Sony Pulls 2.4 Update!

July 2nd, 2008 at 6:12 pm · 11 Comments

SCEA has pulled the 2.4 update due to a large amount of frantic posters on the Offical Playstation message boards complaining about issues with 2.40 firmware. Reports have come in stating that the players are not able to reach the XMB after reboot, with the Sony “wave” appearing on bootup but no menu appearing afterwards. Controllers also cannot connect, and systems are effectively bricked.

One way to overcome this issue is removing your hard drive and reformatting it using your PC, but this will also remove all saved data. Including games, profiles, and downloadable content.

While some people are reporting issues, others are running fine after the update. It has yet to be confirmed what PS3 types are affected, but seriously looks like it might be a case of Russian roulette.

So if you too are experiencing what the Sony Forums are calling is… “The Eternal Wave of Emptiness”, Sony is aware of the problem… and I am sure they will be working around the clock to fix this issue. At least from a PR point of view.

So for now I am giving Sony a “Platinum Trophy” for this royal F*** up.

Here’s the PSForums thread full of user complaints.

HAHAHA!!!! I’m not sure how ISP’s work in any other country, but here in Australia once you go over you monthly limit (in my case 40 gig) you get idled back to dial up speeds, which I always do well before the end of my billing month. The only reason I did not upgrade to 2.40 is because I have no bandwidth left, which for once may have been a good thing ;)

    • I hear down the guinea pig grapevine that it was a server side issue. Part of the update wasn’t fully downloaded to some systems, therefore when the system tried to install it, it failed and couldn’t revert to it’s previous FW version. That is a bricking if I’ve ever heard of it, but it’s a somewhat simple resolve, just a pain in the ass of Sony.

And here I was thinking that SONY weren’t fully testing their updates before they let them go.

Heh. “Limited number of calls from consumers” on the official PS blog. Talk about PR spin. We probably all crashed their phone lines too.

I honestly thought that this was fiction when I saw about formatting the hard drive. But then I looked at the tags and realised.

@TR0Y J There could be any number of reasons causing problems outside of Sony’s scope of QA. The most likely reason being after market HDDs.

I for one downloaded it the night before last without issue. It works great, which is a rare treat for a 60GB owner like myself. The firmware itself is very nice, a big step in the right direction (Pretty much right back to where they were at E3 2006)

Even the problems caused for those who have them, can be fixed manually provided you have the proper resources.

sony must have thought rrod was some type of selling point and wanted their own fatal flaw to even things out with bill gates and his product testing
