I don’t often regret things. Whenever I make a purchase, it is usually based on solid reasoning and a thorough understanding of the product. This is especially true of videogames. I have become quite judicious about my software purchases. For instance, I once bought “ClayFighter 63 1/3″ for the Nintendo 64. Yea, I know. I promise it won’t happen again.
The point is, I usually make sound decisions. At least I think so…
Well, right about now, I am starting to think I backed the wrong pony (sorry for the cliché, but I’m from Kentucky).
Find out the details of my conundrum after the jump.
The popular California-based “so-cal” punk band, The Offspring, is providing Rock Band owners with a lot to shout about. This past week, the band’s new single, “Hammerhead,” made its way to XBL as downloadable content for the game. I assume that the track will be part of the North American PSN update later today.
I have never been a huge fan of The Offspring, but I do enjoy many of the group’s singles. “Hammerhead” is certainly one of those songs.
Now, word comes straight from the band’s official site that an additional six songs from the punk rockers will be coming to Rock Band. The full list, full of popular singles, is comprised of “Come Out And Play [Keep ‘Em Separated],” “Self Esteem,” “Gone Away,” “All I Want,” “Pretty Fly (For A White Guy),” and “The Kids Aren‘t Alright.”
The web site states that the songs will be made available soon. I assume that “soon” means next week.
I don’t know how you feel about those songs, but I, as a Guitar Hero III owner, am on the verge of releasing a firestorm of curse words not heard before by human ears. I love all of those songs. In fact, if I had Rock Band, Harmonix couldn’t take my money fast enough. Throw in the recent Disturbed track pack (yes, I like them), and the obscenities get louder.
Don’t get me wrong. I love Guitar Hero III. It is a great game that I do not regret purchasing. I actually played the game for a couple hours last night after purchasing the Isle of Wight track pack (”Shoot the Runner” is a badass song). However, in hindsight, I think that Rock Band might have been the way to go.
Harmonix has created a near prefect DLC strategy for Rock Band. Not just because of the sheer amount of content (over 200 songs), but also because you can purchase single songs. This contrasts greatly with Guitar Hero III DLC, which is released primarily in three-song track packs.
I purchased Guitar Hero III because I believed that it had the better initial set list. However, Rock Band, with its beefy DLC offerings, has clearly become the king of music games.
I realize that Rock Band is currently available for purchase at most retailers, but I think I will wait to see what the sequel has to offer. With my limited funds, purchasing additional plastic peripherals seems like an unwise move at this juncture. Hopefully, the DLC will carryover to the next game. It seems like a possibility. After all, Harmonix isn’t Activision. Oh yeah, I went there.

Yea, you backed the wrong horse. I hedged my bets and got both (but just game and mic for RB, no coordination for drums)… I still kinda regret paying for GH3, I don’t play it nearly as much as I play RB. And have since decided (thanks to the feeling of over saturation) that I won’t be buying any more GH games. Activision is really beating the GH pony
But EA likes to beat it’s dead horses too. As much as I’d hope the next RB will be able to play download packs, I have to remember that EA also makes Madden and NCAA football games… and never once has thought of making the game every 5 yrs and releasing a yearly roster update Can you copy your teams over from Madden 07 to 08?

Yea, but at least EA seems to be attempting to improve their “evil” image. Activision seems to be trying to fill that void.

Dude, just buy the 60 rock band game. I’m sure you can find it for even less used…
I played the Hammerhead song yesterday… Tons of fun.

Yea, but then I have to buy a guitar as well (I have a PS3, so my GH guitar isn’t compatible with Rock Band).

Also after getting Rock Band, the least of your worries is the price of a new guitar, DLC is going to be the one that eats your money like sugar coated candy.
