Battlefield: Bad Company multiplayer is… delicious

Please note that my remarks are based soley on the MULTIPLAYER aspect of Battlefield: Bad Company, and do not reflect any impressions from the single player experience.

Battlefield: Bad Company has been a sort of sweet and sour experience. Maybe sour and sweet is a more accurate description. For a lot of people, the first they heard of the game was the epic scandal that broke out surrounding their original intention to charge extra money for special weapons in the game. After abandoning that plan for one that allows players the option of getting them “free” with the deluxe version of the game, or earning them (ala COD4), the whole mess boils down to one simple question.

Is it any good?

The short answer is “hell yes”.

For the long answer, hit the jump. (You know you want to.)

I was incredibly underwhelmed by the BFBC beta. It was laggy, the graphics were almost silly looking, and shooting someone to death was a rare occurence. Apparently, the devs took a lot of notes from their beta team, because everything that pissed me off about the beta, is now a reason that I now love this game.

The graphics have been polished beyond anything I expected, especially considering the number of players in a multiplayer match. The water is “realer”, the explosions are fantastic, and I can’t say that I’ve ever done anything more satisfying in a game than destroying walls. I know how dumb that sounds, but I spent a good half hour just breaking stuff in the demo.

The game experience was really lag-free. In the beta I felt like I had to lead my targets by a ridiculous amount but now I’m cutting down baddies like a lumberjack on steroids.

The weapons in the game were a blast to fire. My personal favorite is the sniper rifle. Despite the hectic pace of these games, you get more than enough chances to pick off an enemy if you know where to be and when.

If there were any one thing in this game that I would virtually guarantee to be award winning about BFBC it’s the incredible attention to detail in the sound design. From the crackle and thump of debris hitting dirt when a wall is destroyed, to the ching of spent rounds hitting the sheet metal floor of a humvee, audiophiles are going to love cranking up the Dolby Digital surround sound and making their neighbors believe an all out war for gold is happening in your living room.

By far I think the best vehicle in the game is the artillery. I am utterly addicted to the overhead view, and dropping ordinance onto the heads of unsuspecting tangos. Apparently I’m not the only one who feels this way, because I’ve been shot in the back by my own teamates on more than one occasion after occupying the “hand of God” for what they apparently felt was too long.

This game is a must-buy for any fan of the Battlefield franchise, and really does break new ground in gameplay tempo, destructible environments, and overall experience. With the weapons for money issues safely behind us, I plan to stand by what I said at the beginning of that fiasco.

They changed their tune.

I’m buying this game.

      lol @ “realer”

i think im still stuck on COD4… i played the beta, and it was okay… my “auto-aim” was still stuck in my head from GTA, but i got back into it, and was just a little underwhelmed… thats only from messing with story mode… i gotta try out the multiplayer demo… i loved me some BF2, so its only right to give it another whirl…

Best game ever! I think this will kill Cod 4 but definitely not 5.And also I have been killed by my team on”the hand of god”.

4 out of 5 games that I’ve tried have been so laggy I can’t play them. It’s not my net here either, if I jump onto a computer and ping out to somewhere I get a sub 50ms reply. Only thing I can think of is that there are no EU/UK servers up yet and I’m connecting to a US server.

Other than that, the multiplayer actually got my brother to stop playing CoD4 for longer than anything else out there. The disk is practically welded into his box, not playing anything (and I mean anything, not even GTA) since it was released.

My favourite class depends if I am attacking or defending. If on defence I go with Demolitions with the AT mines and the double barrel shotgun unlocked, tanks learn to fear me.

Attacking, I go support with the MG36 for long range suppressing fire and pin pointing targets to drop the unlocked mortars onto. Also gives a nice spawn point for squad members

One thing that I did notice as well is all actions seem slightly sluggish, again, I really hope this is due to lag rather than the actual game

If the problem is what I hope it is with multiplayer, this is a buy from me too

Spent a few hours in the multiplayer when they demo came out and I was pretty impressed.

The single player was another story, maybe I’m just judging it on CoD4 standards but I just found it terrible

      @Kiltman67

When has there been a really awesome single player campaign for any BF title?

    • balaamsafe says:

i love it, one question i need answering is how many players is the multiplayer, because as it’s a battelfield game i would expect at least 16, hopefully 32, but i have only been in games with about 10 people in the demo (although these games are still a blast)

    • Lono says:

looks like it will be at least 12 v. 12…

it is a pretty amazing game. But, I have to disagree with your opinion on the water. Both COD 4’s and BF:BC’s water looks like garbage, sorry.

That said, otherwise the whole thing is awesome. And the story will be cool too; who doesn’t want to steal gold and fight off two armies by yourself? ;)
