Prepare for your Sony Experience with Sarcastic Gamer

July 28th, 2008 at 11:00 am · 24 Comments

As a tri-console owner, meaning that I own an Xbox 360, PS3, and a Wii, I feel like I’m getting the best of every world. For those that haven’t picked up a “next-gen” console or “current-gen” for all of you “gen” snobs, you may want to know what the heck you’re getting yourself into.

So, here I am to save the day. Click the jump to learn everything you’ll ever need to know about being a Sony PS3 owner. Check out my Microsoft experience here.  Check back tomorrow so I can prepare you for your Nintendo Experience.

Enjoy!

So you’re a HD freak with your fancy, schmancy 1080p and surround sound, theater-quality set up that’s put you in debt for the next five years. Now, you’re looking for a HD movie player and also love video games and want to go in debt just a bit more… Well then friend, Sony has something for you.  The PS3 is one beefy little black box that should satiate your HD desires.  Here’s what you can expect as a new Sony owner.

  • The console is freaking huge.  Hope you have room for this behemoth cuz it’s taking up some real estate in your entertainment center.
  • Downloading…
  • Throw away your sixaxis controller.  Once you go rumble, there’s no reason to ever use the pack-in controller.  It’s garbage.  Mo money, mo money, mo money!
  • Downloading…
  • Blu-ray movies are crazy expensive.  Get ready to pay 30 to 40 bucks on that awesome copy of The Mummy on Blu-Ray that you just HAD to have.  Mo money, mo money, mo money!
  • Installing…
  • Get ready to use, or not use, a bunch of functions that only KIND-OF work… Remote play with your PSP?  Check, except when it’s laggy, or if you have your network connections in perfect alignment, which is to say, never.
  • Installing…
  • PSN only kind-of works. Are you looking for Online play that feels like Offline play? Get ready for that silent, serene and spiritual online multiplayer game where nobody talks and you play like it’s 1997!  Hell yeah! That’s what you paid 600 bucks for!
  • Seriously, finding someone online that has a mic is like discovering a unicorn.
  • Installing… You’ll see.

Well, there you have it. The experience is a waiting game that we, as Sony PS3 owners have come to terms with. The question is, will you? Stick around for my Nintendo Experience editorial on Tuesday.

The only place you should ever buy Blu-ray movies from is Amazon.com. They sell most films for $20. That includes new releases like the aforementioned “The Mummy.”

    • Keith K says:

The early days of PSN gaming was like a Verizon commercial.

      “Can you hear me now?”
      “Can you hear me now?”

      “Can you hear me now?”

I die a little bit inside every time I see someone calls PS3 “Huge”. I own both PS3 and X360 and let me tell ya- that power cord box X360 has is GIGANTICAL and makes f$%^ load of heat. Keep looking for that near PS3- just slim cables. Imagine Microsoft putting that huge gray brick into their machine- RROD after 10 minutes of play anyone?
But yes, patches are just TOO big and install TOO slow.

    • I’ve found that people obsessed with the size of the PS3 are typically obsessed with the size of everything *wink, wink*

If you want to note anything about the PS3, note its weight… it’s only marginally larger than a 360. I mean how are you measuring its size? I’ve got mine sitting right next to my 360 and it’s no more than 2″ taller… Someone seems might obsessed with two inches. LOL!

On a side note, that was a horrible description of what to expect with a PS3. If you go all “awesome games, awesome controller, awesome online service” for the 360 and don’t rip on it where necessary, I might just have to… to… okay, it’s a secret. I don’t want to give you to time to plan a counter… I’ll be awaiting the 360 edition.

    • Yamster says:

The PS3 IS huge though, even I’ll admit that. Like the old PS2s though, everything is spaced out a little and there’s room for components to breathe in order to prevent overheating..especially with that massive, hellaloud fan.

    • Lono says:

Already did it Rothbart, you sony fanboy you… It was published on Thursday.

    • Yamster says:

@Rothbart: I was personally referring to the mass of the thing – 5kg is pretty goddamned heavy compared to the 360’s 3.5!

    • instant says:

      The downloading isn’t so bad….

    • @Lono: I don’t read this site… it sucks. Can you paraphrase what you said on Thursday? LOL! j/k

UPDATE: Okay, I take back my initial concerns… you mentioned how amazingly unreliable the 360 is… and that there are a LOT of crap games (second only to the Wii in proportion.)

Proceed with Nintendo… I’ll be waiting!

    • sir ancient says:

You forget many things you must…wait, wait and wait for some good games. You will see rarely an RPG or an JRPG on sonys ps3.Sony makes gorgeous games that are unique like Ico,SotC ,currently working on ICO 3,Folklore,Pixeljunk monster(psn),africa(only japan),Flow,Flower…in few words fresh ideas and gameplay structures.

