Defending Wii Music?

August 21st, 2008 · 9 Comments

As a regular reader of this site you probably have already seen our Wii Music twisted trailer a couple of days ago. It seems that people kind of like it. The sarcasm was felt around the interwebs and most people agreed with our take wholeheartedly. Not all. There have been a few responses that have been in defense of this fine, fine game.

Really???

Do we need to go down the list of reasons why this game is going to smell like something you don’t want to step in? Before we begin, this is not a fanboy slamming the Wii, I won’t bring graphics or children’s games into it at all.

First off, if you are fan of music games, can you actually name a time when you would rather play Yankee Doodle over and over again verses Paint It Black on Guitar Hero? If you can, you either have horrible taste in music or you’re five years old and still crapping your pants.

Second, what sounds more appealing? Flailing your arms around like a fool hoping that you can create a crappy midi remix of a 200 hundred year old song, or shredding on one of the many customizable guitar designs out there. The lack of an actual drum set might be a little confusing. I’m not sure if you watched the Nintendo E3 press conference, but even the drumming “expert” failed… hilariously.

Let us not forget the lack of a singing aspect. The songs in Wii Music don’t even have lyrics for crying out loud. With Rock Band and Guitar Hero: World Tour (when it comes out) when you and your friends are in party mode, you can make one of them sing and laugh about it later. Or you can video tape it and put it all over the internet. It really is the little things in life that make it all worth it.

Song selection and game play or lack there of is more than enough evidence to prove that this is the D student of rhythm gaming. If you can bring up a reason why you would play this game, I’m all ears. Don’t say, “my kids”. I’m talking about the hardcore gamer inside you that screams, ” I want to play Wii Music!” If that voice actually exists, your previous hardcore craving must have been electronic poker.

That’s right electronic poker, I just called you out.

your kidding right? they might as well blindfold themselves, get two twigs and pop in a CD. maybe thats where nintendo got the idea, at a kids birthday party. on the plus side at least nintendo is going towards a more musical gaming future.

I also don’t see how this is defendable. Unless you’ve seen some awesome new gameplay that Nintendo kept a deep, dark secret. Because Wii Flail looks like complete crap and this is from a big Nintendo fan.

Even kids would have more fun actually having a plastic guitar in there hands than randomly flapping there arms around…

the only problem with the games that you mentioned is that even though the other games are better, the wii game will be easier. I can’t play guitar hero or rock band because I a musician and the notes have to be “played” about a 1/4 of a second early to register in the game at the right time.

      @ nintendoteen:

That’s an odd excuse. I’m not saying you’re wrong, it’s just that I’m a musician and I consider myself pretty good at Guitar Hero.

      @ nintendoteen
I am also a musician, I play three instruments. The piano, guitar, and trumpet. Nontheless, I play on expert on every instrument in RB/GH. (Except for drums but hey that’s hard/expert :P)
Still I’ve never noticed a real problem with the notes.. Plus you can adjust it to suit you, via the lag fix. However, perhaps your problem is that you have to hit it early because you can’t register the notes fast enough? I know newer players usually have more trouble reacting to new notes as opposed to people who have put more time into it.

Frankly, I dont see the appeal…. but Im talking about all three… Rockband, Guitar Hero, or WiiMusic.

But that aside, why would someone buy this when they can get Guitar Hero 3, Rockband or the newest versions of both when they are released…. ON THE SAME SYSTEM!

WiiMusic is a better MUSIC game than a game such as Guitar Hero because WiiMusic is about MUSIC, not pushing buttons and flicking a switch as fast as you can.

However, Guitar Hero is a better game overall because it has challenge. Thats my story and I’m sticking to it.
