Fischer acknowledges Wii storage problem

Laurent Fischer is flapping his gums again. Only this time, the managing director of Nintendo Europe isn’t taking shots at consumers.

Fischer, the mouthpiece behind the “geeks and otaku” comment, seems to be taking the concerns of Wii owners seriously. Or, so he says.

Keep scrolling to read his newest comments.

In an article posted on gamesindustry.biz, Fischer says Nintendo is aware that some gamers are finding the Wii’s 512 MB storage space a bit restrictive.

“We definitely detect that they [gamers] are serious and we know there is an issue in this, so it’s something that we’re working on,” he said.

I would like to make an announcement of my own. Laurent Fischer is a genius. I bet his ACT and SAT scores were perfect. Watch out Satoru Iwata. Laurent Fischer is coming for your job.

All sarcasm aside, Nintendo fans have heard this song and dance before. In early May, Iwata, the president of Nintendo, acknowledged that a small percentage of Wii owners were encountering storage issues.

As expected, Nintendo has remained silent about possible solutions since Iwata’s gross underestimation of the problem. However, that hasn’t stopped the constant flow of rumors and speculation propagated by the Internet.

A supposed job listing posted by Nintendo surfaced earlier this month. Apparently, the Japanese gaming giant was looking for individuals that had previously worked with USB devices. Based on this information, many speculated that Nintendo would eventually allow gamers to use external storage devices as an alternative to the Wii’s internal memory. However, Fischer was quick to play party pooper.

“Definitely there’s no plan to issue hardware, an external hard drive, but we know that we have an issue in that area,” he said. “It’s very obvious and we’re perfectly aware of it, but there’s nothing we can say beyond this.”

While Fischer seems to have squashed the idea of a first-party external HD, I hope Nintendo doesn’t ignore all such devices (my Western Digital external hard drive has plenty of space). Otherwise, we might be stuck with SD cards until the launch of Nintendo’s next-generation console (Wii 2).

It appears, with the lack of specific information from Fischer, that Wii owners are once again left in the dark. However, E3 is right around the corner (begins July 15), so perhaps something will be announced then. Or perhaps Nintendo will continue to drag its feet and only acknowledge that there is a problem. I say talk is cheap. Put up or shut up Nintendo.

I’m surprised they didn’t think that the current storage capacity would be surpassed. Heres to hoping E3 brings some good news

This guy is as bad as that guy that just left Sony, Phill Harrison I think it was, the guy who said rumble was “last gen”. This guy just won’t do anything but insult people and acknowledge problems.
