Rock Band 2 Songs Revealed… here’s what we know, so far.

Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock was a great game. I played the hell out of it and still pick up my plastic ax every now and then (thanks to some free DLC).

When I read the first previews for the next iteration, Guitar Hero: World Tour, I couldn’t imagine what Harmonix (developers of Rock Band) could do to outshine Activision. Along with a new set list, Guitar Hero: World Tour will feature user-generated content (minus the vocals), new peripherals (doing its best Rock Band impersonation), cameos from some of the biggest names in rock, customizable instruments and characters, and online play for an entire band. Before you ask, the guitars from Guitar Hero III will be compatible with Guitar Hero: World Tour.

I was ready to devote another $60 to the Guitar Hero franchise.

That all changed last Friday.

I turned on my computer to find rumors that, not only would Rock Band 2 have lots of songs (120 shipped on the disc), but that the game would feature music from rock legends, AC/DC. I struggled to contain my excitement as “Thunderstruck” continuously ran through my head, while I put on my Angus school boy outfit and ran through the neighborhood screaming in joy.

It seemed, for a moment, that Harmonix had loosened the death grip that the Guitar Hero franchise has had on my soul since I first picked up a plastic ax.

Since the official announcement of Rock Band 2 on Monday, fans of the franchise have been treated to a few leaked lists of songs possibly appearing in the sequel to the popular music game.

The first round of songs came from a screenshot broadcasted on Tuesday’s episode of X-Play. The listed included master recordings of System of a Down’s “Chop Suey,” “Everlong” by the Foo Fighters and “Ace of Spades” by Motorhead. It should be noted that “Everlong” has been confirmed for Guitar Hero: World Tour and “Ace of Spades” appeared in the original Guitar Hero, as a cover.

Little did I know that this was only the beginning.

Early yesterday, Destructoid reported, based on information from the ScoreHero forums, that a second list of songs had leaked onto the Internet. Harmonix has not confirmed or denied the existence of these songs in Rock Band 2, so this information is merely speculation.

The first song on the list was Linkin Park’s “One Step Closer.” It’s a solid song. I actually bought “Hybrid Theory” (the name of the CD) when it was released back in 2000. However, it’s not a song that would force me to buy Rock Band 2.

Then I saw the next song. After settling back into my chair, I stared at my computer to make sure that I hadn’t misread the title. Nope, I read it correctly. Megadeth’s “Peace Sells” is one of the tracks rumored to be in Rock Band 2.

There is more on the second page.

Personally I’d really like to see some older Alkaline Trio (just for the drums!), some BadMotorfinger-era Soundgarden (Rusty Cage!), and any Pearl Jam from Ten or Vs.

Some indie stuff for DLC or Bonus tracks would be really appreciated as well – heavy stuff like Consumed, Blood for Blood, etc…

But harmonix is on the right track. Thx for the update.

Really? You’re still playing Guitar Hero III over Rock Band? Really?

I would have figured Lono would have converted you to the awesomeness that is Rock Band by now. Hell, I haven’t even touched Guitar Hero III ever since purchasing Rock Band. Glad to see you’re finally coming around, albeit it a little late. :-P

I really want to see Coma by GnR in either Rock Band or GH. The lyrics are my my favorite in any song, especially the last 3 minutes. It probably has the most lyrics of any song ever. Axl Rose has probably 8 solid minutes of great lyrics with barely enough time to breathe. The guitar part is also great, along with the drums. It would be a great “epic” song that RB and GH usually put in towards the end of the set list.

Rock band 2 looks better and better each day. the only song that would make it a real must buy for me is if they add it in:

Journey-Don’t Stop Believin’. its the ultimate party song to play.

i would say play the dream theater version of Panic Attack, simply because technically, they are the best group around, IMO.

    • Tweepe says:

They picked “Black Hole Sun” for the first Rockband…

    • Havok Saunders says:

      @ Tweepe

I can’t believe I forgot that. Thanks for the correction.

    • Havok Saunders says:

      @ Tweepe

I can’t believe I forgot that. Thanks for the reminder.

    • Bill says:

      SRV – Riviera Paradise..

Everybody needs a break once in a while.

    • White Wedding is great, but Rebel Yell would be ultimate! Another great song for Rock Band 2 would be Bad Case of Lovin’ You by Robert Palmer. That song has a great guitar part, vocals, and a cool drum skip and bass kick that would make an incredible track for the game.

