I never had any problems with Firmware update 2.40. Actually, since the update, my PS3 has been downloading things much faster from the Playstation store. I hope that trend continues.

Lono, 2.41 is perfectly safe to install having got it on my system already. Since you didn’t upgrade to 2.40 you’ll be fine. If not, I’ll personally send you my head on a plate.

Lono: Its hard to compare the two, one is hardware and the other is software. I have never tried this on the 360 but there are a few guides on the Internet explaining how someone would “flash” a corrupt update off there 360, I’m not sure on the success rate.

They did similar things with the PSP, you had to send it back when it bricked so they could reflash it, of course it lead to there downfall since someone left the flash files on the memory stick and hackers got a hold of it.

I laugh at this whole thing… Swapping HDD’s just to get a firmware update? Sending your entire PS3 back to Sony, just to get a firmware update???

What the hell? This went totally FUBAR for Sony… I’m actually afraid to install 2.41… I think I’ll wait a day or two to see if there’s any other “issues.”

But of course, the advantage is that hard drives for the PS3 are as cheap as laptop hard drives because..well, they are laptop hard drives. While sending your PS3 away to have your new firmware installed can be a little bit of a weird move, at least Sony are offering to fix the consoles, look at it that way. Courier picks your PS3 up, arrives at Sony the next day, installed, sent back, bish-bash-bosh, done.

I don’t think anyone who frequents SG is dumb enough to have been laid up by the trivial problems caused by 2.40.

If you call customer service, they will tell you to swap in a dummy HDD to install the firmware update and then swap back your original HDD. This will result in no data lost.

If you cannot perform the operation on your own (for lack of another HDD), Sony will do it for you.

This is of course one of the pitfalls of allowing your userbase their own choice of HDD. Microsoft deals with these problems on PC every single day. To prevent the issues with their console, they sell a standard issue HDD at a price we all agree is extortion.
