Hail me, for I am a soothsayer. Alright, so I can’t predict the future. However, it appears that a topic discussed in one of my recent articles might be coming to fruition. What news do I have to report?
Find out after the jump.
Get your whips ready and prepare for another journey into the Castlevania universe. Konami’s vampire-slaying franchise is rumored to be coming to the Wii.
CVG (computerandvideogames.com) has reported that Preview, the comic book magazine, was the first to spill the beans on the existence of a Castlevania game for the Wii. The information is also viewable in a listing for the Castlevania: Curse of Darkness comic available at Badger Comics (scroll down to the bottom of the page to find “Key Selling Points”).
The rumored Wii title doesn’t have a name as of yet, but it, along with Order of Ecclesia for the DS, are reportedly shipping later this year. Treat this as rumor until official confirmation comes from Konami.
Koji Igarashi, the series’ producer, recently shared his qualms about bringing Castlevania to the Wii in an interview with the MTV Multiplayer blog. He said that using the Wiimote as a whip might force players to exert too much energy. Either his concerns were quelled rather quickly or he was trying to keep the title under wraps. I assume, since the game is rumored to ship in the fall, that it was more of the latter.
If the rumors are true, I hope that this game isn’t simply an attempt to capitalize on the success of the Wii. Castlevania is one of my favorite franchises of all time and I think that a proper sequel would sell well on Nintendo’s current-generation console. The real question becomes whether the game will be a traditional 2-D sidescroller or a 3-D action-adventure game. I must admit that I am always concerned when classic 2-D franchises are rendered in 3-D, but perhaps Konami can work some magic on the Wii. Just a side note, Castlevania for the Nintendo 64 was done in 3-D. It has an aggregate score of 78 (out of 100) on Metacritic.
I have long lamented the current third-party lineup for the Wii, but this rumor, combined with the recent announcements of Spyborgs, MadWorld and Stars Wars: The Clone Wars, has me excited about the future.
