One game store in New Zealand to rule them all…

June 23rd, 2008 · 6 Comments

Of all the signs that indicate the end of the world, I think one of them should read “The only place you can buy a physical copy of your video game will be at a Gamestop.” While we’re not close to that yet, thank you to all that is good in holy, it looks like our favorite gaming store has expanded their horizons by yet another step.

Follow the jump for all the information we have.

According to our friends over at Geekpulp, it’s been all but confirmed that EB Games is buying out all of the Gamesman stores across the country of New Zealand. This basically means that if you live in New Zealand and want to shop for your games at a specialized store, you have one choice. You get a cookie if you can guess what that choice is.

The official word that’s been given to staff members of Gamesman stores is that this will just be a re-branding of the stores and no jobs will be lost in the process. However, for the stores that are already close to an EB Games, I doubt this statement is any kind of reassurance. In my mall, there are now two Gamestop owned stores within 30 feet of each other thanks to the merger that happened in 2005. One of those stores saw a huge drop in business and downsized their staff within a few months. I can see this happening, or even stores closing if EB buys out Gamesman.

Now, this isn’t completely confirmed yet, but Geekpulp has some Gamesman staff members stating this as fact. If it is true, at least EB Games isn’t nearly as bad as the original Gamestop. That’s some comfort, I guess… Even though they’re the same company.

      Im kinda confused!?

Here in Sweden we had a game store called “Tradition”. About two years ago (or something) the store was renamed to EB Games.

A couple of months ago it changed name once again to Gamestop. I think “Tradition” was part of EB Games, but is Gamestop also part of EB Games?

Well in Australia (Just west of New Zealand)
EB Games practically is the only game shop. There is a few smaller ones but not many people go to these stores.
