Cliff Belszinski and his team at Comic-Con have let slip a few morsels of info about Epic’s Gears of War 2. Intrigued? Well it’s a bit cold out here so I’m just going to cross this jump (it’s warmer on the other side), why not follow?

The first exciting piece of news, is that Gears of War 2 will feature unlocks such as new multiplayer characters. However, these are no ordinary unlocks, instead these are linked unlocks! Oh right, that doesn’t excite you. Well let me at least explain what they are.

The unlocks in Gears of War 2 will reveal their contents depending on what achievements you have from the original Gears of War. So, for example: if you have finished the campaign on Hardcore in the original Gears, then you’ll be able to play as General RAAM (great name, that) in Gears of War 2 multiplayer. Other linked unlocks include unlocking Carmine for completing Act 1 and being able to play as Kim if you’ve collected 10 COG Tags, both in the original Gears of War.

For me, this shouldn’t be a problem. I have 900 points out of the original Gears and so hopefully, I’ll be able to be able to play as a floating donkey, or something awesome like that. I think it’s a pretty good idea. If you haven’t played the original, then so what? You don’t get a few unlocks - it doesn’t matter. But if you have played through the first game you deserve re-COG-nition (PUN!), especially for the harder difficulties, and some extra characters seem the perfect way to do it. Of course, this will nab Epic a few sales for new 360 users that haven’t yet played Gears and were planning on waiting for Gears 2.
