30 minutes to install a demo?

June 26th, 2008 at 3:00 pm · 16 Comments

I recently had the pleasure of playing the Fatal Inertia demo the other night.

The demo sucks, but that is a whole other article.

Let me start with the fact that I have Verizon FIOS. Download speeds of up to 15mbs and upload up to 5mbs. With my FIOS and a muliticell processor… it shouldn’t take more then 5 min. Hell, the file is less then 600 Megabytes.

Right?

Or so I thought.

Logging into the Sony Online Store I chose to check out the Fatal Inertia EX demo. I am a big fan of racing games, or anything that brings that competitive edge out in me. I just like to win. Except at life, but that’s another story…

After I clicked the “download now” button… instead of playing the racing game, the waiting game begain.

Here’s some things I did while I was waiting for it to download.

1) I paid ALL my bills (that was fun…)
2) I cooked dinner (Hmmmm, Spaghetti Oh’s, again!)
3) I ate dinner (Hmmm, Spaghetti Oh’s, again!
4) I cleaned my place up (I’m a slob.)

Maybe my internet was a little slow? Maybe that 100 meg porn file my roomate downloaded clogged up the internet? Who knows?

Then… when I saw that nice bar hit complete! I jumped in my chair and hit “OK.” Then it said “Install!!!” Whoa! WTF? You mean to tell me, that it took 25 min to download the file and now I still have to install it?

No lie… this thing took a half hour to install. This is what I did.

1) Watched paint dry
2) Put on some water and waited for it to boil
3) Walked a dog (I don’t even have a dog)
4) Spanked my monkey (I don’t even own a monkey)

It took a half an hour to install this game.

Why?

If a computer has the ability to help with the cure for cancer, and put up some of the most amazing games…

Why does it take almost an hour to install a damn demo?

Because the PS3 is more of a PC than a Console.

Never had a 30 minute install time on my PS3 but unfortunately slow downloads happen all too often.

the download speeds are your isp’s fault nothing to do with sony in japan you can download a 700mb demo in 2 with there faster speeds

Downloaded the same demo in 12 minutes, and installed in less than 2 minutes; Dunno what that’s all about.

I downed this in the UK from the US store – took an hour I think to DL (ah UK broadband rulez! NOT!) and then about 2 – 3 mins to install.

I wuold check that you HDD is not about to go TU Frawlz – also do you have the standard Sony disk or did you replace it with a bigger one?

Also lets break this down :-
      1) Watched paint dry – I’d say 10 mins max before you got bored
      2) Put on some water and waited for it to boil – 4 mins depending on kettle
      3) Walked a dog (I don’t even have a dog) – give Fido a good workoutmaybe 15 mins
      4) Spanked my monkey (I don’t even own a monkey) – Which leaves a total of 1 min for recreational simian chastisement : nice stamina man ;O)

      Cheers all,

      moose

Wow, strange that everybody’s PS3 download times vary so dramatically. Stranger yet though, the install speeds vary? Huh? Anyway, my 80 gig, also connected to FiOS (hard wired) downloaded in less than two minutes, and installed in under a minute. Weird.

Lucky, you have FIOS. Even if it were available in my area, I doubt my parents would pay for it. We are stuck with charter’s crappy ass cable internet. It is advertised @ 5Mb/s but we rarely get more than 100 KB/s (Note those were Kilobytes not kilobits 5Mb= roughly 625KB).

So yeah… anyways that must have really sucked though to have to wait THAT long for a crappy demo.

when i got ape quest from UK PSN store it took about half an hour to download and 2 minutes to install. Maybe Verizon FIOS were lying… lol but I had AOL so I can’t complain because my parents already have

You guys are crazy, it should take 0 minute to install!! The exact same demos on 360 would just launch, no install time what so ever. I know, because I have both consoles.
