E3 Video Recap: Sony Press Conference

July 16th, 2008 at 2:40 am · 18 Comments

Dave and I had the distinct privilege of witnessing more than 50 lcd TV’s hooked up in perfect unison for Sony’s E3 Press Conference.  For a few minutes it seemed as though the gorgeous set might be the highlight of the event.  But then we saw Resistance 2.

Seriously Dave, did you like ANYTHING that sony showed? Are you on the MS payroll? Nice work on the video content anyway…both recaps were informative….even if Dave is looking to get hired by MS’s PR department.

Thanks guys nice wrap up i didn’t get to see the Sony press conference so was good to get your thoughts and see some screen shots

    • MacMan2001 says:

doesn’t make up for the “loss” of FF 13 tho ;) haha

tho the vid store was a nice surprise.

But that, Resistance 2, new PSN games, new PS3 bundle and a frikkin PS2 bundle (!!!) aren’t really what i was expecting. Where was Killzone 2?

    • Prophet says:

Because Killzone 2 is a later release (and the games are somewhat similar) they did not hype it on purpose…Sony wanted to give Resistance 2 the spotlight for now.

    • appleface69 says:

whats the game with 256 players is it like exclusive for the PS3 or is it multiplatform

    • Prophet says:

Its called MAG. PS3 exclusive. Squad based, and supposedly squad leaders are based on game skill and leadership quality…however they are going to determine that…

    • iwantmyps3 says:

looks like another win for the ps3 and sony.

by next year that stain of a system the xbot 360 should be gone. after that taking out the wii will be easy.

      ps3 wins e3

    • SpiralGray says:

Perhaps Dave and Microsoft both forgot, but this is an expo for the press and industry, not the fans. The objective of the press conference should be to convey information to the press and industry insiders.

    • Anski says:

Hundreds of people battles in a persistent world with leveling and stats*is* something we have seen before…

      PlanetSide!

    • Lono says:

MAG looks like it could be cool.

    • Krelith says:

MAG looks pretty impressive, but unless people start using headsets on their PS3s it’s going to be impossible to play. I swear to god I’m the only brit that knows how to use bluetooth!

    • MacMan2001 says:

hey iwantmyps3 – did you not see Xbox’s conference at E3? Only, you must have missed it to claim Sony had “won” E3.

      FF13 cough.

    • GB_IE2 says:

Hey I hate ot say it but the M$ conference was not all that great. It was all sequals (I know Sony had that too but at least there was SOMETHING NEW) and on top of that they just proved me right all along that the Xbox live interface blew ass! One more thing of interest is how in the world (with the current LIVE being so slow) are they going to speed up the new live with all the new crap. Oh well I guess we would see.

      About E3:
It’s not for the fans anymore! Back then when we would watch E3 footage you would hear alot of crowd screaming and the like because FANS were there so that can attest to the lack of MAJOR announcements.

      About FFXIII:
That was big yes but that did not save M$ mediocre press conference, I’m sorry. There was NOTHING NEW for Hardcore gamers to clamor over and on top of that I had a feeling FFXIII will go Multi platform. Versus still is all Sony so people can still breathe right lol.

Overall I say Sony won it because they had more games that had more appeal (or we already did not know a boatload about them already). Microsoft had an OK conference! But it was all the same stuff and it was nothing new (FFXIII was interesting but again that does not save the rest of the conference from mediocrity.

      Nintendo’s just plain out sucked

    • LOL @ People accusing Dave of being on the MS payroll.

Seriously, look at the big 360 announcements… Gears 2 coming this year (we knew that was coming), Fable II (we knew that was coming), some other games we largely knew were coming… to me, the MS presser won hands down for BIGGEST SURPRISES.

Namely, the retooling of the dashboard which was IMO sorely needed.

Also, the FF XIII announcement, although it’s not nearly as bad as THEY would have you believe. FF XIII is still PS3 exclusive for Japan and likely won’t hit the US until 2010… late 2010. The Netflix Instant Watch might be kinda cool… clever how they tucked that into Gold Members only… I would presume these movies are being streamed by Netflix, not Microsoft… I wonder why you’d need Live Gold?

Microsoft’s showing wasn’t bad at all… it was good. But for me… as a *gasp* gamer… the Sony showing was better. Just my opinion guys.

BTW, Dave was largely right in his criticisms. BTW, did you guys all hear Dave and Doc praise the R2 footage? A lot of folks watching the streams of the conference seemed to think it looked bad…

    • gr8rdad says:

Am I the only one who noticed the minute long trek up the flights of stairs in R2? The monster reveal was f’ing awesome. Then it got meh for me. He ran into a building, looked around on que, turned back, went up what seemed like 100 identical looking metal staircases (with 100’s of duplicate windows), looked out a window on que. Got picked up and tossed to another building and gets up as if the 10 story fall was like falling of a trike. Etc. Though the throw through the multiple windows was damn cool. Ultimatley though, what impact did the gameplay have? The scene just seemed like a script you trigger when you walk to the next trigger point.

I typically dislike these game play moments. The really, super scripted ones that defy logic. Like: why would you run across a tower spanning high rises? Why would you consider crossing said tower when a 300 ft monster has its slimy, massively muscilar grip wrapped around it like a cream filled horn?

The game looks awesome, it does, and I want it and I want it now. But I think if that’s the best “demo” they could show us, I could be dissapointed come game in hand.

    • Lono says:

@Rothbart: The movies will be streamed by MS, that’s why they merged this, Netflix needs MS tech and MS needs Netflix’s content.

    • Prophet says:

Firstly I was just making a non- serious jab at Dave…even Doc mentions in the vid about his lack of excitement.

@Lono Not sure why NetFlix needs Microsoft, they have their own streaming tech for PC running already…and you can buy right now a Netflix set-top box to do the same thing…

    • Bumblebear says:

I hope MAG will be like a huge CSS.
Sqaud based, where your on Very tactical maps, with an objective for each team.
Im quite interested in it, i hope it works, but with such huge teams, i can see too many idiots being…idiots…in your team, kinda screwing things up.
If it is like CSS, yeah its annoying if you die early, but if your into the game, you shouldn’t give up on the game, might have to wait 2-4mins, but you could still watch, its not suddunly boring.
Not sure if theres much point in trying to state that MS or Sony ‘won’ e3.
Imo, MS suprised us with FFXIII, but Most other stuff was already announced.
