is bad, what about rofl. I doubt anyone is actually rolling on the floor with laughter when they type that because it would be physically impossible. On the other hand, “lol” in dutch means “having fun” and that’s what I think of when I read and type it.

I never type lol unless I’m actually laughing out loud. As one might imagine, I never rofl either. Let’s raise the IQ of the Internet people!
