I’ve noticed this trend for quite a while and have been trying to come up with a good way to discuss it. After letting the idea mull around in the back of my mind for a while, I think I’ve seen it played out enough to easily cut to the chase. The image and reception of the Playstation 3 is very much affected by whether the person looking at it already owns an Xbox 360 or not. Let’s take a closer look at how the PS3 is viewed differently by 360 owners and non-owners.
For those of you with ADD, I’ve broken it down into categories, complete with Bold lettering!
People That Don’t Own An Xbox 360
People looking into the PS3 that don’t already own a Xbox 360 haven’t been exposed to the current generation’s improved audio and graphic fidelity, or improved network capabilities. The current gen consoles have a library of dozens and dozens of good games. As someone looking at getting a PS3 that doesn’t already have a 360, the PS3 appears as a very viable choice. Fifty (and counting) good games, free online, Blu-ray movie playback, rumble controller, industry standard items such as (USB or Bluetooth keyboard/mouse/headset support, retail 2.5″ SATA drive support, uses regular power cables, uses regular HDMI cables or PS2 component cables, optical cable support without any sort of adapters, etc.), web browser, Linux support, etc. Depending on the model considered, you even get PS2 backwards compatibility and memory card readers built in. There are a lot of positive attributes to consider.
For clarification’s sake, what I’m calling a “good game” is a game with a cumulative metacritic score of 80 or higher (Metacritic makes the distinction at 75, which would add another 19 games to the list, but I personally have been treated well by considering 80 as the cutoff.) I realize everyone has different tastes, but as a rough metric, Metacritic is a decent enough starting point as anywhere else.
Most of those PS3 titles are multi-platform titles that are also available on the Xbox 360. If you ask Xbox 360 owners what they love the most about the platform, you’re likely to hear Xbox Live, Achievements, Gamerscore, or Xbox Live Marketplace. (possibly in that order.) The thing about all of those topics though is that they’re not that compelling until you’ve already been exposed to them. Telling someone that’s predominantly gamed on an Xbox, PS2, or GameCube that Xbox Live is “all that” might not be received as enthusiastically as someone that’s used Live on the 360 for a year or more.
Achievements and Gamerscore can sound even a bit funny when you’re describing them to people unfamiliar with them. If you describe how you’ll become addicted to Achievements and increasing your Gamerscore, some folks might even take that “addiction” aspect as a negative counterpoint to consider. Why would you intentionally _want_ to be addicted to something?
Without knowing more, the PS3 would appear pretty appetizing to a new console buyer.
People That Do Own A Xbox 360
For the folks that already own a Xbox 360. They already know the quality and features of Xbox Live. They already know about Achievements and Gamerscore. They also, largely only view the PS3 as something to use for games they can’t already get on their platform. The list of PS3 games on Metacritic with a score of 80 or higher is suddenly roughly 1/3 of what it was. So instead of (currently) 50 games, they’re looking at 16 retail games plus Blu-ray playback.
On the whole, most people would probably agree that the Xbox 360 controller is a more comfortable controller than the PS3’s controller, although the DualShock3 has done a lot for the PS3’s controller issues. We’ve yet to have a PS3 box/bundle released in the US yet that includes the DualShock3. That’s set to change with the release of the MSG4 bundle next month.
So to a happy 360 owner, it’s somewhat easy to see why they might not value the PS3 as much as someone that doesn’t own a 360 (or worse yet, someone that owns and is unhappy with the 360) does. While it’s a completely valid viewpoint to have, I think a lot of the “fanboy wars” or “flamewars” on the various gaming forums around the net stem from people’s inability to put themselves into other people’s shoes. As someone that falls into this category, I can totally understand how someone crazy about console FPS games and loves to play competitively online would value the 360 very highly. I can see that.
What This Means For The Future
If you look at the combined install base from the last generation of consoles, you’ve got: GameCube (21M worldwide), Xbox (24M worldwide), and PS2 (127M worldwide). Combined, that’s a very large number… 172 million people. Yes, clearly there is overlap between the consoles and there are folks that bought more than one PS2 to replace aging/broken units, but when you look at the Xbox 360’s 19M worldwide and the PS3’s 13M worldwide, there is a LOT of room for additional sales. Even throwing the Wii’s 24M in there doesn’t drastically change the numbers. There are a LOT of folks that bought systems last gen that haven’t bought systems this generation. Those are the folks that are more likely to see the PS3 in a much better light than the 19M 360 owners do.
A lot of folks see it as an inevitability for the PS3 to surpass the 360 in total sales and I think this will play a large factor in the PS3’s success. Perception sometimes can become reality. Strong exclusives will win over multi-console folks to pick up a PS3 in addition to their 360 and the continually growing library and feature list will make it compare better and better to the folks owning neither, but looking to buy into the current generation of consoles.
We’ve got one of the biggest exclusives of the year (for either platform) launching in 30 days to very little competition. We’ve got millions of people that haven’t bought into one (or both) of the current-gen consoles. We’ve got prices that can only go down and game libraries that can only increase in size. It’s a great time to be a gamer and that certainly applies to being a Playstation 3 gamer as well. The legitimacy of owning a PS3 for gaming purposes is no longer something that should be qualified by a question mark. It’s absolutely true that the draw to a PS3 is less if you already own a 360, but the draw is still there and I’d say for folks without a 360, you can pick up a PS3 and you’ll most likely always have something interesting to play.
Okay, let me have it guys. I want to hear what you think. If you decide to simply take the “Bah! He’s just a fanboy!” way out and not give any weight to what I say, I’d love to hear your arguments for why the PS3 doesn’t compare at least (if not more) favorably to the 360 for someone that doesn’t already own or isn’t very familiar with a 360. Be objective and realize things you value may not seem valuable to them. Bring it.

