Burnout Paradise Cagney Impressions

July 10th, 2008 · 10 Comments

Burnout Paradise’s latest update patch Cagney has just hit PS3 copies of the game, with the Xbox 360 version planned for release in a few days due to a couple of difficulties with development. “Codename: Cagney” features new online modes, timed challenges, extra vehicles, 1080i support and custom soundtracks along with a heap of extra other stuff.

I’ve sat down with the update for a couple of hours and there’s still things I’ve not gotten a proper look at yet. Read my impressions after the jump!

After playing through Cagney (AKA Burnout Paradise V1.30) I’m convinced that developer Criterion Games are on something. What, in the name of all that’s holy, is making them think “yeah we should release this for free,” especially since they’re under the heavy-handed corporate wing of Electronic Arts? Cagney’s extra features are well worth paying for, but the fact that you’ll pay nothing for them makes the new stuff it delivers, twice as awesome.

Unfortunately, you don’t get to try it out until you go through a nice long download and install weighing in at around 25 minutes and 385MB, Once that’s done though, you’ll be in for an immediate shock, as Paradise has had a bit of a makeover.

Some screenshots and more await on page two!

      Sounds great. I’ve not been sure whether to buy this game or not; but after seeing this it’s almost certainly a yes =]

      “1080i is supported (but why anybody would favour this over 720p, I don’t know) and custom soundtracks have been added.”

      Please don’t make pointless statements like this, some people have older CRT HDTVs that don’t support 720p and would like to play the game in actually HD res on the PS3 without it going back to 420p.

      OH NO YOU DIDN’T!

      I was owning you on that stunt run until that miraculous comeback.

      Anyways, it was a joy cruising through Paradise City with you, and I’m looking forward to do it again sometime.

      And I’m using Boston’s Boston for my custom soundtrack.

      Good read, but you dint mention the improved SD rendering which is much better than before and make the game look even better on older tvs.

      Yes, It’s a very nice update and I cannot wait until it’s released for Xbox 360.

      Oh and also, EA is not nasty. It was their decision to release it for free in the first place!

      Am I the only one who dislikes the new Burnout menu screen? Am I the only one who thinks it’s actually just a clone of every other EA racing game menu?

      @Drattigan
      I dont play the other EA racers but itlooks very similar to the gt5 prologue menu screen which make me think it made using some feature in the ps3 dev kit.
