Nintendo reveals more Balance Board tricks

July 15th, 2008 · 3 Comments

Fresh from Nintendo’s E3 press conference in Los Angeles comes news of Nintendo’s future plans with the Balance Board, first seen in Wii Fit. One of the first games to use the Balance Board as a game controller will be Shaun White Snowboarding, coming exclusively to the Wii console.

Hit the jump for some more info.

Nintendo PR Cammie Dunaway took the stage to announce that she broke her wrist snowboarding a while back, and needed a helping hand in practicing her skills on the piste. Enter snowboarding champion Shaun White, who steps up to the Wii Balance Board, Wiimote in hand, to introduce Shaun White Snowboarding. Controlling his boarder using tilts and bending on the Board, Shaun makes his rider pick up speed towards a ramp before using the Wiimote to try and pull off a backflip, mistiming it and leaving his rider a broken wreck.

Still, Shaun White’s PR-smile face actually looked like he was enjoying himself (sort of) and he was all eager when it came to remarking that riding the Balance Board felt like a real snowboard because he could lean forward to go faster. Forget the fact that this would be a simple thing to implement and smacks of common sense, but hey, Shaun White said so! Shaun White said the Wii was cool! Shaun White was probably waiting for his fee but hey!

I will admit, behind the PR schmuck (and watching a 40 year old PR woman get wicked crazy on a Balance Board) Shaun White Snowboarding does look fun. It’s good to see the Balance Board getting some good, proper uses, other than pretending to provide exercise.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like it’s getting much better use outside of Snowboarding. Yet another Rayman Raving Rabbids was revealed in a compilation of “brand new games” (as said by Nintendo’s regular PR man Reggie) which turned out to be Star Wars, Call of Duty and the Rayman title. No details were revealed, but man, come on. Where’s the “new”?

Just when the Balance Board was looking appealing, Rayman has ruined it all. Oh well.

Sigh…as a Nintendo fan, I was really looking forward to an exiting new or rejuvenated IP this year, but aside from Wii Music (which I can’t wait to get my hands on), there isn’t really anything to get excited about or anything we didn’t already know was coming.

Damn you, Ubisoft. RRR 3 probably isn’t even gonna have Rayman in it…

At least us Wii fans have the Conduit, Star Wars: Clone Wars, Face Breaker, Animal Crossing: City Folk and Shaun White to look forward to.