you have good points Rothbart, tbh, I have been wanting a PS3 for some time now, for a couple of reasons. 1 reason being MGS4 and a PS3 is cheaper than a gaming PC
2 RK1 FaMiCuS // May 14, 2008 at 4:39 pm
I’m a Xbox 360 owner, pretty much the main reason why I don’t own a PS3 is that there are not any games that make me want to get a PS3. Most of the games that I like are multiplatform and/or are Xbox exclusives. Another thing is I have more friends that have a Xbox 360 rather than a PS3, and I always prefer to play with friends rather than random people. I personally feel that Xbox 360 controller isn’t the best, but for me it more comfortable than the PS3’s, mainly the triggers on the PS3’s controllers, my finger usually slide off and that is not something you want when playing shooters or driving game. I do feel that the PS3 is a great piece of technology and can’t wait for developers to expand on the features it is able to do, but till then I going to have to wait till I shell out $600- $700.
3 XxAdyxX // May 14, 2008 at 5:02 pm
I simply can’t find a game on the PS3 that I can’t live without.
MGS4 could change all of that, though. Being a huge fan of the series myself, and looking to pick up a Blu-Ray player on the cheap (well, cheaper because of everything the PS3 can do in addition to playing games) has made me consider a PS3. I have to say that the PS3 doesn’t have as much to offer as the 360, but it’s getting to be a closer race.
MS needs to put out a new 360 with a lot of extras to pull back out in front IMHO. And this time, maybe they can make them work correctly from the release date.

I agree a lot with what you’re saying Rothbart, but You’re flat overlooking the issues the PS3 DOES have. And to be turned off by the 360 for having the edge in third party support, doesn’t make sense.
5 iwantmyps3 // May 14, 2008 at 5:17 pm
the xbox 360 is failing in all markets. as i have said time and time again M$ just cannot win the fight or the war. i work at a gamestop and i will tell you more and more people are buying a ps3 and trading their 360 in on one.
the only game this year M$ has is gears of war 2 and really who the hell wants to play that? when the ps3 has MGS4 and Killzone 2 and Final Fantasy 13 and about 25 titles that are coming out on the ps3 that everyone wants.
M$ sucks and so do the xbot fanbois.
6 Sean "Rothbart" Workman // May 14, 2008 at 5:29 pm
@Lono: I’m not turned off by the 360 _because_ it has the 3rd party edge… I never said that. I’m disappointed that the 3rd parties can’t pull their crap together on the PS3. If it wasn’t for the 3rd party games, I’d probably have sold (or never bought) a 360 to begin with. I use my 360 99% of the time playing 3rd party games.
And yeah, the PS3 does have issues but they’re nowhere near the scope or “in your face” as the issues I’ve experienced with my 360. My issues with Microsoft and the 360 are “mine”, I clearly see that… but several (hundred thousand or even millions) have THEIR own issues just like mine with failures, crappy customer service, being made clearly aware that they’re not important and can be treated like crap with no repercussions. I’ve yet to have experiences like that with Sony and while their library isn’t as big and their feature list isn’t as long… they haven’t been asses to me, I’ve had enough games to play when I’ve had time to play, and their feature list is constantly growing. That’s basically it.

@ I want my PS3.
Right off my mind…
Left for Dead,Alan Wake,Halo Wars,Fable 2,Ninja Gaiden 2,Too Human World in Conflict.
And out of your list, Killzone was mediocre and nobody will buy FF outside of Japan so you’re only left with MGS4 and LBP.I mean wow, that’s one certain and one possible Killer App.Well Done!
8 iwantmyps3 // May 14, 2008 at 5:38 pm
@jakubk
all of those games are coming out or are out on the pc and lets look at them.
left for dead another zombie shooter that will do well on steam unless valve decides to put it in half life 2 ep 3.
alan wake is like duke nuke’m forever we will see maybe a video this year for it. too human looks bad and isn’t there still a court thing with that game? and we will get ninja gaiden 2 on the ps3 after all we have ninja gaiden black and it is so much better on the ps3. oh and fable was one of the most overrated games ever.
then we have halo wars and world in conflict. one is on the pc the other will end up on the pc too.
and what do we have? final fantasy 13 a hit in the making. killzone 2 a game that will blow halo 3 and cod 4 away. mgs4 a system seller and we are most likely getting mass effect and bioshock this year.
i think it is safe to say another sony win has just been had.
9 Richard // May 14, 2008 at 5:50 pm
Yes i own a 360 but that has nothing to do with my bias against sony.
My bias against Sony dates back to the orginal PSX when sony orginally muscled it’s way into the games market. Sony have always been the masters of marketing and it has put the nail in the coffin of some of the most innovative platforms created: The Saturn, the N64 and finnally the Dreamcast.
Basicly I just hate them, I can’t even really justify it really, but everything they do just seems to annoy me…
Yep hopelessly biased
10 Kiltman67 // May 14, 2008 at 6:02 pm
I’ve read this over a couple of times to check, but the one obvious thing that seems to be missing is that while you may be right and “last gen” gamers may see the PS3 in a positive light, but they’re also going to be influenced by the current dominance of the 360 (compared to the PS3, ignoring the Wii).
People tend to follow the crowd and even if they see the PS3 as a viable choice, if they see the majority of other gamers with a 360 then they’re going to be swayed in that direction. Not because all their friends are on Live, but because it’s just the console to buy if you want to game.
The one topic I’m yet to see see any journalist really engaging with is the effect that the 360 is having on the Playstation brand. In the UK at least, the name Playstation is synonymous with games consoles and gaming in a way that only the Gameboy seems to have been before. People don’t “play video games”, they “play Playstation”.
But as more people get into the 360, people will see there’s more to gaming then the Playstation, and the balance will begin to tip in the other direction.
As I said, it may just be a UK thing and the name Playstation may not carry the same weight around the rest of the world.
11 CallMeEsteban // May 14, 2008 at 6:12 pm
Okay, I’m definitely biased, I own a 360, LOVE my 360, absolutely addicted to achievements, and love the games I’m playing now. I wanted to say to some on here, what about the games which …”are most likely getting mass effect and bioshock this year.” Well, I’ve been playing those for months now. I could wait for great titles like these or have my 360 and play them now. The only titles for PS3 I would be excited about would be MGS4 or Killzone, but overall, It’s not worth $400 for the console plus the $120 for those two games ($520) to go out and buy a PS3.
I would like to have BluRay capability, but right now, I can pass on that.
Eventually I will get a PS3, maybe Christmas, but as much as it kills me, I don’t know if there will be a platform as good as the 360 out for a while. Just my opinion, admittedly flawed and biased =)

consoles are just another way to make you guys lighter, if you know what i mean $…that was not the reason why they are invented, was entertaining, and it remained the point of their existance, but c’mon..don’t you see that in at least every year they come out with another, and all of you are jarring over and over which one is the best..it doesnt make any sense…i agree that gaming is fun, i love video games, and i used to play with consoles, but until they haven’t became another reason to spend money and argue ps3 is better than xbox…blabla meaningless topic, if you ask me, ps3 looks better, and microsoft shall not take a part of business that they have nothing to with…
cmon guys..

