Update: Rock Band 2 news still flowing freely

July 6th, 2008 · 7 Comments

This week has been a great for fans of Harmonix’s “Rock Band” platform.

On Monday, it was revealed that “Rock Band 2″ would be released in September for the Xbox 360 and later this year for the Playstation 3, Wii and Playstation 2.

Tuesday’s episode of X-Play aired a screenshot that was apparently taken from the “Rock Band 2″ in-game set list (9 new tracks revealed). A second list of leaked songs hit the Internet Wednesday, when a user on the ScoreHero forums, who claimed to have played the highly-anticipated sequel, posted 11 additional songs.

The full list of songs can be found here.

Alex Rigopulos, the CEO of Harmonix, recently spoke with CNN about the upcoming sequel to one of 2007’s best games.

Hit the jump to find out what he had to say.

In a previous article, found here, I questioned whether or not “Rock Band 2″ would allow gamers to create their own music (a confirmed feature in “Guitar Hero: World Tour”). Rigopulos, apparently not one to leave fans in the dark, told CNN that “Rock Band 2″ would not follow in Activision’s footsteps. Activision is the publisher of “Guitar Hero: World Tour”.

We’re taking a radically different approach to that problem. It’s something we wanted to take more time to do it right. It’s actually something we’re not focused on in Rock Band 2. We’re really focused on other areas related to the music and bringing the community together.

This news might disappoint some fans, but it doesn’t bother me at all. Based on what I have read (I have not seen the music creator in action), the process of composing music in “Guitar Hero: World Tour” seems, extremely laborious. I doubt I have the patience or skill required to produce anything but utter garbage.

There will probably be some quality tunes available on GH Tunes (where you can download songs created by other gamers). However, I am willing to bet that most of the user-generated content for “Guitar Hero: World Tour” will be comparable to cow feces. Besides, I would much rather play a tune by AC/DC (rumored to be in “Rock Band 2″) than a song created by 12-year-old Jimmy Jimmyson.

User-generated is a great idea, but I would probably forgo the in-game studio in favor of songs from established musicians.

There is more waiting for you on the next page.

      >Is Harmonix going to spill the beans on the entire Rock Band set list at E3?

Of course not. It’s been standard procedure since Guitar Hero II to pace the track revelations, between announcements, “slips of the tongue” and other “leaks” (such as preorder packages).

Except GH3, which got the whole setlist leaked months before release… and no one believed it.

Yea, but to me GH3’s set sucked. I don’t want to play some song made famous by RATM, just to be covered by that guy with blond hair and a reality show on VH1.

Aww, to hell with this oversaturated genre.Correct me if I’m wrong but wasn’t Rock Band supposed to be a single gaming set fuelled by the stream of DLC that could last a couple of years?

Apparently,as opposed to Guitar Hero “that wants to milk all your cash” by buying a new game and new guitar each year?

The only reason why Rock Band received so much acclaim is because it was made by HMX and offered something new.But trust me,the series is going to roll downhill from now on.

PS: I know that DLC will be compatible, but that raises the question how long till Rock Band 3 drops this feature because it isn’t worth effort nor money.

I don’t think RB3 will drop the feature; Harmonix care about their fanbase a lot if they’re taking requested features on-board during game development. It guarantees some permanent fans of the company if they listen to what people have to say.

i reckon these rhythm-based games are reaching their peak. Theres only so much you can do with these games, and i think a few years down the line there won’t be much else to do.

I could be wrong, but what else can these companies do? They’ve already expanded from just the guitar.

I’d like to see these games last longer, and maybe they will, but i just can’t think of much more they could add to the games apart from new songs

Well the good news is Rock Band 1 should see a price drop. I always seem to buy these types of games when a sequel gets announced and they drop the price of the original.

Holy crap, this is fantastic. I am an early adopter and I’m ecstatic about the idea that I can download all of Rock Band 1’s content for free. Then I only have to boot up one CD and can access all the Rock Band songs. And if they were to add new features to Rock Band 2 or 3 or whatever, I’d be able to play the original songs with the newer hardware or graphics or better hammer on/pull off tweaking or whatever they would choose to add.

If you’ve ever went back to GH2 on your PS2 just to play Freebird and realized what a step back it is compared to your 360, you know the convenience of this new feature.
