Nintendo cares about core gamers? Since when?

Did you happen to see Nintendo’s E3 press conference? I did. It was complete and utter horse piss. Not only did the company not announce “Dead Rising: Chop Til You Drop” or the new “Pikmin” game, but it completely neglected upcoming releases for WiiWare and the Virtual Console.

Satoru Iwata, Nintendo’s president, has already apologized to those core gamers who were disappointed with the company’s lack of announcements. Cammie Dunaway, whose E3 performance drew much ire from gamers, recently assured the core audience that they are still important to the company.

I like being reminded that I am special every once in a while. However, when I hear it over and over, it starts to get old. Unfortunately, this practice is likely to continue as Nintendo has once again decided to give its core consumers the proverbial middle finger.

Another noticeable absence from E3 was a storage solution for the Wii. Nintendo fans with a propensity for downloading VC and WiiWare games have been longing for additional storage space to supplement the console’s 512 MB internal memory. Nintendo has acknowledged that some gamers might be low on space, but has yet to offer a solution. Many had hoped that an announcement would come at E3. It did not.

In a recent interview with Joystiq, Nintendo spokesman Charlie Scibetta continued the tradition of acknowledging the company’s awareness of the problem, but offered no new information.

What’s great about the songs and the games that you can download is that the system remembers that you did that. So if you need to clear off space off your SD card, you can. It’s not like once you delete them you’ve lost them forever and you have to pay for them again. It’s just a matter of managing the space you do have and keeping the stuff on there that you play the most while clearing up when you want to bring new stuff on.

For a company that is lauded for its originality and creativity, Nintendo sure does like to recycle its excuses (and franchises).

Nintendo seems convinced that SD cards are the answer to gamers’ storage problems. The company is constantly touting the ability to store games on the tiny devices.

The problem with this current system is that the games can’t be played directly off the SD card. They have to be copied from the device to the console. This is a laborious and tedious process. It would probably be quicker to dust off an actual NES.

My big problem with Nintendo is that the company continually says they care about core gamers, but seem disinterested in actually backing up those words.

Actions speak louder than words Nintendo. While you might be saying core gamers are important, your actions relay a completely different message. Make me believe Nintendo.

Unfortunately, us geeks and otaku probably won’t be getting a storage solution any time soon. Luckily, with the exception of “Mega Man 9″ and the first two games in the franchise, it doesn’t appear that Nintendo plans on releasing any significant titles for the VC or WiiWare any time soon. Therefore, you probably won’t need to worry about storage space.

    • Well, once you start asking digital camera manufacturers to come out with a camera USB hard drive maybe you’ll have a point.

      Laborious? Seriously?

      Tedious, yes.
      Time-consuming, yes.
      Frustrating, yes.
      Laborious, not so much.

    • I’ve got my fair share of VC content. If Nintendo offered me a way to get more than 2GB of storage, I’d jump on that like a fat kid on a donut. For some reason, though, they seem content to discourage me from using the WVC service to its full potential.

Is the existing flash memory intigrated into the wii’s motherboard, or could it theoretically be removed and replaced with a much bigger flash drive? I have an 8gb myself.

Nintendo don’t care about core gamers? Is that why they invest billions of yen (Japanese Currency; most people who go on SG are too stupid to get that) to give us titles such as Super Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime, Twilight Princess, Mario Kart Wii, and Super Smash Brothers Brawl?

If they don’t care about core gamers, why do they keep on making games for them?

You just mentioned five games. The Wii has been out almost two years. That is less than 3 games a year. That is pathetic compared to the lineups for the 360 and PS3. Sure PS3 was lacking strong titles in the beginning, but Sony has finally righted the ship.

Nintendo is doing the bare minimum because they know that Mario and Zelda fans (like myself) will always buy the company’s consoles because those games aren’t available on the 360 or PS3. It is truly pathetic.

I agree with Saunders. In all reality just like any other business out there Nintendo cares first and foremost about making money. They are making a boatload of money right now cashing in off more casual gamers so that is where their focus is right now. In all honesty I don’t think Nintendo needs to do anything but lip service to the hardcore gamer and they will still make their money, which seems to be exactly what they are doing.
