E3 Wanted LowDown

After playing Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk, which both took suckatude to previously unimaginable heights, what little faith I had in movie tie-in games died. You push a game to be released at the same time as a movie and you get garbage. Which is why the recent announcement by developer GRIN is so special. Rather than give us yet another game that only a blind mother could love, GRIN is working on a Wanted movie tie-in game that, obviously, will NOT be limited by a film release window. Considering how wicked the comic book and the film were (storyline and acting notwithstanding), I would definitely be interested in this title.

Check out all the Wanted details after the jump!

Rather than simply recap what happened in the film, GRIN’s game will be a continuation of what transpired in the film, picking up just as the events in the movie came to a head. Gamers will play as Wesley Gibson, who for those of you who have NOT seen this film, is a young man who recently joined a secret society of assassins who can do all sorts of insane things, like curve bullets around things and more.

The movie was flat out ludicrous when it came to the action sequences so gamers can expect that same type of over-the-top, “as if” style mayhem to play a large part in the game. From what I’ve been able to glean so far about the game, it sounds pretty freakin cool.

The cover system seems to be a major factor in Wanted. Crouch behind a snack cart and push it around with a simple button press. Rather than force you to stand and run to the next cover location, Wanted will allow for a smooth transition (rolling or jumping over furniture for example) between cover points. Pull off the transition well and you’ll earn “assassin points” that let you trigger, you guessed it, “Assassin Mode.” Assassin Mode apparently allows you to eliminate any stress or anxiety and allows you to blaze any who stand in your way in a slightly altered form of the action shooter standard “slow motion.”

The game will have the usual action shooter MUST HAVES, like semi-destructible environments and objects, and of course, allow you to curve your bullets just like in the film. Press and hold a button to bring up a targeting arc, wait for the arc to change from red (no shot) to white (locked on), and let that baby rip! Or you can just fire blindly from behind cover. The game won’t just be about gunplay however. Melee will still play its part, through the use of a concealed knife (stealth kills) and the ability to grab enemies and use them as human shields.

Wanted will not feature any multiplayer however, which sucks. Apparently the developer doesn’t want to make the game “too complicated” for movie fans to easily pick up and play, which doesn’t really make much sense to me. Still there is something to be said for a good ol’fashion single player action shooter campaign. Stranglehold got a fair amount of play from me and I’d like to think Wanted will too.

Scheduled for release later this year for PC, 360 and PS3, I really hope this game can deliver. Some unique gameplay, apparently beautiful graphics, and Wanted film level uber violence should make this title one hell of a ride. Or yet another piece of Hollywood inspired offal.

I wish Angelina’s character was still around…playing co-op with her would be…well…hot!

Wow they really are making a wanted game? The movie was awesome, so I hope the game will be awesome as well. I wonder if we will get to be the ultimate camper and snipe from like 30 miles away like in the movie :)
