Man, Konami must really love us Brits. Not just content with giving us extra things in our special edition of Metal Gear Solid 4 (okay, one extra thing, but it was an Old Snake action figure so I’m not complaining) compared to what our Stateside cousins received, they’re dishing out even more limited edition MGS goodies! What’s more, this one is practical!
More exclamations after the jump!
UK games retail chain Gamestation have listed something very special on their online store. The Metal Gear Solid 4 stainless steel watch. Priced at £100 (~$200), only 500 of them are being produced and what’s more, they’re only being sold in the UK, and they’re only being sold by Gamestation. The watch itself is stamped with the MGS4 logo on the face, and comes in a special gift box containing a certificate of approval and a unique identity number.
Unfortunately, for those of you thinking “it’s okay, I’ll just get it imported”, Gamestation will deliver to the UK only, so unless a very generous MGS fanboy puts theirs up on eBay, you’re all out of luck.
I’m simply wondering though: why the UK? Is it sales figures? Do more people buy MGS in the UK than anywhere else in the world or something? Not sure how that would add up, if proportion is taken into account; after all, for every Brit in the world there are 5 Americans and around 2 Japanese people. I know not every American or every Japanese person (hell, even every British person) plays video games, but in relative terms you’d expect sales of MGS to be greater in the countries with the largest populations.
Maybe Konami just loves Europe, and the UK in general? Not taking Kojima’s love of London into account, as many years ago in a PlayStation 2 magazine he talked of how cool it’d be to send a Metal Gear stomping through the streets of the capital, the UK has been on the receiving end of some pretty cool features unavailable in other territories, be it the European Extreme difficulty settings in MGS2 and MGS3 (the former game of which I only managed to finish on EE a month or so before MGS4 was released) or the various Demo Theater mode included on the European releases of MGS3, which was thrown in along with extra camo patterns and new levels for the ‘Snake vs. Monkey’ Ape Escape spinoff mode. The European edition of MGS2 even came with a special ‘Making of’ DVD.
It seems that this could easily be the answer. Maybe Konami just loves Europe so much that they give us lots of nice things, not least to make up for the delays we constantly face in comparison to the other territories. I’m still wondering why they handpicked the UK for the limited edition watch, but either way, the only disappointment for me is that I don’t have the £100 with which to buy myself one.

if they are still in stock tonmorrow, when my paycheck comes through, i’m grabbing one
bet one of those suckers would make a small killing on ebay
It would be cool if besides the traditional 12, 3, 6, 9 functions, it had a MGS-style 4. You forgot to mention he kickass box art you guys got. That detailed close up of Snake is great, but yours is better.
I think the reason the UK gets all of that stuff is because those Brits are some hardcore gamers. They fill up fansites more than Americans.
Oh, the envy…
Hey, I think there are some pretty hardcore gamers in the US too. Take for example, the guys that founded this site.
