The Ghostbusters game is on my short list of must-buy titles for this holiday season. Not only is the game based on one of my favorite film franchises, but it actually looks really good.
The game will feature many of the familiar voices from the movies (most notably the actual ‘Busters). Hell, the developers even the managed to get that huge diva Stay Puft to make an appearance in the game.
However, as always seems to happen, someone wants to rain on my parade.
I am sad to report, Sarcastic Gamers, that Rick Moranis will not be reprising his role as lawyer Louis Tully in the upcoming Ghostbusters game. I understand (and agree) that having the likes of Bill Murray and Ernie Hudson (my personal favorite) is far more important, but Moranis could have been a great source of comic relief.
The reason for Moranis’ absence is apparently monetary. No, we don’t have another Michael Ironside situation on our hands. In fact, it’s the exact opposite. Moranis has too much money.
In a recent post on Kotaku, Sierra’s Ben Borth was quoted as saying:
“He made so much money off of Honey I Shrunk the Kids that he retired. He just doesn’t want to work anymore.”
Call me crazy, but I am not buying it.
First, Moranis starred in 1994’s “Little Giants.” That was five years after “Honey I Shrunk the Kids” was released.
So, Moranis made enough money to retire in 1989, but decided to continue acting? I guess Moranis really liked the “Little Giants” script.
I might be more inclined to believe Borth had he said Moranis made enough money during his entire career. After all, Moranis has worked since “Little Giants.” Most recently, he voiced Rutt in Disney’s two Brother Bear films. However, “Honey I Shrunk the Kids” on its own? I remain skeptical.
Also, to survive on the money made from “Honey I Shrunk the Kids,” Moranis would have to be quite fiscally conservative (unlike most of Hollywood). I can just see it know, Moranis sitting down on his milk-crate sofa to enjoy his nightly meal of Ramen. I bet he scoffs at the thought of health insurance and car insurance.
All jokes and skepticism aside, I guess it is plausible that Moranis has enough money to live comfortably for the rest of his life. Perhaps he is a tremendous investor. Maybe he spent wisely and didn’t waste his money on gold cars and multiple beach houses on both sides of the country.
Whatever his monetary situation, I know that he won’t be a part of the upcoming game. That makes me a sad panda. Want to make it up to me Sierra? Make sure the developers include the courtroom fight from the second film. Yea, that would help ease my pain.

dont forget, honey I Shrunk the Kids was a huge phenomenon… Spin off shows, Cartoons, lunch boxes, and Disney STILL dedicated a section of MGM Studios to Honey i shrunk the kids which is still very much a must see attraction of the park…
R.M. was the STAR of the movie… he made that franchise, and is still getting paid on residuals… Do you remmber any other big named people that stand out? not me
I also feel like, whats the big deal in lending your voice to a game… I think it would be GREAT to hear his voice considering a love me some rick moranis…. But he’s got bank… I think sarcastic gamer should try and get a hold of him for a little pod-casty cast!!!
You make an excellent point andyg. He was also in the 1992 sequel, “Honey, I Blew up the Kid.”
It would definitely be great to hear Lono discuss videogames and films with Moranis. Hell, I even go for them discussing the best type of picnic basket. My only request would be that Moranis would have to reference giant lego pieces and large insects at least twice.
I am not seeing your argument. So you don’t think he has the money to retire without putting out a single figure?
I spent five minutes on the internet and found that “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids” made $222 million worldwide ($139 mil domestic), and that was in 1989.
As horrible as it was “Honey, I Blew Up the Kid” sold $100 million, and that was in 1992.
“The Flintstones” totaled in around $450 million, and that was in 1994.
Assuming that he invested just 15% of his earnings with inflation he would definitely have more then enough to retire. And he would probably retire more comfortably then the writer of this article (milk-crate sofa? Give me a break)
This article is horribly written and makes it look like you are reaching as hard as you can to fill the page. Poor, Poor, journalism, blogging, or whatever you consider it to be. Have more respect for your readers.
@ CaptHanky
I have the utmost respect for the readers of this site. Please don’t question that.
Also, read the second to last paragraph. The one that starts with “All JOKES and skepticism aside…” I make it pretty clear that I think he could live comfortably off the earnings from his entire career.
I thought this was old news?
it was old news dR00gR
He probably makes all that money off syndication and stuff, I mean Disney loves to milk their franchise’s and the cast involved get royalty cuts.
I think he might make more then enough to get by, but it seems weird he does not want to be affiliated with this project, all he has to do is read lines, have his face modeled, and make money.
IIRC, Rick Moranis lost his wife in the mid-90s and was so devastated by it that he pretty much gave up his acting career. He occasionally works on a few projects behind-the-scenes, but deliberately avoids being in front of the camera (or in this case, microphone) anymore.
He was also in the movie Bully with Tom Arnold in like 98. He must be out of his to not want to be involved with this game.
@ Havok Saunders
Okay, fair enough, you bash him for five or more paragraphs then take it all back with 2 or 3 sarcastic sentences (hence sarcasticgamer.com). That is a lot like me insulting your intelligence and putting a “:-)” at the end of the sentence. A happy face does not make your sentence any less insulting.
However, if your going to write an argument as to why Rick Moranis should be broke at least take a few minutes after you right your thesis to look up some supporting evidence and plan for someone that might say “your wrong because…”.
This is a great website, I get on here everyday. This article is not what people get on here to read. It is like listening to a drunk guy babble about why someone is stupid, unless your also drunk it is not interesting.
That being said, I like the other stuff you have written. Never thought I would stick up for Rick Moranis like this, hilarious.
