Kotaku’s reported yesterday some rumoured specifications of the third iteration of the PlayStation Portable (not PSP2). Bundled with the details were some apparent photos of the new machine, and the whole thing actually looks on the good side of plausible.
Hit the jump for ‘photos’ and those ‘details’ in full.
PSP-3000 (possibly so-called due to it being the third design of the PlayStation Portable, the Slim-and-Lite’s model number being PSP-2000) will apparently feature a built-in microphone to the side of the volume buttons, a redesigned ‘HOME’ button similar to the PS button found on SIXAXIS and DualShock 3 PS3 controllers and some other small cosmetic changes, such as a slimmer, scratchproof silver ring on the back of the console.

However, despite all the fancy cosmetic changes, it’s essentially a Slim-and-Lite, with a UMD drive and everything else present and correct - it’s no PSP2. This only begs the question: where is the PSP2? Admittedly the PSP is still going strong, especially with games such as Resistance: Retribution around the corner, but is there really need for SKU upon SKU upon SKU of a console barely 3 years into its lifecycle? It’s the 360 all over again! Well, it is if the roomah is true.

A logical move against piracy. Whatever features they introduce will be a smokescreen to redesign the battery port and block Pandora’s Battery. The PSP-2000 was already in mass production and even out in Japan before Pandora’s Battery showed up so their hands were tied. Now is a good time to try and fix it.
Pandora’s Battery = Universal PSP unbricker/hacker, for those who arent in the know.

I think you’re right Keith. I know many people that have bought a PSP and a big memory stick, got it hacked, and never bought a game after.
PSP games are so easy to get ahold of on the net; it’s made so simple for them.
Very logical, if sony can really stop it

My luck that 3 days after my purchase of the system, rumors hit about the third iteration. Oh well, maybe I’ll hack mine just out of spite.
