Finally, PSN joins the next generation

Our friends over at Kotaku have unearthed a bit of a gem on YouTube. Eagle eyed forum users will have already seen the thread full of rumors and mocked up images (namely the one you can see up there, but that’s irrelevant). Version 2.40 of the PS3’s system software is rumored to include not only 360-style Achievements but a Xross Media Bar accessible from within a game, probably the most-demanded feature from any PS3 owner on the planet.

Check out the video, after the jump.

Delivering a double whammy of PS3 based excitement, the YouTube video allegedly from within 2K Games itself depicts the Bioshock title screen rippling behind the familiar design of the XMB menu. Whomever is controlling the console scrolled through the Game column on the bar, past some unintelligible logos and words until reaching what is undoubtedly a trophy icon, possibly confirming that the system software on this console is 2.40. This may well confirm that this video is a leak from within 2K Games, as those with their ears against the grapevine will have heard that developers already have their hands on the brand-new firmware. The final icon is the already existing Blu-ray disc icon, presumably selected by the user to jump back into the game.

The video reveals nothing about the other columns, but details will surely emerge soon enough. All but confirmed? Very possibly, if this is definitely 2.40, which I’m merely speculating that it is. Either way, you can be sure of one thing in-game XMB is out there somewhere, and it’s coming.

I just wanted to be one of the first to say to Sony: Congratulations on finally bringing your online network into the 21st century. What’s next? In game invites?
