As you may well be aware, today was the day that the inexplicably huge wooden bars of the colossal Too Human review floodgates were arduously drawn back, by a small team of gruff gnomes, to release the perpetual gushing torrent of negativity that I’d expected ever since I tried the game’s demo. Despite a 10 year development cycle, it’s not looking good out there for Too Human, as reviewers jostle for a place to rip into the game’s lackluster co-op, bug ridden gameplay and dullifying story.
Still, can’t say I didn’t tell you.
As of writing, Too Human is stuck at, the altogether not too shabby score of, 67 on Metacritic and 68 on Gamerankings. Although, tucked away among those average scores is a 42 from 1UP, a 55 from Gamespot (though I suppose Silicon Knights weren’t advertising at the moment) and a 65 from OXM.
The general consensus seems to be that if you’re a fan of endlessly scourging the surface on a fictitious world for items and weapons that have better stats than yours, or get goosebumps from the idea of killing hundreds of enemies for 2 experience points, then you’ll find a lot to like in Too Human, otherwise, not so much.
In an interview with OXM, President and Founder of Silicon Knights, Denis Dyack explained how he has made a game that is ’so innovative and different’ that people ‘just don’t get it’. This generally reflects my feelings about the game industry as a whole: there is just too much innovation. I feel like I’m sitting on the floor in a room, while Denis Dyack keeps throwing new, fresh ideas at me, when all I really want to do is continue playing Need for Speed on my DS. Developers: if we can keep innovation to a minimum, then I might be able to understand your game and, heck, maybe even enjoy it.
In case you didn’t realize, that last bit was sarcasm.
Dyack went on to say that ‘it’s ironic, it just shows that human nature of if you don’t understand something, you immediately attack it’. Dyack is perhaps being a little bit hypocritical here, as I’m pretty sure you spend most of Too Human ruthlessly slashing your way through a barrage of foes, who you may not fully understand. For instance, that Goblin Archer that you just stabbed your sword through and slammed into wall, was just on her way to get some bread to feed her two starving children that are huddling together for warmth next to a single flickering candle, in a cold cold cave off to the north. Those children will now die as a direct result of attacking something you didn’t fully understand. Of course, it might just be that Too Human is not that great a game.
So what was that about a trilogy, Denis?

Despite all the negativity, I really want to give this game a shot. I would love to support the close-to-home devs out there. However, its largest appeal continues to be multiplayer, which leaves me on the curb.
If it were on PS3, I’d probably have grabbed it immediately and kicked a few of my friends until one of them conceded to grab a copy.. but as it is, the game is useless to me.
Wow… Honestly I don’t really understand where this vitriol comes from over this game…
It’s not like the games metacritic score is in the 40’s… Only three reviews on metacritic are under 60, the majority of reviews are 70 or above…
People’s hatred of this game defies logic.
Denis Dyack just needs to shut up. He is acting like such a spoiled, egotistical baby. I understand that he is proud of the game, but his presumption that people just don’t get the game is laughable.
Did you ever think Denis that some people just don’t like the game? Did you expect everyone on the planet to gush over it?
Dyack just needs to accept the fact that some people like the games and some don’t. It happens with tons and tons of games. Everyone has their own opinion. As long as you are proud of your work, who cares? That is unless Dyack is merely trying to convince himself.
I haven’t played the game, so I can’t offer an opinion on it, but I have heard enough about it to last me a lifetime. Can we please just drop this topic? It is beginning to get really annoying.
I agree with Lono. The media response to this game makes no sense. I’ll give you that I think the game was oversold, but hell does that justify the non-stop ripping with few valid points to back it?
Gotta say based on the demo alone I’m really looking forward to this game!
I’m not even sure what it is about the gameplay but I just find it very fresh and a whole lotta fun.
Needless to say I’m surprised by the review scores
If people dont understand a game you are doing something wrong, and its time to accept that mr. Dyack
I bought the game last night and have spent the whole day playing and liking it. Is it the best game I’ve ever bought, no. But it is a fun game. I don’t regret buying it new instead of used, unlike, oh LAIR.
I bought the game and I have to say…it is really good. It has the potential to be great, but the story is lacking slightly. You are left to assume to much, there should be more explanation in a couple of areas.
Also, the stupid death thing makes me mad. No matter what, I have to wait the 45 seconds to respawn.
Anyone notice the tab in the Cybernetics lab for buying armor and weapons for your character over Xbox Live? That’s a bright idea. I wonder how many freaks are going to spend 50 bucks on new armor for their “Too Human” character? (points at himself) Not saying it will be 50 bucks ’cause I don’t know how much it will be, just taking a wild guess.
The game, despite the eccentricity of Mr. Dyack, the game is a must buy in my opinion.
“there is just too much innovation” That’s the dumbest comment I’ve ever head in a while, are you retarded or something?
