Far Cry 2 is my Metal Gear, Halo and Call of Duty combined. Today Lono threw me a link to about 20 minutes of gameplay footage, and now I know why R6V2 was so dull. They must have moved the creative team to the Far Cry 2 project. Awesome video, and juicy details after the jump!
Stunning environments, even by Far Cry’s high standards, are only the half of it. Destructible vegetation that’s accurate to within one pixel. As the speaker says in this video, that means that where you hit the branch with a bullet, that’s where it breaks. But if we were just talking about a game where you shoot plants, it’s not likely I’d be very excited.
Horticulture aside, one of the things that makes this Far Cry a little different is that this time, the game world is 100% open. You can go anywhere. Previous iterations FELT open, but eventually you’d hit a cliff or ledge that kept you JUST out of the places they didn’t want you to go.
Now, to quote Ubi’s Louie Pierre Pharand…
“You can do whatever the f*** you want.”
Enough of me describing what you’re about to see.
Enjoy the video. I know I did.

If this is the video I am thinking of, this has been out for months.
The Ubisoft devs showed 1/2 of gameplay footage or thereabouts at Play.com Live, and detailed and outlined every aspect of the game.
I was there to see this marvel of video gaming, along with a few other lucky SG members.
This looks set to be the most realistic game created to date, and from what was shown by the devs, it will be in the driving seat for GOTY.
And its multi-platform!
There’s no downside.
IT. LOOKS. FANTASTIC.
But the gameplay footage is very old news… lol

Are people in UBI blind? Can’t they see, that guns in this UBER realistic way work same way they did in the first game= badly? Even starving kids in Africa played CoD4 and KNOW, that you dont need to cock you gun every time you change magazine!! It is pissing me off, just a small detail YET ruining the realism for me. Was it to difficult to STOP reloading animation after magazine is inside the combat ready rifle? Its 2008 and developers still make such a small stupid mistakes! Grrrr….

Meh
This game may end up being different but I can’t help but think that despite the new developers, the game will share the Crytek style of technically brilliant, yet souless games. After going through Far Cry and Crysis any game from that lineage needs to offer me more than a pretty world with good physics and I don’t see that here.
Things like being able to alter time and fixing cars seem a little gimmicky and as cool as the fire is, I expect the novelty to quickly wear off.
Don’t really see why the earlier games having limits to the world was a problem. I never felt the urge to walk off in one direction as far as I could. Though I also never felt the urge to complete Far Cry so maybe there’s something wrong with me.
The vast size of the world in general doesn’t really impress me. It’s not modelling a full city, everything is either water, sand, rock or vegetation.
The guy giving the speech drove me crazy as well, he was a turtleneck away from being the French Steve Jobs

I really hope that the final frame rate is higher than all the videos are showcasing. I don’t care how good the game looks if it runs like a slideshow.