14 Blades144 // May 14, 2008 at 7:23 pm
I think for someone that doesn’t own a 360, that the draw of a PS3 is much stronger due to the Blue Ray factor, now the HD format war is over.
There are more compelling reasons to go with a PS3, one I never seem to hear mentioned is the fact that you can run a couple flavors of Linux straight off the console with very little effort. I wish more people would try it out before they take a stab at “Linux is too hard to figure out!”. It’s a free OS and it will run on your PS3! You will never see that on a 360.
Don’t get me wrong, I am not biased, I own all three next gen consoles (if you put Wii in that category). I game about half and half on both the 360 and the PS3 and hardly touch the Wii (insert joke here). I do hate that Sony won the format war but I am not going to sit on the bench and pout while everyone else enjoys the spoils.
I have had about a dozen or so people asking me which console they should buy and I always tell them the same thing, buy an HDTV and a PS3.

I thrive on the technical triumphs that the ps3 have had…out of the box its wireless, has bluetooth capabilities, the blueray player, the free online service, the psp conectivity…..there is a list somewhere on the net…
i just feel the ps3 from a “*techinical stand point*” is better than the xbox360
16 Syntaxman // May 14, 2008 at 7:29 pm
I own a Wii and a 360, i also for the record find it insulting that you forget about brawl and the Wii for that matter except in the sales figures
I don’t own a PS3 because all i could see myself playing is: Resistance, Ratchet and Clank, and Haze, maybe Heavenly Sword.
MGS sucks

The Xbox 360 has no more than 3 exclusives that stand out.
While the PS3 has at least 9 exclusives that stand out!
Coming up, the PS3 has:
MGS4
MGO
Tekken 6
FFXIII
FFXVersusXIII
Coded Arms: Assault
DC Universe
Disgaea 3
Gran Turismo 5
Haze
HOME
Killzone 2
LittleBigPlanet
Motorstorm 2
Naruto: UNS
Resistance 2

I own the 360 and PS3 and for a new gamer or for someone that is coming from the last gen consoles I can see both having a good appeal. The 360 has been established for a few years now. It has a very solid game lineup (Halo 3, Gears of War, Viva Pinata (sp?), Bio Shock. FORZA 2…). Xbox Live (while it can go out at bad times) is very easy to use and easy to manage, adding friends is simple as well as talking to them. Heck the 360 does come with a headset after all! The 360 may have the RROD but that is something you live with and I have had my 360 since launch and the only reason I have had 2 is because the elite came out.
The PS3 can look good because it does have bluray (assuming the gamer has an HDTV), it has promising games coming out for it and a few good ones now. You get free online play and access. However, the flaws here are that it came out later than the 360 so you might not have many friends playing the PS3 (MAY NOT). There aren’t a whole lot of games out right now and the ones that are good are fairly short and doesn’t have a whole lot of replay value. The online network (while better now, PSN Store) is fairly weak and CAN BE (not IS) harder and more confusing to use. It also seems to see game delays (on multiplatform games) or has been the cause for a delay of a game.
While I have both, I play the 360 more (in fact I don’t own a single PS3 game, I have rented, but nothing out there that is worth my 60 bucks). The achievements are addicting and is probably one of the biggest things that MS did right and I don’t mind paying for my online use seeing how I believe that the online system is worth it.
I am now ready for backlash. (and no, I am not really looking forward to Killzone 2, MGS4, or FF:13…never really liked the earlier games.)
19 smokez4Dayz // May 14, 2008 at 7:40 pm
I’m a proud 2 year owner of a 360, love the perks of having a 360, I haven’t gotten a PS3 for the same reason I didn’t buy a Xbox last gen: Not enough exclusives. I don’t care about any game sony had on PS1 and they put a shiny coat of next gen, its still the same games over and over. Free online lends itself to alot of reckless users, potty mouth disconnecting glitchers, I used to hate Socom 2 with the invisible people. Live still has its mass amounts of idiots too, but Sony just seems to be copying everyone this time around. I’ve gotten 4 of my friends to get 360’s in the last 3 months, they’ve liked what they’ve seen.
20 Showtime95 // May 14, 2008 at 7:47 pm
I have both the 360 and PS3. I bought the PS3 for bluray, and that is what it has been used for. I still have yet to see a game that I “really” want or that I think would be better than the xbox version. Frankly, Microsoft got this one right. Achievements was brilliant. This not only lets you be more competitive (or lets you get bragging rights among friends) but they can be addicting. I love achievements and mainly because of this I by the 360 version of the multiplatform games. I know that the PS3 will have Home and will have some sort of the same thing but where is it? It isn’t out yet and my gamerscore is so big that I don’t have any will or want to start it over again on the PS3.
Another thing that makes the 360 more appealing to me is, like others mention, all my friends have a 360 and a Live account. This is mainly due to the fact it came out first so people bought it instead of waiting…if the PS3 came out first I am sure it would be the other way around.
Lastly (even though I could go on) Xbox Live is a great service. It has it’s flaws (going down at bad times…)but overall it is great. Easy to find and see friends (and talk to them), easy to find demos and downloads (but this culd be becasue I have used it a lot more). The PS3 Network is better now but I still find that trying to download a demo takes way too long (Haze took me almost 7 hours to download and why do they not install while downloading? I hate waiting for it to DL and then have to wait for it to install) I have cancelled a lot of downloads due to this. While it is free, it is flawed.
Now I will probably get told that we “xbots” have to worry about the RROD but while that is a flaw you come to know about it and I honestly have never had it and would still have my launch system if it wasn’t for the Elite version coming out. And I see a lot of xbox exclusive games this year that look very promising and I for one don’t care if they will be on the PC later, I run a Mac!
There’s my response…perhaps I will put more into this in a blog.
21 NoneOfYourBusiness // May 14, 2008 at 7:56 pm
Wtf 7 hours? Took me 15 mins to DL and 5 to install. MGS Beta…1 hours to DL, Install, resgister, create a character n play. I don’t know where the heck people pull these insane numbers from. It isnt PSN its YOU.
22 Brutal // May 14, 2008 at 8:08 pm
The 360 is a much stronger system overall than the Xbox was last generation, but I feel to an extent it has reached somewhat of a standstill. Huge amounts of people bought the 360 just for Halo 3. I realize there are more games than that but a lot of people don’t.
A lot of my friends who were die hard 360 are getting (or have gotten) PS3s, so its nice to have other people to play with hah. Trying to be completely, absolutely, unbiased here, I do think that the PS3 has a stronger line up this year between R2, LittleBig Planet, HOME, and MGs4 alone. And FF will sell PLENTY outside of japan, btw.
23 cell // May 14, 2008 at 8:08 pm
damn,……… XBOTS all over the place, hard to dodge them all, oh well back to the gun cannon.
The fact is that precious XBOX of yours is running out of steam, 1 year ago, youmy XBOT friend; could have argued that the 360 had better games, better service, blah blah blah. Today is 2008 the real contest has begun, no more PS3 development issues, no more half ass network, no more HDdvdvsBluray, no more lack of rumble, blah blah blah. Games??? yes the PS3 has GOOD games, yes the PS3 has a decent network, yes rumble is back, yes blu-ray is the only HD format now, yes AAA exclusives still exist, and PS3 has some very good ones coming up,soon. What? you say Achievements, xbox live???, I think that argument will be dead in a couple of months, yes it was awesome in 2007, but Home will rape the living S*** out of xbox live, and yes even you the XBOT knows it. Stop praising the service, this is why Microsoft keeps on charging you for it, the more you vow for it the more expensive your online needs will be.
I strongly recommend that you guys start pushing MS to improve Xbox Live, or it will never be more then what it is now(a text-based interface that requires a fee to operate). Stop paying for something that should be free, you XBots backlash yourselves when you argue how great XBOXLIVE is, MS sees this and they justify themselves. No, you guys need to start asking to be treated like everyone else, Sony, Nintendo, the PC world, dont charge scrap for online play.

