SciFi to take TV show games to the next level

So you love, love, love Battlestar Galactica. What do you do when the show ends, the credits roll and that’s it for the week? After you’ve consumed all the content, that’s it, you’re left waiting for the next episode. Well, SciFi is looking to change that sometime in 2010. Since I’m a fan of many SciFi shows, and a fan of MMOs… Looks like you may not see much of me in a couple years.

All the information we have is after the jump.

Game developer Trion World Network is teaming up with the SciFi channel to create an MMO world that will share a world and storyline with an upcoming SciFi series. Sure, you hear this all the time, but that’s usually just a slapped-together game that has the show’s sticker on it. This endeavor seems to be taking it to the next level.

Instead of two separate mediums, the game is planned to not only share the same fictional world with the show, but to have the players actually influence the story. Scheduled pvp (player versus player) events could change the way a certain plot line of an episode plays out, and the show’s creators would have instant access to their viewers’ opinions on their story and direction.

This is certainly going to take some work for both parties involved, and considering the show may be an unknown franchise, it could easily crash and burn. I’m hesitantly optimistic, considering that most of SciFi’s newest shows like Stargate Atlantis and Eureka have been pretty good and caters to the fans of the channel. I’ll definitely be following the news that comes out about this project, and hopefully they’ll be able to make something unique.

Sounds like an awesome concept, but could they pull it off well?

This really does sound like a great concept but I really wonder about the implementation. Changing the game world quickly probably wouldn’t be too hard. Asheron’s Call used to change the world monthly so perhaps smaller changes could be done at a quicker pace. What would really make me wonder is how they heck they are going to shoot the show at such a fast pace.

They could shoot multiple storylines but that might end up more choose-your-adventure like but perhaps that’s what this is. Otherwise, I certainly can’t see them shooting a show within a week’s time for the next showing.

Either way, it’s an interesting idea. We’ll see how it ends up rolling out. Even if it sucks maybe someone else will come up with a better way to do this and we’ll see more shows like this.

I think this is an intriguing idea but with a few questions. Could player characters become show characters? What if someone is disruptive during an event that is part of the show’s story?
