A Dear John letter to Valve

Editor’s note: Here’s another submission from the SG Community.  Check it out.  Congratulations Alex O.

Valve, what happened? I had such high hopes for Team Fortress 2 on the 360. It was your first big console game. Sure, it started out strong, and shared some laughs, but as our relationship became more and more strained because of that dirty whore, I call “lag,” I started to turn to other things.  I turned to other games to take up my time. Games like Call of Duty 4, Halo 3, and even Bionic Commando: Rearmed for heaven`s sake. These games are all whore free…

Is there still hope for us? Find out how after the jump…

Since I found out that the TF2 content updates would be coming to the 360, I have been at war with myself.  While I’m happy that console players will be able to finally get their hands on this new content, is it really worth it?

The Orange Box has been very successful on 360, sales wise, but the lack of content and the lag issues have turned many, including myself away from the console iteration of TF2. I’ve gone back to my PC mistress and logged over 150 hours on her version of TF2, enjoying it’s free content updates, and a much larger community.

Sure now you’re saying that you’re trying to make things right with console owners.  You say that you made them wait this long because of Microsoft. Because you were “forced” to charge for the update by Microsoft, but  wanted to give real value for the update. That sounds nice and all, but the dirty lag whore still plagues me in Team Fortress 2 on the 360 and its dying community has made me believe that you didn’t think this  through.

We know you can make more money on Steam and keep control over when the updates are released, so why would you care?

Valve, I know it may be smart for you to wait until all the class updates are done and bundle them all together. Or maybe just abandon the TF2 community on the 360 and put all of your focus on Left 4 Dead?  Maybe, but don’t leave me hanging again, otherwise I will be purchasing the PC version of Left 4 Dead.

Sincerely,

Your jilted former “game buddy”

Alex O.

I’ve been on TF2 the last two nights and in several 16 player games with no lag. I’m a newcomer to it so I have no prior experience with what was there but is fine this week. If you want to gripe about the 12-year-old, non-stop swearing, racist, non-communicative community. COMPLETELY LEGIT GRIPE. But it appears to me the lag is an old wives tale. As for the DLC, who knows . . . Someone has to pay for the bandwidth. Not saying that it should be us but I can see microsoft not wanting to serve it up on their network for free.

      totally disagree JCblough.

tried it a couple of weeks back, played in a couple of games, no problem but still had issues of people getting kicked out of games or lagging out. It’s still an issue IMO.

It’s okay to be wrong man – someone has to do it :-)

Finding a really good group of people might be hard at first but my friends list is full of TF2 players that I play with on a regular basis, it’s easily my favourite game on the 360. Unless it’s ranked I never really have any trouble finding a game I want. Still play it about 2-3 times a week on the 360, even though I bought the PC version.

      I don’t think it’s vavle’s fault,

With steam, they patch almost everyday, small patches, and most don’t notice, but with the xbox, everything has to be authorized. If Microsoft had a better patching plan it would work better.

be glad you have the xbox360 version, us Ps3 owners have a bigger debate waging on our shoulders. A real problem, not mild obstructions, like the ones you pointed out in this article.

No, the original Half-Life for PS2 was.

Valve is a PC developer, always has been, always will be.
Besides, TF2 is much better on the PC, in addition to all the amazing updates, you get custom content and a Mouse and Keyboard.

Ya I keep trying it on the 360 and keep getting kicked out. And I also have spent 100+ on the PC version.

I have to disagree. I have personally logged about 100 hrs on TF2 on the 360. Originally I had alot of lag issues. Maybe they are more evident in the ranked matches which I don’t play. I hit a laggy game about once a night (out of two hours of gameplay? I think that is acceptable) but that is more of an issue with the host, not the game I am pretty sure.

Let’s look at the past. When a game had a lead sku on the Xbox, but had a port for PS2, 9 out of 10 times the port was crappy.

So when a game is developed on PC, by very famous PC developers, why would you ever expect a port to be good? When are ports ever good? Rarely.

SO OMG! You act like buying the game for PC is a cardinal sin. It’s a freakin’ miracle, the game is made for PC by PC developers, and if the the 360 port SUCKS, then don’t be shocked. Thank your lucky stars you bought the PC version and are playing it the way Valve intends you to.