    • sir ancient says:

I must admit that XBOX LIVE is better for online than PSN.Install times arent bad you must be only a little bit patient. If you like ps3 exclusive shooters you will be uberhappy with Killzone 2,Resistance 2,MAG,SOCOM,Warhawk,Hardware 2…and many others.

    • Ratchet8clank says:

Blu-ray movies arent that expensive. HD-DVD were about just as much, and I highly doubt that you would be complaining about that if they had won the format wars.

    • Lono says:

Heck yeah I would Ratchet8Clank. 30 to 40 bucks is waaay too expensive for a movie. HD-DVD or otherwise.

    • Havok Saunders says:

As a side note, Ken Kutaragi looks like he grills a mean steak.

    • Real Gambler says:

Luckily, this is sarcastic as usual…

Complaining about “your fancy, schmancy 1080p and surround sound, theater-quality set up that’s put you in debt for the next five years.” and yet proudly saying he own $1500 worth of consoles!

Saying the console is huge? Must not own one!

BluRay expensive? About $2 more usually at my local store. Cost of the support and dev included : )

Extra features? Don’t have to use them if you’re low tech. That fancy surround system most still play in stereo too…

Like to hear 13 year old curse and bitch all day long? No me.

Installing? That surround system must still be in the box! So what if you have to spend 3 minutes installing a software.

Hope the author will find a better job than writing sarcastic articles like that, because paying for all that stuff will set him up for way more than 5 years. I would say the next 20 years : )

    • sogard says:

      Nice one Gambler.

yeah all the whining, racists on Live scared me away . All my friends I play with on PSN got mics and we actually know how to use them!

    • Lono says:

@Real Gambler: Sorry dude, but all I do is write sarcastic articles… Hence the name of the site…

      Sarcasticgamer.com!

      Facepalm!

    • paulsvoboda says:

      thank you lono…
this and the other xbox article made my day beautiful

    • Havok Saunders says:

I can’t wait to see the Wii article. Especially after E3.

    • Echelon says:

when i play cod4 almost every one has a mic… most ppl have had a mic for a while

    • typhoon says:

ahh come on its not that bad people can start to get really anoying on xbox live and even on computer ps3 is good with only a few ppl with mics u dont have to listen to randoms screaming spam into your ears there not that big remember guy the xbox u know the thing that wayed about 15kg and looked like sumone had tipped a bucket of multen plastic into a card board box yeaaa and the xbox 360 still has that freaking huge power pack which never fits down the little slot u leave between the wall and the tv unit plus don’t be such a scruge just go buy 8mb internet and d/l the updates in a few minutes .. whimps

    • PIG says:

Yup, that just about sums up the PS3 experience.

I’m trying to figure out where the “sarcasm” is in this article?

      And yes, I own a PS3.

      -Remote play is “laggy”.

      -PSN needs work.

-Zero communication in almost every single online game. Also, Bluetooth headsets sound and function like crap. So here I am using this state of the art system while having to run a USB headset cable across the floor from my entertainment system to my couch.

-The Sixaxis is “garbage”. DualShock 3 is a must buy.

-Game installs are getting “old”. And load times on games like Heavenly Sword are “aweful”.

Am I glad I own one? Yes.

I love Blu-Ray movies and the games that I have played have been very enjoyable. Not to mention that the PSN “downloadable” games have “trumped” the offerings of XBLA for quite some time now.

I like the crossbar menu interface and I like how things are not as “restricted”. For instance a friend can put his account on my PS3 and I can play any game that he owns as long as his account is on my PS3. That is just awesome.

My biggest complaint lies with online play. If I am interested in a game that is heavy on “online play”, the PS3 version will not be considered (unless its exclusive).

    • Orakga says:

Sadly, many of his criticisms are valid. Especially when it comes to online/VoIP. I guess this happens when you have a giant software company backing a console. (so, by that account, the PS3 and Wii BOTH suck online/VoIP)

      But $30-40 BluRay discs?
Come on Lono, when was the last time you refreshed your webpages?

I just bought the First SEASON Boxset of “Mad Men” for $31. And “Planet Earth” cost me $60 (that’s 12 hours of 1080p bliss for you). And the last three movie features I bought were all around $20. (that’s Casino Royale, Batman: Gotham Night and Sunshine)

Whatever the PS3 lacks on the Online/VoIP side, it completely makes up for it with its BluRay, so don’t lump that in together with the genuinely sucky components.

      Otherwise I agree.

    • ApplesBasic says:

The ps3 isnt as big as people say, it fits on my tiny ass shelf, which shows its not the ‘behemoth’ you say it is.
Though, I do admit, its hard to find a lot of people PUBLICLY that have a mic, but everyone on my friends list has a mic, and we have long conversations.
And I do admit the downloading and installing are a huge pain, I wish they would patch that, though, that patch would need a download and an install to get it patched.