I agree completely. I have both and will always by the 360 version of the game for achievments. If there had not been achievements or gamerscore, who is to say? Both are quality systems in their own right There are exclusives on the PS3 that I will have to play, MGS 4, Killzone 2 (if it has co-op, that is a major selling point for me in first person games now a days) and Resistance 2. I really enjoyed the first 1 and Uncharted (the only 2 games I own for the PS3, compared to my 16 for the 360) I have seen arguments from all sides of the fanboy wars, and the point I am trying to make is that as long as it has good games on the platform, I will play them.

I couldn’t agree with you more. Having both systems gives me the opportunity to play all the great games (or at least try them) that come out for both systems. If it wasn’t for the achievements who knows what way I would go. Perhaps my game collection would be more balanced out.
Honestly, I really don’t mind paying for Xbox Live. If the PS3 charged for it there would be no one using this as an excuse. I would pay for PS3 online too if it ever changes.
@NoneOfYourBusiness
Maybe you can tell me how to make my DL speed faster, because the Xbox and PS3 are hooked up the same way and the PS3 has always been slower.

I love my Xbox 360, and would never trade it for a PS3 for any reason. To all you who say the PS3 is better, your opinions are not facts, though you may wish that to be true.
@taxas: So what you’re saying is that everyone who bought 360s bought them because they were poor, and that we are all jealous of PS3 owners? I think I may have peed myself laughing. PS 3 is not better period. Each system is worth different amounts to each individual owner. I had a PS2 originally, and I bought an Xbox 360, and I could not be happier.

i have a 360 and a ps3, and i personally think that xbox live blows, i have almost never played for more than an hour without a lot of lag, and the load times on 360 piss me off and ruin the games for me. And the lag is not on my end I have fios, i download files at 2-3 mb a second. I think the main reason i hate live is X-Mas is the only time i can game a lot other than some Sundays and live was down all of x-mas. I only get lag every now and then on psn maybe once in like 3 hours. The load time on the games is a lot shorter on the ps3.

I, too, own both a PS3 and and XBOX360. I had my PS3 for about a year before i bought the box. although i love 360 for its marketplace (renting movies and buying tv shows), i still like the PS3 better. This year will see some amazing exclusives (although they will probably be delayed-im used to that being a ps3 owner). the ONLY reason i originally bought the 360 was for halo and gears, but i found that it is a pretty good system. Right now it just collects dust….im too used to my ps3. they are both awesome systems. If you own a 360, buy a ps3…ITS WORTH IT! If you own a ps3, buy a 360…ITS WORTH IT! quit with all the fanboyism. btw… PS3 FTW!

Why have a not heard one comment say “droid” or “PS3 Fanboy” but I’ve already seen a few names being called at the 360 and it’s fans.
Grow up!
I have a friend at work that has been gaming on the 360 for about 1 year. He really wanted to play MLB the Show so he went out and bought a PS3 and I told him it was a decent investment. He played MLB the show for one weekend and promptly returned the PS3 with the quote “the PS3 sucks”. True story, just told me today. So I think once you get a taste of the 360 you find the PS3 lacking. Both systems have their pluses and minuses. I didn’t see you mention price anywhere in the arguments which can also be a factor.
I think sifer2400 has summed up my arguments against the 360 slander in these comments. Nice one. Too much FUD being spread about the 360 lately people need to call these people out.

