Call of Duty 5 is NOT subtitled “More Modern Warfare”

June 10th, 2008 · 12 Comments

Despite a *ahem* reliable source revealing that Call of Duty 5 was to be subtitled “More Modern Warfare”*, videogaming247 has a scoop on some solid details for the next game in the franchise. As we’d all thought, it’s set in World War 2 again, and in an act of madness by Activision, Treyarch have been parachuted in for development in place of CoD4-miracle-workers, Infinity Ward.

Non-fictional details after the jump…

Call of Duty: World at War (as it shall now be known, or if you’re like me and enjoy acronyms, you could call it CODWAW) will essentially be the series’ answer to Medal of Honor: Rising Sun, putting you smack-bang in the middle of the US-Pacific conflict of World War II. As you’d expect from an American development studio, you’ll be playing as a typical “hoo-hah” US soldier, albeit this time he’s a PoW saved from a detention camp in the nick of time (ie: on the verge of having his throat slit by a rather nasty Japanese prison officer).

Unfortunately, you can expect all of this to be delivered in the status quo of every single story-driven game released lately . That is to say, it’ll be gritty and mature. Hold me back. I’m personally expecting British types to show up again, although this time I expect them to be even more stereotypical, with bigger moustaches and a greater fondness for tea and crumpets than the SAS boys in Call of Duty 4.

In terms of gameplay, CODWAW will offer up co-operative multiplayer for the first time in the series, and vehicles and squad-based tactics will be thrown into the online mix too. You can expect the game to appear on every major format (PS3, 360, PC and Wii) with the main development team working on the first three versions and a secondary team working away on the Nintendo version. Every version will use the Call of Duty 4 engine, possibly meaning that Treyarch cannot undo all of Infinity Ward’s good work, and the Wii Zapper will be supported if any one’s crazy enough to buy it on this format.

There’s no word on the release date or any kind of screenshots, but the jabbering in the grapevine says that CODWAW will be formally revealed towards the end of the month. I’ll keep my fingers crossed with hope that Treyarch hasn’t broken anything or Infinity Ward will be able to do their “I told you so” dance. And it’s a pretty good dance too.

*I do indeed realize this was a fiction article, before anyone swoops in to correct me.

      not buying this game.
if activision/treyarch want my money, they will have to stop making f*cking ww2 games.
cod5 might not take place in germany, but it’s still ww2

So sad… Guess this means we’ll all be playing CoD4 until CoD6 comes out. Maybe we can talk Infinity Ward into pumping out some more maps to hold us over till they develop CoD6.

I am very skeptical abou the wii version for 2 reasons:
      1. Games that are on the 360 and PS3, when put on the wii usually suck.
      2. This is treyarch developing the game

At least we aren’t going to have to fight the Germans again. I’d rather have a COD set in WW1, or the Korean war, or the Vietnam war though.

You said “Non-fictional details after the jump”, whereupon I almost missed the fictional source. Can someone say “lie”?

I wanna play a ww2 game as the Germans. But, like, later in the game your character becomes a good guy and fights his own people. And in the end, you have to kill your best friend or something.

Now that, my friends, would be a cool ww2 game!

who’s suprised? All the console exclusive COD games have not been developed by infinity ward.

There’s only so much one dev team can do.

@boringsupreez: I hate do dissapoint you, but check the News…although its a pacific setting Treyarch is crazy enough to include a “Red Army invades Berlin” Level. Maybe a leftover from CoD3 ;)

You guys do realize their are a TON of futuristic/modern day shooters out their as well right? COD 4 really wasn’t that great, it still felt like the one’s before it, it only had a different setting.

Don’t sell this game short yet guys, no details have even been released for the thing! (Screenshots, videos, etc)

If you guys didn’t notice, it says the article is fictional.

yeah it does say fiction but it has been released that its going to WW2 and developed by treyarch

which is what is ruining it for everyone that they wont push forward
