Following the appeal by over 52,000 Diablo fans to re-invent the art style of the latest game in the RPG series, Blizzard has pledged to evaluate the current style of the game and make it more appealing to its fanbase. In an online petition hosted on the PetitionOnline website, fans called for Diablo III’s art style to be ‘darkened’ with “Gothic and obscure scenarios” and a generally “macabre, dark and realistic art style” instead of the current “cartoonish art direction, obviously influenced by the Warcraft universe”.

For the world exclusive first screenshot of the new “darker” direction for Diablo III, continue reading through the link below. Be warned though: this is big. Really big.

Since announcing that the rallying of Diablo fans has been “overwhelming” and that a new art style would be created, Blizzard Entertainment’s graphics team have toiled away to recreate the former darker style so favoured by the previous games of the series. Upon completion of the design of an outdoor, rural area of the game’s map, our source at Blizzard leaked us an exclusive screenshot of this new “darker” art style and we’ve lined it up with a shot of the original art style below.

Hot damn! I’m impressed, Blizzard. This new darker art style certainly looks a lot better. The differences are subtle but overall the whole thing looks spectacular. I’m sure the Diablo fan base will be more than pleased with the new direction you’ve decided to take: bravo!