As someone who owns neither an Xbox360 or PS3 I see much more value in the PS3 because it comes standard with so many things that the Xbox360 either doesnt have or forces you to buy from Microsoft at an exorbitant cost. Here is the that list:
Blu-Ray
7.1 Audio
SD Memory card slot
Wifi
Blue-tooth
Upgradeable Hard Drive
Web Browser
Ability to support a standard Operating System
Quietness
Reliability
Online play

I just have to say one thing that kind of goes along with what everybody else on here is saying. I own both the PS3 and Xbox360 (and Wii for that matter), I play both pretty equally nowadays. However, I still think Xbox is better. Like others have said, I think that once you have used the Xbox360, you realize how far the PS3 is behind in terms of features. It’s catching up (with the new PSN, dual shock 3, video service, the trophy system, @home, and possible in game XMB), but thats the problem, its always catching up. The xbox has had most of these features since launch. Overall, its just more “slick.” Thats the best way i can describe it. Another problem i have with PS3 is that people always talk about “whats coming.” Killzone was shown before launch and it was delayed again. I feel like Xbox offers things in the now instead of in the future.
Its possible that it just depends on what system you got first, thats what it sounds like from these comments.
That being said, i’m looking forward to Gears 2, MGS, Killzone 2, Fable 2, etc….lots of good gaming, no matter what system you have (except for Wii….jk [kinda])

It’s funny how most of you bring up the ps3’s better graphics but I don’t recall most of you selling your ps2’s to get the better xbox. Games make the system not graphics and seeing how blu ray’s sales have tanked I don’t see how you can justify buying a ps3 if you already own a xbox 360. I have both systems and I find myself playing the xbox 360 more because I’ve spent more money on 360 games not because I hate sony or the ps3.
38 Elisio // May 14, 2008 at 10:51 pm
After having a PS1 and a PS2, i decided to go for a new brand this generation, especially because i was having the feeling that going from PS1 games to their PS2 sequals, asside from better textures…. there was no difference. Take the gran turismo series for example: From GT1 to GT4, what changed asside the graphics ?? No damage, no online, dumb AI, 6 cars on track, etc… just like most people who only played on sony’s machine, i thought that GT4 was a great game! Everything changed however when i started checking out game review on the net…. When i discovered that the X-Box had a game called Forza and that emplemented everything i wanted GT to be…. i decided to change. The truth is: if you’re born one eyed…. you think that your vision is ok…. until you get to see for your two eyes and find out what you missed. My point is that, most gamers in the last generation who played on the PS2, think that they had great gaming experiences with all the well known franchises……. but in reality they missed better experiences they could have had on the X-Box, if only they were not so norrow-minded. I gave Forza as an example, but they are many more… Metal Gear Solid for instance… what’s all the hype for?? If you look at reviews critics you will see that splinter cell series have nothing to be ashamed of……. however, if you compare actual hype between MGS4 and Splinter Cell convictions…. a novice would have the impression that MGS4 is a way better game! Another example is Final Phantasy….. sure the series has a great reputation……. but does anyone who already played Star Wars KOTOR will feal that impressed?? Does anyone who played Ninja Gaiden Black think that Devil may Cry stands a chance ??
Unfortunately, showing that a product is better than the other, still doesn’t garantee people will buy it…. When we compare the 360 to the PS3 now….. how can a rational consumer be willing to pay more for a PS3 ?? Some may argue it is for Blue Ray…. however, does any of us have a problem with the DVD image quality?? Isn’t it good enough?? If it isn’t, why most people watch movies on DivX then?? guess because they are willing to give up on image quality to be able to fill a DVD with more content!! So after all, do we value image quality that much?? Others may argue that it is because the console has more power (or potential)…. well if this was a real reason, these same people would have bought a N64 instead of a PS1, and a X-Box instead of a PS2, and for $500-$600, i think upgreading your PC with a propper GPU is definately smarter….. (unless you thing Crysis and Uncharted are on par grafically!:P). The moral of the story, is that most consumers are just not rational…. How can you explain that despite the X-Box 360 Elite being cheeper than the 40 Gb PS3 version in europe, PS3 is still selling more (by a small margin… but still more). The brand is more important than everything else….(even when ferarri sucked in Formula one, it still got more supporters than MacLaren). The funny thin though is that consumer fidelity is the most stupid reasoning….. it can just be compared to a dog reasonning: Whathever you say boss…… i’ll do! Guess us here in Europe are not much clever than our pets……at least when it comes down to choosing our consoles!

