Baptist Church: SPORE is blasphemy

The president of the Southern Baptist Convention is calling Will Wright’s highly-anticipated new game, Spore, an insult to God and people of all faiths.

“What we have here is a tool to further distance people from their creator, by empowering to create life in any form,” said Gerald Hightower.  “As Baptists it is our duty to GAWD to stop this abomination before it gets into the hands of young impressionable minds.”

Calling the game “an insidious attempt by darwinist demons… to destroy the very fabric of family values” Hightower is calling on every Baptist in the Convention to fight this game’s release, “the way you’d fight Satan himself if he came for your children.”

Not surprisingly, Wright defended the game.

“I’m not saying that these people are crazy,” said Wright.  “But any faith that would be threatened by Fire-breathing-pelican-weiner-dogs really ought to be banned from buying koolaid and Nike running shoes.  That’s all I’m saying.”

In a related story, Wright is apparently already developing what is being called the “Utah Mod” for spore, where all of the creatures created look pretty much the same, but get gradually more retarded as their lineage increases.

I thought you were going to stop saying… ah, nevermind… Humor wins out! ;)

@ I was going to stop saying “that’s retarded”.

In this case I used RETARDED in a loosely fitting context.

In-bred retardation is a valid use of “retarded”. I consulted our legal team… oddly enough, they’re based out of Salt Lake City.

He gave me an envelope and then tried to act all cool and said “You’ve been served!” I laughed it off and tossed it in the garbage. I didn’t even WRITE the article… what a retard.

Wow dude are you serious? Have you read the bible? God NEVER approved of Solomons actions, Solomon chose for himself to let pride overtake him and thought he knew too much for his own good. Before you make an assanine remark like this maybe you should read up on your history.

As a person from a Christian faith the decision comes down to the individual if they feel it inappropriate for themselves or their children. Children are exposed to different views on a daily basis and it is up to the parents to explain their beliefs to their children. In this case Baptists have no duty to stop this game as everyone’s viewpoint is valid. I live in Australia but I know that America is a Christian nation or have a very strong believe in a God and If a vast majority have issues of this coming across as fact to child of different faiths maybe they can ask for a discloser message saying it is a game and not a representation of real life, I personally don’t this is needed as people have brains to make up their own mind. IMHO

Just curious, but where did you get this quote from?

I was hoping to read the original article but couldn’t find anything searching for Gerald Hightower or the above quote.

I’m a Christian (who actually goes to a Baptist church) and I was excited about Spore. It’s just a game. As Will Wright said, “But any faith that would be threatened by Fire-breathing-pelican-weiner-dogs really ought to be banned from buying koolaid and Nike running shoes.” (Now I want to make a Fire-breathing-pelican-weiner-dog when I get Spore). By the way, I don’t tie myself to any strand of Christianity. I am a Christian, and that is it.