    • Havok Saunders says:

      @ Th3Guns1ing3r

“Rebel Yell” has been confirmed for Guitar Hero: World Tour. However, since a good number of songs seem to show up in both franchises, perhaps you will get your wish.

This is going to be a very balanced battle.

Even though atm I’d put my money on GH4 due to the best Rock & Metal bands, the amount of Rock Band’s leaked info is pathetic compared to GH so in the end, it’ll probably all come down to personal preference.

    • The Cod says:

Chilis, Motorhead, Journey, RATM, The Who, Foo Fighters, Linkin Park AND FINGER ELEVEN?

      Holy cr*p.

This is the greatest song list I have seen on a game in this genre of gaming…

      Unbelievable.

It’s like they are in my head.

Balaamsafe said he didn’t know who Finger Eleven were…

Where’s Paralyzer? Or One Thing? Or anything from Them vs You vs Me or Tip?

I’m so excited. You better not be screwing me, Havoc!

    • Warzone says:

Crazy Train, Master of Puppets, Jumpin’ Jack Flash, Smoke on the Water (non-cover), Iron Man (the cover in GH1 was completely borked), anything SRV, anything Santana, anything Clapton, anything ZZ Top, anything Hendrix, anything Cranberries…

    • Lono says:

how bout the master track of Howl at the Moon?

    • Havok Saunders says:

      @ Lono

I might get flamed for this, but I would rather have “Shot in the Dark.”

    • lio says:

they should just change the whole distribution way… make the engine available for free (or at least cheap) and let people buy songs for teh game online… that way you could simply get the songs you like and skip those that you don’t care about…

    • DrDtroit says:

I agree with JJF, Master of Puppets, and Shot in the Dark.

Also, while thier Journey choice is far from my favorite, HECK YES MORE ALICE IN CHAINS!

    • Bono Hit My Car says:

      @Lono

Pretty sure that’s Bark at the Moon yea?

    • Don’t Stop Believin’ FTW! RB2 vs. GHWT….the fight gets bloodier each day. I will likely buy GHWT full set IF it is compatible with RB2 disc.

    • bueatifulraven says:

I would pick GH if it was better than three. In my opinion GHIII was really bad. The notes were not funny for me at all. So I would rent GH and maybe buy RB.

    • DrPepper says:

Haha, I had the same feeling you did for Peace sells when they released Screaming for Vengeance all of a sudden, More Judas priest would be a very large positive, And actual good Maiden song’s like “The evil that men do” and masters only.
oOooo, Any way you want it would be awesome, Seperate ways would also be great. I agree with having papercut, the only Linkin Park song I like, That break at the beginning would be insanely fun to play. I wear my sunglasses at night would be perfect as well, they need more 80s songs, Most of the people in the first Rock Band are either bands I’ve never heard of or stupid bands I hate.

    • I would kill to see some Slipknot in RB2, or even as DLC for the current RB, maybe the new album when it’s released. The drums, guitar, and bass would all be extremely challenging, (and likely fun) to play. (example of challenging, the Before I Forget Bridge on Expert on GHIII)

And Corey Taylor is an awesome singer, so it would actually be a mix of pitched singing with growling the words, making it more entertaining than singing D.O.A. (which you basically just growl along with)

    • Schrockboy says:

We need some Canadian Rock like

      River Below-Billy Talent
      or
      Fallen Leaves-Billy Talent
      Paralyzer- Finger Eleven
      Take My Hand- Simple PLan
      and others like
you give love a bad name- bon jovi
      or
      its my life-bon jovi
Animal I have Become – three days grace
      or pain
Dance Dance – fall out boy
Paradise city – guns n roses
      Pork and BEans – Weezer

    • Schrockboy says:

      oh and holiday by greenday

    • mr flamethro says:

Aqualung’s a good choice. Man, Renegade would be wild though.

But they HAVE to do Hocus Pocus by Focus.

Great song on all parts, and the vox would be killer.

    • mr flamethro says:

      @ Schrockboy

You want Canadian rock, but not Rush?

      Shame on you.

    • Xev67 says:

Anything Cranberries and since it won’t happen i’d settle for just about anything GN’R or Alice in Chains