Pretty intriguing article. It’s true that when you try to describe a gamerscore to some one, it doesn’t seem like that big a deal, and I think that that fact is pretty significant.
Plus, gamerscores seem hardcore when described in words, compared to the PS3 which has a lot of more friendly features. Notice how all of the big games last year for PS3 were rated T or lower, where as the 360’s top games were all rated M? That effects perception of the systems as well.
On the topic of features, there are a lot of PS3 features that no one ever really talks about. Stuff like 6 way video chat, and the ability to show photos from your PS3 HDD during those chats. For those who don’t consider themselves hardcore gamers, these are neat, I would call them “tech features.” When I show someone my gamerscore, or the ability to join a game online by pushing just two buttons, it doesn’t really get any “Wow’s,” but the video chat, slideshow features, music visualizer, video thumbnails, etc on the PS3 do get those “Wow’s.” It’s like how people must have felt when they first saw TV’s.
Granted, the population of self identified “gamers” on the internet probably doesn’t care about such stuff, but a large majority of the people who will buy consoles will, and I think that gives the PS3 the edge for people who have yet to purchase a net-gen system.
41 Not a Fanboy // May 15, 2008 at 12:35 am
I upgraded from PS2 to Xbox, then to Xbox 360 and now I have a PS3 which in my opinion is an upgrade from 360.
I still have my 360 and still play on Live with peeps in my friends list. I have over 40 games for 360 and 13 for PS3.
I have never been truly sataisfied with 360. My excitement was dashed a bit when I first turned it on and it sounded like it might take off. Way too noisy for a supposed high end device. I had disc read errors from day one with brand new discs, WTF.
I almost got hooked on Gamerscore but soon realised that it means absolutely nothing. I like achievements in games, just not the one total score. Microsoft took casual singleplayer gaming and turned it into a competition which sucks. Cheat guides are now called Achievement Guides which somehow makes it more acceptable to use them. Gamerscore ho’s have exploited the system with cheat guides and piss easy kids games for a quick 1000 points. It has cheapened the whole system to the point where nothing is real anymore.
The friends list and message integration in game over xbox live is great but the peer 2 peer setup is a laggy mess alot of the time. It may work better for Americans and Europeans where more people have fast net speeds but not so for Australians. My net speed is awesome but many Aussies have uploads of less than 256kbps and in peer 2 peer they drag the whole game down for everyone.
PS3 was like a breath of fresh air and about as quiet as one too. Great for all media playback and game audio. The exclusives like Uncharted, Ratchet and Clank TOD and GTP5 Prologue are better than any 360 game I have seen.
Dodgy 3rd party ports of games that led on 360 have hurt the system but thankfully now the Devs are getting wiser. Even EA got it right with Burnout Paradise and NFS: Prostreet which both look and play better on PS3.
COD 4 and GTA IV also look better on PS3 with larger textures and more colour.
Blu Ray is amazing if you have the right display to make the most of it.
@ patrick, Standalone BluRay players have tanked but the movies have a better adoption rate than DVD’s had so the future is bright and Blu.
PS3 online has it’s flaws with no in game XMB yet but that is on the way. In the meantime the Dev’s have sorted game invites, and in some cases messaging, by putting the option into the games menus.
The PS3 has a good future ahead of it. Uncharted and Ratchet both blow 360 away whilst only using the main processor in the Cell. Now Devs are exploring how to use the 6 SPU’s as well so we will see some sweet improvements in game engines, graphics and audio.
BTW does anyone know why 360 still costs so much? Microsoft havn’t hidden the fact that they are making a truckload of profit on the systems and the games and out of Live Subscriptions. The technology isn’t even really next gen, more like last gen x 3.
42 Meresin // May 15, 2008 at 12:57 am
I bought a PS3 to replace an aging gaming PC because it provided the best value since it also doubles as a Blu-ray player. I’ve found myself very pleased with its performance as a gaming platform. In all honesty, I’m perfectly happy with my decision to purchase a PS3 over an Xbox 360, and I’ve no plans to purchase a 360. From a value standpoint, it really doesn’t offer me anything that the PS3 doesn’t outside of the social experience from Live, and that’s something that is being worked on by Sony.
The 2008 game lineup is more than enough to keep me busy, too. We’ve got MGS 4, Little Big Planet, SOCOM: Confrontation, and Resistance 2 all coming in 2008. That’s not counting cross-platform games, either, of which there’s a number of solid ones coming that I will likely pick up.
All in all, I’d say that the situation here goes both ways. I’m a PS3 owner that sees no reason to purchase an Xbox 360. Admittedly, the game catalog of the 360 is quite big, and has a lot of nice titles in it…But to me, they’re just not enough to justify dropping an additional $350 on when a lot of newer titles will be cross-platform anyway. Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure it’s a hell of a gaming platform, but I can’t justify the additional cost when the PS3 provides so much of the same functionality already, and is continually improving.
It is of some note that I wasn’t a console gamer before I purchased the PS3, but I saw it as the best bang for my buck overall. My PC was getting on in years and needed to be either upgraded or replaced, so I was faced with two options. Upgrade the PC for upwards of $1,500, or pick up a console. I chose the latter, and grabbed the console that also offered up the addition of Blu-ray functionality. That’s not something I regret. Blu-ray movies look absolutely amazing on my 61″ DLP HDTV…And no, upconverted DVDs don’t even come close.

