Finally getting to see footage of Resistance 2’s Leviathan was great. Simply hearing about a 300-foot tall monster isn’t that big of a deal for someone who played Shadow of the Colossus.
Agree with you wholeheartedly Rothbart. Mercenaries 2 is going to be insane. I don’t know if you saw the demo shown on G4, but at the end, there was some huge nuke-sized explosion when one of the characters called in an air strike. It was absurd. The person playing the game had to move the camera around to see the entirety of the mushroom cloud.

As regards the bet between Rothbart and Frawlz, I actually think there’s a solid chance Frawlz may be proven right.
If we look at the major selling games of this generation on the PS3 and 360, you will find games like GTA IV, Halo 3, COD 4. Casual games were more likely to be recognized through solid sales in the last generation, as the PS2 was successful to the point that it was taken up by the casual market.
To a great extent, this difference this time around is the Wii. Whether it deserves it or not, clever marketing and brand strength have driven it as the decided “casual gamer’s console of choice”.
The primary market for the PS3 and 360 have proven (To the best of my knowledge) to be mainly hardcore. Now this is obviously dependent on whether Killzone 2 is a good game, but assuming it is, it may very well find itself in a better position to sell to a greater percentage of the PS3 market.
Now of course a major factor could be how strongly Sony push the Little Big Planet brand, and they appear to be putting a lot of weight behind it at present. This may be the decisive factor, as regardless of the hardcore fan’s oft-noted fear of “the cute” and to some extent platformers, there is the possibility that, combined with assumed excellent reviews, media and word of mouth will push LBP to financial success.
Now to be fair, one of the largest selling franchises in gaming is a casual one, The Sims. However, I’m going to take that out of consideration, as that is a PC game, and as a whole not subject to the competition that the Wii is offering in the casual market. The PC has far better penetration in the casual market than any console, it’s just a matter of getting them gaming (As The Sims managed, with it’s widespread appeal)
Anyway, before I lose myself too deeply in disjointed ramblings, I think it is very possible that Killzone 2 may have higher total sales. It has two major things against it to my mind, in that the brand is somewhat tainted in the mind of hardcore gamers, as the last one was usually regarded as somewhat mediocre, though certainly not a failure. It is yet to be seen to what degree this will affect its overall reception.
Secondly, it has major competition in its own market, where Little Big Planet is something of an entity unto itself. Resistance 2 for example, is a major challenge to total penetration of the PS3 customer-base.
Certainly will be interested in seeing who wins on this one, my only real point is that the bet is not necessarily so stacked as you all gave the impression of (At least, as I interpreted it).
Still, pleasure to listen to, look forward to the next one.
Also, hello all, first time posting here. Nice to be here.
