What to play on your PSP: Dungeon Siege: Throne of Agony

As I whined yesterday about the dearth of PSP games coming out in the next six months, I pondered one question. What the heck am I going to play on my PSP to pass the time? I decided to get out the trusty metacritic guide and take a stroll down PSP memory lane. Turns out, I may have missed a few gems along the way. Here’s my review of one of them:

Dungeon Siege: Throne of Agony. It’s the best PSP game, you’ve never played. Find out why, after the jump!

First off, lets just get the “Diablo clone” comparisons out of the way, right away. I never played Diablo, although, from what I hear, it’s pretty kick ass. I’ve never played it, so those preconceived notions went right out the window.

Why does it get compared to the Diablo games? Well, Dungeon Siege is basically a hack and slash action RPG, where you go into “dungeons” and collect loot to make your avatar stronger, so he or she can go into more dangerous dungeons to get better loot… and so on and so forth.

Story? Well, there’s something about some dude that has awoken and his minions are plaguing the lands, yadda, yadda, yadda… Who cares, right? I want to kill me some monsters and get the loot!

Starting off, you’ll get to pick from three classes, which are basically, the warrior, the mage and the archer. I chose a warrior. This warrior happened to be a half-giant, so that was pretty sweet. Throughout the game you’ll get quests that will take you to different parts of a fairly large land mass. Later on in the game you’ll acquire the ability to get on a boat that will take you to different islands that will have a ton of dungeons to ransack, for your leveling pleasure.

The action is fun and you’ll earn a ton of powerful spells, passive buffs, active buffs and other attacks that will compliment your main attack. You can also switch between ranged and melee combat with the push of the D-pad, which is nice, especially if you excel in both and want to take advantage of that during intense dungeon foraging.

The combat is as simple as pushing the X button, but your additional attacks make up for how basic the main attacks are. You’ll also get a follower that will accompany you throughout the game and along the way, you’ll meet other companions that wish to travel with you, however, you can only have one companion at a time, which I liked as they’re never as powerful as you and you kind of have to babysit them so they don’t get killed too often… One great thing was how much of a variety of different baddies you’ll cleave to death during your 15 plus hours of hacking and slashing. It never got old for me. Not once. A definite plus.

The graphics are also crisp, but not too flashy. When you change your avatar’s gear, you will see it in the game. There’s a ton of different armor combinations, or weapons combinations. You can go sword and shield, Staff and no shield, wield Two-handed axes and swords, crossbows, bows and even dual wield weapons, which turns you into a killing machine.

It’s a lengthy adventure too, which is a nice change of pace for most PSP games on the market. I really think I got my money’s worth. Through out all of my GTA playing, the only game that took me away from GTA IV was Dungeon Siege: Throne of Agony. Check it out. I highly recommend it for any PSP owner looking for a light hack and slash, action RPG.

Buy it.

Thanks for the review I will check it out. Is it better than Untold Legends II? I got really bored with that one.