Now, to ensure _I_ add to the conversation. I think there has been some actual _quality_ discussion both here and over at this posts’s N4G entry. My point is pretty validated… there are a LOT of people saying that not owning a 360 makes them view the PS3 in a better light _and_ that Achievements/Gamerscore/Live aren’t as much of a “known value” to people new to this generation.
46 Dakkster // May 15, 2008 at 3:34 am
Jesus, some of you people are vehemently fanboyish. Give it a rest already.
Myself, I own a 360 and my best friend has a Wii and a PS3, so I’ve gotten significant time with all three of them. The reason I got a 360 was because I thought it had the best features a year ago. I still think that. The best game library, the best online service, achievements (that give the games so much more lifespan) and interesting titles coming up, from my point of view. That’s not to say that the PS3 is bad. A year ago, it simply lost out to the 360 from my perspective. Why? Because I didn’t think it was worth the money to get a limited experience compared to the 360. However, I’m pretty sure that I’ll be buying a PS3 soon enough, but not before its exclusive game library has become bigger, not before Home (with all its features) is working and not before its price goes down. When those three things happen, I’ll consider its value good enough to buy.
About the upcoming exclusives though. I’ve never really liked the MGS games and I also haven’t liked the FF games since about 8. Both of those franchises feel more like interactive movies than actual games nowadays. Killzone 2 looks interesting, but after the first one stunk it up, I’m wary of the sequel. LBP looks the most interesting to me, but I also fear that it’s a bit too gimmicky for my taste. Haze looks like another Dark Sector, overhyped crap. My point is that exclusives aren’t always the best games for all people and tastes. For me, Ninja Gaiden 2 is the game of the summer, apart from GTA4 because I haven’t had the time to sink my teeth into that one yet because of hectic university studies. Oh well…
In the end it’s all good for us gamers right now. And will someone PLEASE announce a sequel to Dead Rising 2?
47 doobiwan // May 15, 2008 at 4:02 am
While I mostly agree with your sentiment, I have to issues to mention.
You have not included the weight of the 360 games library. Yes the PS3 has a fair number of good games, but as you said the 360 catalogue and future releases eclipse the PS3 significantly. If the purchaser is foremost a gamer that carries a lot of weight. A lot more credit is being given to the PS3’s library than it deserves.
The other issue I have is that, Live is not that hard to sell if you don’t over complicate it and explain it simply. An abundance of regularly published cheap pnp games, downloadable movies and a massive always on and ready to go community.
I’m not a salesperson but I field a lot a “which console” questions in forums, and those are the two key decision points.
Excluding fanboys, the PS3 appeals to someone who puts their AV kit ahead of their games. The 360, vice versa.
48 Destyn // May 15, 2008 at 4:03 am
As a tri-console owner, I rank them in this order: 360, Wii, PS3. To qualify, I had a 360 shortly after launch, because I had already been a convert to Xbox and knew the 360 was going to offer an excellent range of features from day one - and that was as a hardcore Ps2 fanboy before I got my Xbox for Halo back in the day.
360 won it for me because it was out first, because it had a stable base with backwards compatibility, a good online lineup and an exciting array of games on the horizon. I got the HD-DVD addon and thought it was fantastic, yet another stable platform with a recognized base standard from a known name. I make regular purchases from the Arcade and full Xbox title catalog. My 360 came with a decent hard drive (at the time), a remote control, a headset and a HD cable in the box.
My PS3 was free, if it hadn’t been given as a sweetener on a mobile phone contract I wouldn’t have bought one - I own one game (MotorStorm - and I really don’t even like that) and a few items from the marketplace, which I find difficult to use and badly organized. Blu-Ray as a platform has seen too much confusion and discrepancy over standards to be viable to me as a next-gen film format, and I find generally the quality sucks. I don’t play PS2 games on my PS3, I don’t use their online service at all because I don’t want to have to buy extra peripherals for voice, keyboard input etc and I sure as hell won’t pay for a remote control. Rumble effects are too little too late, and I find motion control almost impossible to get used to in its current format. I see no games on PS3 that I couldn’t easily get - often cheaper - for 360 if they sparked my interest. Like my PSP, my PS3 catches dust - and I have only used the memory card reader once.
I use my Wii for Wii Fit and a few novelty games, and I look forward to seeing what they will come up with next. Motion control in a wand makes perfect sense and it’s clear that Ninty have put a lot of thought into the needs of their customer base. I haven’t used online yet beyond the channels, I think the method of adding friends is utterly ridiculous and I would only buy additional peripherals if they were very cheap (which thankfully they are). In some ways it’s nice to go back to simple gaming, low-def, without all the hassles.
In conclusion, PS3 loses me on many fronts. It tries to be a multifunctional machine, but can only offer me functions I already have in other, better designed and more user friendly devices. I want to view pics on a memory card? I’ll plug them into my digital photo frame. I want to watch HD films? I’ll download them on the 360 or watch them on region free HD-DVD, or on my PC using a multi drive. I want motion control? I’ll use the Wiimote and know I can quickly get used to the actions and that the gameplay will be fun, not demanding.
In a time where digital convergence is already well rooted in our lives, Sony has done too little too late - and in forcing people toward an all-in-one box has only assured that it will be bought for one function and never used for the others (in many cases, a cheap BD player). I think, long-term, Sony will come to regret this strategy - the future is modular, not inclusive.

For me i still hold the n64 as the best console ever made, but in the “next-gen” console war i go with the 360 for the fact of its main purpose is to play games and sonys is to be like your multi use for every thing you could possibly want. A ps3 user came up to me asking why the xbox hasn’t got IE and i simply replied saying that not what my consoles for i have a laptop for that. I agree ps3 is more practical but i think it goes the uneeded extra mile just to get a few more custumers instead of paying attention to the main reason for the console THE VIDEO GAMES! oh and before any one starts shouting at me saying the ps3 does pay attention and MGS4 and ff13 are coming out im a FPS kinda guy and xbox 360 deffinatly dominats the market in that area.
50 krakdol // May 15, 2008 at 5:08 am
I think there is no debate anymore. 360 is dying right now, it has been constantly outsold by the PS3 for months. Blueray victory was a big blow to MS too.
On the whole, PS3 simply offers better ans more varied exclusives (Ratchet, Uncharted, GT5, and soon MGS, LBP, resistance 2, Killzone 2, FF13…) MS has simply no equivalent to those (there are mostly generic shooters on the 360…).
And that’s even without paying for features which should be free (online play works perfectly on PS3, even on christmas, unlinke live). PS3 is perfectly reliable and silent too (no 50 % failure rate like 360… such failure rate should NEVER be accepted from any product).
Overall, PS3 is clearly the best choice for gamers.

ok im a 360/pc gamer amd i think that both sides have a valid point. however from what i have gathered about the PS3, makes me believe that it is a largely toned down PC, (internet acces + photos + skype, sorry video chat). the 360 dose have these features to, in a lesser extent - the internet accesability, however i only use my console for gamimg on my own and with friends and pc for even more gaming and anything else. i have owned a ps1, n64, gameboy (colour and sp), xbox, pc, ps2, 360 in that order. each one has brought me games that i have wanted and like. the ps3 just sadly dosent do that for me and none of its coming games have tempted me(the only thing thats done that is the sarcastic gamer playstation podcast and thats not enough
].
no ones mentioned the banjo kazooie 3 game that i have read, comes out near christmas. and personaly i dont want gears 2 as i never realy got into the first one. fable however was one of my top ten favorite games of all time (is that a forum post, if not it should be) i am greatly antisapating this game. as for the red rings, 14 out of 14 friends have not had it to date 15 including me. i bought my 360 3 months after realese. in my opinion, if you look after it properly, everything will fine :).

There’s no way I’ll buy a product which has something like 50 % failure rate, no way… Fix your product first, MS.

Oh man, the moment I saw the title of this post I knew the comments would be an all-out fanboy war.
Each console has good points and bad - the 360’s online service is second-to-none and the console has some killer exclusives, but the hardware issues and a lack of ’social’ games for a wider audience has cut down the console’s target audience. While the PS3’s online service is not as encompassing, the hardware can perform more than the 360 can (with the architecture supporting Linux), and while our exclusives list isn’t as big and the games not quite as popular (Ratchet and Clank, Uncharted) PS3’s future line-up looks more promising.

