Rockstar Patches Grand Theft Freeze IV (Again…)

June 23rd, 2008 at 6:23 pm · 7 Comments

Two months after Grand Theft Auto IV was released, I’m given another opportunity to see if they’ve finally “gotten it right” with respect to us 60GB PS3 owners who still experience random freezing in the game that can only be resolved by getting off our lazy butts and power cycling our machines. This new patch addresses a fair number of crash-related issues, but none of them come right out and say “Fixed crash that seems to be unrelated to anything specific at all.”

Details for what crashes they’ve addressed after the jump…

Rockstar apparently fixed hangs related to:

  • Scripted vehicles causing the game to unexpectedly crash (which should be noted as very different from when you actually do expect the game to crash, which for me is pretty much randomly anytime.)
  • Moving from a Race or GTA Race lobby into gameplay
  • When switching teams during the countdown in the lobby

This is the 2nd patch Rockstar has released in as many months. To date, I’ve not heard any official acknowledgment from them of a problem specific to the 60GB PS3 and I have to say, my faith in this taking care of the issue is dwindling.

I don’t care as much as I used to, now that I’ve got MGS4 in my possession. I’m in no real rush to race back to Liberty City while Liquid Snake is still on the loose, unleashing the fury of his Guns of the Patriots. For a moment there I wondered what it’d be like having Snake sneaking up on Niko. Would I kill him outright or just knock him out with a tranquilizer? The sad fact of the matter is Niko would like freeze on his own, allowing snake to do howling cartwheels as he passed by unnoticed… Octocamo flashing like a strobe light.

Oh, and Rockstar? If my GTA IV still manages to keep crashing? I’m probably going to mail you my review in the form of a turd. A homemade one at that, not a fake rubber turd or one I found in the park… a freshly “brewed?” 3D representation of how your game sits in my rear (or bowels as it seems.) [Mental note... check to see if that's even legal...]

Hmm, you don’t have to get up to turn off your 360.

      *Praises guide button*

But then again, if you were playing on a 360, you wouldn’t be freezing at all :D

Thank you Rockstar Games for being a pussy about not porting to a great console.

We really owe ya. Wait no it’s the other way around.

      @ paulmess7

You don’t have to get up to turn off your PS3 either.

      *Praises PS Button* lol…

MGS4 is too much of a distraction to return to the dull game that is GTA IV…

This doesn’t affect me much, due to me being the prowd non-owner of a copy of GTA IV… I did not like it. And any patch will not change my opinion of this game…

So buy your ps3 now, fantastic graphics, blue ray player and regular crashes.

I’m playing GTA online at the mo, only because 3 of my friends are on holidays and the other 2 that have PS3s only have GTA IV and R:FOM.

We pretty much just do free mode, we tried that tugboat thing. Lono is right nothing beats going 5 MPH on a rusty tanker.

      :P

    • @paulmess7: When a game freezes EITHER console, you have to get up off your ass to turn it off. I’ve had it happen on my 360 before (obviously not with GTA IV, since I own that on the PS3).
