Playstation Blog announced Qore today. Qore, for all intents and purposes it seems to be a cross between an interactive magazine and the old-school Playstation Underground subscriptions. I used to subscribe to Playstation Underground back on the original Playstation and you’d get two discs about every three months for $30/year. On those discs, you’d get game previews, interviews, and most importantly, game demos. For what I got, I felt it was frequently worth it. I say frequently because occasionally they’d focus on content that wasn’t really that interesting to me and I’d have to wait ANOTHER three months for another dose. Why it really worked though is because it was the only real source of video game related video and demos I had access to on a regular basis. As we all know, the landscape has changed a LOT since then.
Something like Qore has never had more competition than it does right now. The announcement says we can expect “exclusive news, developer interviews, in-depth game previews and behind-the-scenes looks at PlayStation games and special access to game demos, special beta invitations, game add-ons and other downloadable game-related content.”
Let’s break that list of content down a little bit:
- Exclusive News – In today’s gaming news climate (for lack of a better term), it doesn’t matter where news comes from, it’s somewhere on the internet within 1.2 nanoseconds. So for folks that are wanting news hand delivered to their PS3 in HD, this may be a draw, but for folks wanting the absolute latest PS3 gaming news, it’ll make it onto the internet even if Qore is cited as the source.
- Developer Interviews – Most people care what is said, not necessarily seeing it be said. Again, I think this will largely leak onto the internet almost immediately if they happen to actually have exclusive interviews. One way this could work is if the interviews are heavily sprinkled with exclusive video content, screens, “first looks”, etc. in HD. Chances are, even if someone does (and you know they will) capture the video content and upload it somewhere free, if there is compelling stuff to look at (levels in progress, etc.) then you’ll want to see it in the original HD quality, versus a YouTube version.
- Game Previews – Well, Sony’s got dibs on their first party studios and frankly, there are a LOT of them. Again, the content of said previews needs to be compelling enough that people will want to see them in the native HD resolutions and not settle for YouTube quality captures of the content.
- Special Access – This needs to be cultivated like the “Playstation Underground” vibe of the mid-to-late nineties. There’s a fine line between creating a “club” vibe and giving those members something special versus taking what should be free and adding a fee to it. It’ll be interesting to see how this is handled.
- Game Demos – Unleash the hounds, grab the pitchforks and torches… I smell a Charlie Foxtrot of epic proportions unless this one’s addressed correctly and quickly. The sensationalism has already started that Sony will move to effective “charge” for demos. Rumors run rampant on the internet and gain steam along the way… if Sony (and the Qore) group aren’t careful here, their entire “club” vibe will spiral into a “tax” vibe. Pay your $2.99/month for access to demos. If they really do that or don’t clear it up, a lot of negative feelings will build up here.
- Beta Invites – This is a bona fide great idea and move on their part. People will do quite a bit to get into a beta. Hell, I reserved MGS4 just to get into the MGO beta. I’m a strong believer in not preordering games, but the thought of getting into that beta (which I ended up not really getting drawn into) changed my behavior. If they live up to the promise of offering beta access (or at least an increased chance of beta access) with a Qore subscription, I think people will be fine with that.
- Game Add-ons – The way I read this it implies you may actually get game content included in your Qore purchase… surely they wouldn’t limit the ability to purchase game-content to Qore subscribers, that’s just silly. Let’s artificially lower our possible customer pool, and then sell to only them… it makes no sense. I figure you’ll occasionally get a few “gimmes” or something. I doubt it’ll be on the scale of a map or mission pack, but maybe a character or vehicle skin.
- Game-related Content – The “content” part scares me a bit like the Game Demos part though… are they implying themes might migrate into Qore membership too or simply that there will be some themes only available through Qore? I’m not sure if you’ve noticed, but it’s easy to get Themes onto your PS3, but you can’t actively take them off. So while any website can create and provide themes, if Qore gives people Themes, there isn’t a way to copy that off your PS3 and give it to someone else. That said, if they do have some truly impressive themes, the $2.99/month fee isn’t an outrageous fee if you find the theme nice. That said, out of the free themes they’ve provided so far I can’t think of a single one I’d actually pay for.

