PS3 firmware 2.42 is out…but what exactly is it doing?

July 30th, 2008 · 6 Comments

If there’s one of many, many things Sony are notorious for (among other things) it’s not telling us much. If they’re not telling us why Europe’s shunned when it comes to network content (and I’ve tried asking so many times) they’re not telling us the full story of what’s coming in a large number of the firmware updates that both the PS3 and PSP receive from time to time.

Firmware 2.42, released today for the PS3, is no different: hit the jump for more.

According to the US PlayStation.Blog, firmware 2.42 “improves the playback quality of some PLAYSTATION 3 and PlayStation format software”. According to Sony Computer Entertainment Japan’s website, firmware 2.42 works on “some PLAYSTATION® 3 and PlayStation® software standards, to improve the quality of work”, with some liberties taken with Google’s translation work.

ThreeSpeech isn’t telling me anything because it’s not working, which is probably a blessing rather than a curse, but the UK PlayStation site reports that “the playback quality of some PLAYSTATION 3 and PlayStation format software has been improved.”

That’s fantastic. What does that mean though? Does it mean Grand Theft Auto IV will be less buggy? Other games will be less prone to crashing? What about something random and unannounced, such as the remaining amount of a file to be downloaded being displayed in the XMB?

Not sure if I’ve noticed anything except from the latter, and it’s got me stumped. What’s the deal here, Sony? What’s the huge issue with just telling us things straight? It’s not like giving us handy little widgets here and there, such as the aforementioned estimated download timer, is something to be ashamed of.

If you’re not going to do a Microsoft and factor all of these little gadgets and gizmos into periodic updates throughout the year, you might as well tell us what’s going into the updates that seem to pop along whenever you feel like giving them to us. I don’t mind them being spur-of-the-moment sort of things, but it’d be nice if you at least told us what was going into them to make them that little bit more justifiable.

Those handy sources, lacking in any useful information, follow in full.

I read (but have not verified) that Trophies load faster. Also, there could still be hooks in there for Life with Playstation which was recently said to be launching “before the end of the month” tick, tock, tick, tock…

It would appear the rumor about the Home beta getting its own spot on the XMB don’t apply to the 2.42 firmware though, so who knows…

Been trying to download this sh*t last night, kept getting errors and disconnecting from the servers. Got it up to 33% this morning before disconnecting again. Almost makes me want to pay for xbox live.

I presume that loading time for trophies is the few seconds you have to wait for it to “sync”. If so this may be one of the minor patches I appreciate.
