Everything you ever wanted to know about Little Big Planet for the PS3

Out of all the games scheduled to be hoisted up for praise at this years E3, only one had me twitching for more details. That game, of course, is Little Big Planet. You know, that game I brazenly said would be the PS3’s game of the year. With some stellar new gameplay videos and some great stage demo’s, I feel pretty justified in my GOTY declaration.

Check out all the latest details on LBP after the jump!

Before I say anything else about LBP, one major feature comes immediately to mind, the lobby. Not only can you customize your lobby in terms of looks, you can bring up your PSN friends list in-game. See who is online, invite them to play with you, customize your avatar, voice chat (sac-boy lip-syncs), the works, all in-game. See who is playing what level online, smart matchmaking, drop in drop out, all of it easy peasy.

There will be a set of levels that consist of more than 60 tutorials, teaching creators the ropes and at the same time unlock all the tools you’ll need to create anything you want. Or, you can play through the game’s created levels and unlock the tools that way as well as discover tons of pre-fabricated items that you can use right away.

Players can collaborate in-game to build levels, creating and moving objects together. Pull up the behind-the-scenes wiring view to see just how the mechanics of a level work. Players can “copyright” their created objects should they choose to do so. Which means you can still share the content, but other players can’t see how the object works.

The levels are, for now, limited to 4 people. That said, you can mix and match, with two people playing at home on one PS3 with two others coming in online, or any variation on that idea. You can “tag” user created levels and track your favorite players/creators. Sharing anything you create could not be easier.

The community itself will help moderate content using in-game tools. Take a picture of questionable content, explain why it is so horribly vulgar or vile using some sweet preset tags and then upload the pic so that the LBP community can stand in judgment.

Own a Playstation Eye? Drop your ugly mug on sac-boy! You can customize sac-boy to a crazy level with the content that ships with the game or create your own, allowing your sac-boy to look totally unique. The sheer amount of content that will come with the game is already epic, and when you factor in what gamers will create themselves…well lets just say I may have to attend LBPA (Little Big Planet Anonymous).

LBP will be released with a barrage of trophy support for every facet of the game. Trophy’s for scores, level design, you name it. You can unlock templates to get you started creating your own levels or start from scratch. Damn near everything is customizable, right down to the in-game music. As of yet you cannot bring in your own mp3 playlist, but you can tweak/remix in-game music for certain effects.

Bounce in and out of levels online with friends at will. Create and alter levels in-game. Build everything to your particular tastes (short levels, long levels, wide, tall, lots of vehicles, traps, music etc…).The reasons why this game kicks so much ass are almost endless and it’s a platformer for Pete’s sake!!!

LBP is easily the most customizable and yet extremely user friendly game I have ever seen. The “kiddie” aspect of the game no longer bothers me in the slightest. The title incorporates everything from six-axis (shaking off a daze for example), to robust multiplayer options, to character and level customization never before seen anywhere else. While I am still really looking forward to Spore, LBP is definitely FAR FAR ahead in terms of how hyped I am.

The fact that I could recreate the newly unveiled “Construction Yard” level (which had some really sweet weight and momentum based gameplay) myself is straight up mind-boggling! I love sac-boy! Pun away haters!