Mostly a good article, although you tread close to considering those who haven’t played an Xbox 360 as somehow ignorant; the “if you like the PS3, you just need to be educated” sort of thing.
I have all three systems, and just can’t be bothered with the whole Gamerscore thing; I love unlockables the way Ratchet and Uncharted do them, but points for the sake of points just isn’t my bag. Between that and having an apparently uncommon controller preference, I’ve stopped paying for LIVE and spend most of my online time on the PS3.
I can’t be bothered with the whole Friend Code thing, either, but I mostly play single-player or multi-player-one-couch games on the Wii.
Everyone has a preference; I’d be curious to see an article on the opposite side. What is the opinion of the 360 between PS3 owners and no-HD-console owners?
58 FratSprint // May 15, 2008 at 8:58 am
I have been bothered more and more about this… but when are we going to get cross-platform online gaming across the board? Square-enix was able to accomplish this for a game that is now 6 years old… is it not possible to take a page out of their book and apply this across the board? seriously… i have a bunch of friends who all play cod4 on 360, and while fps’s are really not my thing, it would be nice to be able to play alongside them between my weekend rpg sessions.

Grow up and say “how do” to the fanboy world!
If someone is a fanboy of something, then they are bound by the imaginary fanboy rules that they must declare all other items associated with their love “bogus”.
It’s simple, and it is a dumb thing, but it happens. Nothing is going to change as long as there are fanboys, because here’s the skinny - fanboys who say everything else sucks are huge idiots!
You can argue and argue and argue against fanboys about your side of the argument, but they are so self-involved and righteous that they won’t listen to a word you have to say, if you are saying that something is better than their love-item, or nicer-looking, or has better features…
I owned a 360 way before I got my PS3. But I don’t care. Because I love playing on them just as much. Yes, I am slightly more on the PS3 side, but that is only because you have to pay 100 pounds in the UK (thereabouts) to play online wirelessly, and I can’t afford that cost.
Stop your bickering, you two, and settle on the simple fact that makes the whole argument better - the 360 and the PS3 are both way better than the Wii. =D
You two are just jealous at the other one for having something that the other one doesn’t possess as much of - Rothbart has more posts, but Lono has more fans… lol.
Still, it’s hilarious to read this stuff. Keep up the great article fights! They’re great material! Lol…
Oh, I’d just like to point out that the comments on this article are the continually longest comments I have ever seen on any article. People really cannot agree on this argument, can they? Hopefully people will come to the conclusion that the 360 and Ps3 are both better than the Wii, and this argument will die down a bit… haha…
See! Mine is a long post too! It’s like a fanboy argumentative curse! Doc and Dave, join the debate!

One thing left out is longevity. As a 360 owner, even thought of the PS3 being the console leader in the future doesn’t mean I need to buy one now. Sony is always saying that their console is to have a 10 year+ life cycle. With me buying my 360 a year before PS3 came to the market, that means that I have a number of years (my guess is at leasat 5 or so, to not be at end of life) that I can wait before buying a PS3.
In that time I can monitor news about PSN (how much better is it going to be?), exclusives that may interest me, are my friends jumping to Sony (big pull is where the group is playing), and also wait for the price to drop. As long as I have digital downloads on XBLM and my HDDVR (cable box w/ HBO & Showtime) bluray and upscaling is not a major selling point… even though I really respect what PS3 accomplishes in SD DVD upscaling.
I just know I have time… and no am in no rush. Especially not w/ the economic troubles that the US is in. I have more important things to do w/ my spare cash (mortgage).

As it stands right now, there are very few and I mean VERY few exclusive titles for the 360 or the PS3. Most of the major games will come out on multiple platforms so everyone can be happy with what they have.
Of course, we all know that those games will look better on the 360 than on the PS3, but that is another argument alltogether.

After reading so many comments, I can only add this: only one of the companies is putting all the eggs on the same basket, and that’s Microsoft. If Sony is so convinced that their blue-ray unit is the best console of all…
THEN WHY DO THEY KEEP SELLING THE PS2 AND RELEASING GAMES JUST FOR THE PS2?!?
Everyone blames Microsoft for being too proud, but then, Sony can give them a lesson or two.

@tyrone hawk, the ps2 is targeted at a a market with gamers in the lower end of the disposable income spectrum, which turns out its the single largest market segment, because as you might not be aware 2/3 of the population of the world live in poverty, of the lucky 1/3 only a few can actually buy a 360 or a ps3
@wackyiraqi77: no i said, that there is 2 groups of people, 1 group has only the ps3 or xbox, that group will bitch and wine and say what they have is better…the group that has both will enjoy both, and see all the fanboism as idiocy…but in the end of the day ps3 is slightly better in terms of net-present-value (net present value in referent to its potential relative to the xbox360)

OK… who cares?
seriously consle wars are so stupid. All of them are good, all of them have there pros and cons, 360 has gears and halo, ps3 has uncharted and GT5,wii has brawl and zelda…
Seriously, everyone is getting so fed up about this over nothing
Ps3 seemed bad to me at the beggining and since the price dropped it is good now.
wii may seem gimicky but if you buy the classic nintendo franchise games and forget the crap it is good
360 has no blu ray but it has gamerscore and achivements
THEY ARE ALL GOOD!!!! WHY CARE ABOUT CONSLE WARS!!!

Damn. So true, Rothbart so true. i was just talking to a friend yesterday about xbox 360 acheivements (no lie) and he was like, “WTF”.
he’s a playstation 2 owner and his ps2 broke on him. I’m also a ps3 owner and he enjoys the hell out of it when i let him play. And guess what, he’s looking forward to the 80gb ps3 next month.

I think its ironic that I see an add for the 36 on a pro PS3 article.
I havent bought a system yet, and I see what you are saying, but to me, a guy who doesnt have an HDTV, so no need for blu-ray, and I dont see any real desirable games for the PS3, plus everyone I know already only has the 360, the 360 is the better choice to me.

@krakdol
sorry if i diddnt come out clear. what i meant is that my friends and i have taken a lot of care with our consoles and possibly as a result have not gotten the RROD. plus i know that MS stated that but they are fixing them for free with an extended warrenty in place. if i recall the guys talked about this in a podcast.
happy gaming
