“I won.”
Grand Theft Auto 4 is finally in my rear view mirror. After what seems like a hundred hours of gameplay, I finally finished . What a ride.
I do not share Lono’s sentiment that the last few missions were a chore. They were, in my opinion, the most compelling gaming experience I’ve ever had. I will avoid spoiling the story for those of you, like me, who don’t get to “game like Lono” and haven’t had the privilege of completing this incredible odyssey.
Spoiler-free GTA4 philosophy after the jump.
I heard speculation from somewhere that GTA was going to be a movie one day. Somehow I doubt we’d get anything close to the story we got from GTA4 the game.
I explained the whole story to Wifey last night, and I surprised even myself with the passion with which I recalled the tale of an immigrant with a troubled past who comes to America looking for a new life. I told her about Niko’s background, the people he meets, the decisions he is forced to make, the wild shootouts, the deception, and the development of the character Niko Belic. As I told the story I realized that while the game culminates in one of only 2 endings (despite the bottomless well of choices), it was the journey that made GTA4 the iconic title that it was for me.
As dumb as it sounds, I am going to miss Brucie, Roman, Packie, and Paul. I am going to miss those awkward dates with Kate when I kept accidentally getting into gun battles that scared her off. hahahahahahhaahaha…ha….hahaha. Oh Kate.
Sorry where was I?
I guess part of what I am saying is that I wouldn’t be interested in a GTA4 movie. Sure there’s plenty of action and drama, but without being able to help dictate the direction of the events, I’m afraid we’d be left with a very empty non-immersive experience that wouldn’t stack up to what the game delivered. This isn’t to say that all movies are empty experiences, but after being there, so-to-speak, I don’t care how many incredible chase scenes and stunts you pack into it, GTA4 wouldn’t be the same without… me.
I was the one who let Ivan live. I was the one that robbed the bank. I was there. Not Matt Damon.
In my personal opinion Rockstar, in creating this crown jewel, may have stumbled into a whole new genre of entertainment…(continue reading)

I’m at 15%… boycott intact.
Until Rockstar patches GTA IV for the PS3 so it doesn’t freeze, they can lick my sweaty… oh, I guess this is a PG-13 site… I probably shouldn’t say ballsack.

That was a truly beautiful article and I have to agree that although all those bloody pigeons arnt dead, I wouldnt like to change the emotional relationship that I built up with Niko that didnt build up with all the other GTA’s main characters, I would only go back on multiplayer and maybe in 6 months to get 100% completion.
Great article Doc.

@Rothbart You haven’t sweated since the DDR foot fracture of ‘o7. stop lying
I thought it was just the multiplayer that froze up. My 360 version froze probably about 3 times for disc errors.
That’ll show them Sean. Don’t play the game you already bought!
GO BOYCOTT!
lol

@Doc - it happens in single OR multiplayer. And for the boycott, it’s not only “not playing”, it includes badmouthing Rockstar to all 6 of our listeners on the podcast. The game’s been out almost a month and a half… my faith that they’re going to fix the problem is dwindling.

@ Doc,
Would you ever play through it again to get the alternate ending?
I dont think I would…
What ending did you get?

I haven’t beaten the game yet… but I think my most memorable thing so far (and funniest) was being arrested for drunk driving… Well it was more likely due to the fact that I ran over a biker while driving, crashed my car, which started on fire, and tried to stumble myself away from the police. Suffice to say that you can’t stumble very fast, especially when you’re face down on the ground. So I got arrested, had my weapons stolen from me.
I proceeded to get some back and then went on a rampage killing random people to get my money back. That sure was a blast

this morning i woke up, and thought
“when i get my ps3 back (2oth), i think i will just buy mgs4 and bad company, i don’t see why i need GTA4, everyone is saying it’s getting old and boring”
this article just made me realise that i don’t want to miss this piece of amazing on a disk.

I played both of the last missions just to get both endings…. Meh….

Lono, are there any significant changes in the different ending? Just say yes or no so as to not ruin anything but I just want to know if theres any point in going for it.

lol thats kinda weird Doc. Sure the story was cool but just playing through the game once? Seems like a waste of money if you only play it once.
13 Doc // Jun 11, 2008 at 4:23 pm
@silver
A waste of money? Dude, I got more gameplay out of GTA4 than I have on any other single player experiuence ever. 2nd place would go to Mass Effect.
14 Lono // Jun 11, 2008 at 4:42 pm
Yes there are significant changes in the endings.

You can still hang out with Packie and Brucie and Jacob. In fact, you must if you wanna get that 100%.
I got the 100% achievement last week. Will be playing it over again in a few months to get the under 30 hours achievement and see the other ending.

I thought that it was a brilliant game, good article Doc. It really feels like the best article that I have read on it yet on any site! I will have to try and get into a multiplayer with you sometime. It really makes for good laughs!
