Hello and welcome to Weekly Wonder #3.

I can’t think of anything else to say so hit the jump for this weeks discussion inspiring question.

With E3 finished we want to know what you thought of the convention. Who put out the best press conference and who had the worst? Were you disappointed that some games weren’t shown? If so which ones? What did you think was the biggest piece of news? Do you still like E3 since its downsizing, or do you think that another games convention like TGS will take centre stage in the future?

As usual just post your answers in the comment box below.

I know I’ll be called a fanboy for this, but I thought that Sony’s press conference was really impressive. Despite what others have said, I think that Jack Trenton’s calm and somewhat nervous demeanor really showed how down to earth and realistic he was about the future of Playstation. Especially compared to the utter kiddy crap-fest that was Nintendo this year, his attitude was much more human and appealing to the average gamer.
Another reason that I think Sony was the big winner is because they finally are coming out with the big hits, not in the ‘future’ but with tangible and near release dates. LBP, Resistance 2, and Home (even if as a beta) are all coming this fall. Plus, we have a whole bunch of other great exclusives to look forward to like MAG (which if done right will be epic), inFAMOUS, and Killzone 2 next year.
Also, PSN is looking much more appealing than this time last year, and its pretty much near the functionality of XBL (minus the game invites and cross game chat). With the new store, in game XMB, and trophies, PSN is much less a hodge podge collection of lobbies and trailers, and more of a place for sharing content and finally connecting with your friends. And like I said, once Home hits this fall, XBL will definitely have something to fear from PSN.
So yeah, that’s my 2 cents of why Sony made a really good splash at E3 this year.

I am going to have to agree in saying that the Sony Press Conference was the best in show. Some of the games that people touted at the 360 conference were indeed multiplatform, so if Sony went first, they would have had those AND what they showed. Sony’s objective was to deliever content and thats what they did, on all fronts.

The biggest announcement was the FFXIII multiplat, but I dont think that it in itself defines the 360 conference, or when it is released, the console.

I was surprised that legendary didn’t show. It’s supposed to com out in the fall. That game will be a sleeper for sure since it has NO hype. My biggest let down was no the no Halo news. Besides that I could’ve cared less for the whole show. It just seems so bland now. The big news for me though was Far Cry editor and co-op in HAWX.

Microsofts press conference was the best, imo. Nintendos obviously the worst.

I was looking forward to hearing about the new controllers for x360 and ps3 that have been rumored; the wii motion sensor copies lol. - though, like i said… they’ve only been ‘roumered’.

Sony had a good conference; they showed games that were exclusive to the console. Nintendo was a let down and Microsoft did a good job too although I wanted to see the rumored new controllers for sony/microsoft but all in all twas good

microstoft. In fact microsoft was so good they even decided to hold back a big release. If any of you didnt know bungie was told to hold back there release and if anyone was on the bungie forms hey would certainly know how much caos and hype was caused for this release.
I also liked how naruto is being released on all three consoles. So far the playstation has won graphics wise but xbox has out done them majorly in story mode.

Ok I am going to get this over with. Nintendo’s press conference was the biggest disappointment of E3. Here are the reasons:
1.) They promised to show some stuff for Core gamers, which we didn’t see anything of.
      2.) Cammie Dunaway
3.) The games that they showed off were aimed at casual gamers, most of which probably don’t watch, or maybe even heard of E3.
4.) The presentation of Wii music took way to much time out of the press conference, not to mention it sucked.
5.) The only games that really interested me were Animal Crossing and Wii Sports Resort, that should tell you enough about the Press conference.

I can only hope that Nintendo unveils some good stuff at TGS otherwise they are completely screwed.

Microsoft blew away the competition with their announcement of FF XIII. That has seriously killed any chance Sony had of dramtically increasing their user base when that game ships.

Sony’s showing was piss poor. Too much emphasis on dying formats and not enough showing of quality PS3 titles. A 2 second mention of Home ordering us to “be patient” is not what I wanted and the sad part of their whole keynote was that most talked about thing was how they presented their financials using LBP.

Nintendo are going to keep on rolling about in money but it’s clear that the hardcore audience is not where they are at any more. I can see Nintendo eventually giving up E3 as they continue to move further away from that demographic. I sold my Wii a few months after launch because I could tell it just wasn’t for gamers.

I think Sony had the best, and Nintendo worst.
Sony was creative with their presentation (LBP), they were entertaining, people laughed and were having a good time, their presentation were by far the best. Though there wasn’t much new from sony (exept from MAG), they boosted peoples confidence in the “not too far away” titles, which is what Sony really have to do now.

Microsoft is trying so hard to capture the casual gamer, that they forgot the hardcore. And a result of that, is copying the most successful PS Casual franchises. (Lips - Singstar, You’re In the Movies - EyeToy, SceneIt? - Buzz), it’s okay to copy, if you do something extra, I didn’t see that from Microsoft.

And Nintendo… yeah… That was just humiliating. And I pray they will never let Cammie on stage again, she was just so horrible. Nintendo also forgot the hardcore gamers, though they might want to wait to a better time to reveal the stuff we all want. They did tell us that the Zelda and Mario teams were working on something, it’s just a matter of time.

I agree with most of the above nintendo shouldnt have bothered to trun up.

Microsoft forgot the hardcore fan base they have built up, also I think the new dashboard is a downgrade and the avatars a way of saying we didnt no what else to do. But I am looking forwards to Fable 2.

And sony I belive were the best simply because they showed games I have been waiting for, for what seems like an eternity now A.K.A LBP Killzone 2 and Motorstorm Pacific Rift.

It’s a little tough to say who gave the best press conference. Clearly it wasn’t Nintendo, who really should fire everyone involved in that bomb. While Sony had a solid line up and presented it will thanks to LBP, Microsoft got more attention for it’s flashier finale.

People are saying that MS forgot the hardcore gamer, but I think the emphasis of their conference was on the JRPGs they managed to snag and how they were planning on cutting deep into that section of Sony’s market (something they’ve never tried to do before). Last gen if you didn’t have a PS2 you didn’t get to play any JRPGs, and there weren’t many western ones for consoles until recently, and that gave Sony a pretty good boost. Likewise Sony didn’t have any shooters but Kill Zone, and while I’m intrigued at KZ2 I will never ever play the first one again. It was a horrible game. I think in this conference both companies were looking at trying to take some of the other’s market.

As for who was better I’ll say this: the point of a press conference is to get people excited, and the generate buzz /get attention. To that end I’d say that microsoft’s press conference was better. If you have a solid line up without anything special that’s fine, but you aren’t going to get people talking about you as much as the conference that presents something nobody expected but a lot of people wanted. Because of the sensationality of the FFXIII announcement I’d say MS won. What was the most talked about thing durring E3? Hell even people who don’t pay attention to these things heard about it. While MS may not have had the best line up, they had the best conference.

Woa, it’s amazing how Sony fanboys really know how to appear as normal while they’re inside PO for the punch they received from Square Enix.
