Xbox 360 Avatars Confirmed (with new Dashboard to boot)

July 14th, 2008 · 13 Comments

Just a few minutes ago at the time of writing, Microsoft have confirmed that Avatars will be coming to the Xbox 360 in the next console update following rumours last month with a brand new 3D user interface also making an appearance. Kotaku’s got some news on these, after the jump.

Designed by Rare, the developers behind GoldenEye on the N64 and Banjo Kazooie, the Avatars (or Microsoft Miis, as I still call them with much relish) will be fully customisable and will be playable in games, just like a certain other customisable character on another console. The next incarnation of movie quiz game Scene It will include Avatar support. “Thousands and thousands” of hair, clothes and accessories will be available over time on the Xblox LIVE Marketplace.

To complement the brand new 3D avatars replacing the original pictures on Gamercards (the avatars now becoming the standard image on your ‘card) the 360 Dashboard is receiving an overhaul, taking on a brand new form and doing away with the various sliding categories we currently know (and love?). The sliders will be replaced with a cleaner interface reminiscent of the Singstore on the PS3 incarnation of SingStar and that nifty function on iPods that lets you flick through the album art, whose name I forget.

Looks even more childish now. Fantastic. At least when I crank up my PS3 and guests drop buy I look like I’m playing an adult gaming system.

My 360 has been fun and all, but I liked my dashboard how it was. I just don’t like the silly little avatars. Make him look like a real person for God’s sake. Just grinding my gears I suppose, apparently this is great news to the witless populace, but I’m not buying into it (not that I have a choice or ever will).

Lol good job MS not only did you rip-off the Mii’s but you also ripped off SingStar and PS EyeToy.

Lame. . . will the accesories, hair and whatnot be for sale on XBLM for points or free? This is a crisis!

Well this sucks, If I wanted avatars I would buy a Wii. And whats wrong with the old dashboard?

Can we NOT download ths “patch” when it comes out.

@BladeSniper: They will cost you points.

@Nightkiller93: we need to step away from the “X ripped off Y” train and sign up for the “Let’s see if they actually do it BETTER” Express. Jesus Christ… do you realize if doing something someone else already did was forbidden, none of us would’ve EVER BEEN BORN! ;)

It sounds like the Dashboard will still be there, tucked away from immediate sight (or maybe not, depending on your personal preferences), you don’t have to use the 3D avatars or the camera… you can still just use the thing to play the 25% of the games library rated M.

Remember, if we ONLY allowed innovation, none of the systems would be what they are today.

I wonder what happens to all the themes that I’ve bought, I think it’ll be dumb if all the themes that MS pushed down our throats go away for a Wii copied Mii. Of course MS will charge a ton of MS points for everything that you need to outfit your Mii … I mean avatar.

When this patch is released, i might just have to let my 360 collect dust while i play my ps3.