This looks pretty awesome.
Unfortunately, as usual, I can’t see this coming to Europe any time soon.
You should read more of the comments on the PS Blog. It seems people always love to bitch about something…
90% of the people posting comments there are pretty much writing this off as paid advertisement…
I don’t know whether to say Duh, Doy, or a big sarcastic Oh really?
What the hell do you call gaming magazines? They’re nothing but advertising! Even an interview is just to try to promote a game! But since this is being distributed straight from Sony and not an independent source like GameInformer, people like to bitch that Sony is “charging” for content. Apparently people are greedy bastards and don’t realize that there are hundreds, if not thousands of employees, that work for sony and need to get paid… :-/
IMO those people really should be sterilized… They’re too stupid to breed. XD
I think it is a great idea, im not really in it for all the details how they worked on a game unless its a game I like then ill buy it but if this is a way to also get people into a beta then count me in. Aslong as I can join a beta then ill pay 2.99 for it. People cry too much about stuff, come on man, its not like there making us pay to play online and besides that u dont have to buy this if u dont want to, remember sony is offering this to people who really care about those things. Me personally am all about betas and if this is a way to get u in then im all for it.
Does anyone else around here think that the Qore thing is just a backdoor answer to Live?
Charging for demos and other “exclusive” content?
Lono, you do realize that MS charges you more than that JUST to play online. Everything else is free. PSN has free online play and the ability to pay for extras.
I know it’s backwards, but I still would prefer to be able to play online for free, and pay whenever I feel like it, not both (eg. gamerpics, themes, etc.)
Why is it so bad for Sony to start creating some competition against live? It’s not it’s required to pay to get demos and crap, you just get more stuff. Sure they could hold back on the amount they give you for free, but it is a business. In the end, no one has to pay the money, everyone still has free online play, and that’s all that matters.
The thing about Qore is that it’s going to create two sets of users; the Qore users (or will that soon be hardQore?) and the free-to-use PSN users.
The last thing the PSN needs is a hierarchy.
Just so everyone knows, Qore is just what OPM (The Official PlayStation Magazine) has evolved into. OPM was discontinued in the U.S. the month the PS3 was launched. In that issue the guy who ran the mag said that OPM would be back as a digitally distributed magazine on the PS3’s store. He even said back then (Decenber 2006) that they would have exclusive demos and beta keys that PSN wouldn’t have. He also said it would be a long ways off but it was already in the works back then. Even the publisher is the same (FUTURE Media), that’s right people, Qore has nothing to do with Sony aside from Sony distributing it on the PSStore.
Even the subscription price is the same $24.99 a year. OPM has always been more expensive than other mags due to the demo discs. No one ever complained about OPM gettin exclusive demos, why complain about it now that you also get Beta access? PSN is still going to get all the content it normally would. 3rd parties loved OPM, this just means MORE demos for PSN. And finally regular betas!! Qore is not a bad thing people, it’s a GREAT thing cuz it’s the return of OPM!! Sony should start making it a point to tell people this though, before fanboy propaganda brainwashes people into thinking Qore is paying for PSN, which it’s not. It’s paying for OPM, which all playstation fans did before it was cancelled. Thank you, and spread the word PS fans, before the propaganda kicks in.
I’m against it all around, for 2 reasons which I don’t think are unreasonable or sensationalized:
1. The whole thing REEKS of a 2 tiered system, as mentioned in the ‘Game Demoes’ outline.
2. News from the lips of Sony, is not news. It is a lie. Until it comes from a confirmed source and cited on Joystiq, NG4, Kotaku etc, it is just more crap, hearsay or outright lying from Sony.
They’ve completely destroyed their credibility since the launch of PS3, but now they want people to pay for their lies. I’m not buying it.
Wow, you really convinced me there Keith. So you trust hear-say news? To me, that kind of news is usually full of lies and fanboy comments.
