Soul Calibur IV is shaping up quite nicely. It will be the first game in the franchise to feature online play (the XBLA version of Soul Calibur has online leaderboards, but not online multiplayer). Character creation returns, but with more options than before. Namco has even included three characters from a galaxy far, far away (Darth Vader, Yoda and Vader’s apprentice and reportedly two more that have remained a secret so far.). Mix all of those elements into a pot, and you have a possible candidate for best fighting game of 2008.
Except for one minor thing…
Last week, a rumor hit the Internet that Kratos from the God of War franchise, would be a playable character in the PS3 version of Soul Calibur IV.
Fast forward one week, and yet another rumor has surfaced. However, this rumor is far more sinister than the previous one. In fact, it’s less awesome and more like a swift kick to the balls. Late yesterday, Kotaku reported a rumor that the PS3 version of Soul Calibur IV, and possibly the 360 version, will require a hard drive installation.
According to the popular blog, based on information from yesasia.com, the newest iteration of Namco’s popular brawler will eat up a total of 8.5 GB of PS3 hard drive space (6.5 GB for the install and 2 GB for save data). The initial report did not attach a numerical value to the possible 360 installation.
Namco was quick to respond to the rumor.
A representative told Kotaku:
“Those numbers are not accurate and are significantly overblown. The actual amount of space for the Soulcalibur IV install and save data file are inline with other games requiring this feature.”
While this should provide gamers (particularly PS3 owners) with some sense of relief, the representative did confirm that the game would require a hard drive install. It is unclear as to which games with mandatory installs the source was referring to in his statement. However, I would bet those other games include Haze, Devil May Cry 4 and Metal Gear Solid 4. All three had large hard drive installs (4 GB, 5 GB and 4.6 GB, respectively).

harsh comment, because he never mentioned TIME as a problem. Criticizing the fact that most of the harddrive is used for game installment instead of extra dlc, music, videos, demos and other cool stuff would be “whining” when it was a common practice on ALL consoles-but since SONYs competitors leave the decision how to fill their hdd/flash to the customers he has a right to be a little upset
