Ever since episode one of the Sarcastic Gamer Playstation Podcast aired, I have been getting as much love from the Playstation community as I have been getting hate from the Xbox neighborhood. Considering the console war never meant a damn thing to me before (and still doesn’t), seeing as how I have alway been a proven PC addict, news that I am now a biased PS3 fanboy struck me as ludicrous, and more than a little funny.
Check out why I went with the PS3 over the 360 after the jump!
Do I like the PS3 more than the 360? Without question. Do I think the 360 sucks? No, and anyone that believes I do needs to take 10 chill pills (Pez candy of course) and go back to their Halo 3 happy place.
I agreed to co-host SG’s new Playstation Podcast because I recognized the opportunity it presented to speak out on a lot of what is going on within the Sony gaming world, a world that has been widely, and unjustly vilified by one-sided Podcasts, sites and shows. Also, the original SG podcast is NOT an Xbot show and anyone who thinks it is needs to have their hearing checked. The 360 was the first console the hosts owned and is their main gaming platform of choice, but they have no qualms about knocking the 360 down a peg, or two, when deserved. Rothbart, Frawlz and I intend to be just as critical (if not more so) of the PS3.
I may not own all three consoles, but that does not mean I have not played on all of them extensively over the past 2 years. If anyone wants to travel back in time to previous things I have written it should be obvious that I WAS a critic of the PS3. I thought Rothbart was deluded to think that Sony could bounce back, but unlike Xbots and their PS3 equivalents, I have the ability to admit I was wrong.
Why was I swayed towards the PS3, away from the 360 (which was originally ahead)? The answer to that takes into account numerous issues.
I pay enough monthly fee’s already, and I have yet to see ANY direct correlation between XBL paid subscriptions and quality support. Major down time two years in a row during the holiday season? Nice, the only time of year when I have a load of free time to play and I can’t. Having XBL drop for even two days over the Christmas break would have me foaming at the mouth. RRoD? Sure, if this was an isolated, 1 in a million occurrence, I’d consider it a non-issue. The fact that every single one of my IRL friends with a 360 has had RRoD at least once, if not multiple times is a huge negative for me. Exclusives? Sorry, not one Xbox semi-exclusive has ever made me want a 360 that badly since the great ones will make it to my PC eventually (hello superior Mass Effect). That does not mean I think Halo or Gears of War are crap (though I am not a big fan of either since few shooter titles hold my attention long) or that I cannot understand the attraction. On the whole, the games I want to play on the 360 are also available on the PS3. 25+ games with high MetaCritic scores that DO interest me on the PS3 are more than enough thank you very much. Oh wait, Ninja Gaiden II is a 360 exclusive, but I’ll live without it.
Achievements and Gamerscore mean next to nothing to me, so the lack there of on the PS3 is a non-issue. If you like’em, good for you, but I for one never got the attraction and marvel that people equate skill level with either. I admit I would like to see something basic like a competitive stat page for a given game. How many online matches have you won, how many kills do you average a match, who have you defeated etc… Anything beyond that does not interest me in the slightest. The only thing seeing that you have found all the flags or discovered all the Easter eggs in a game proves to me is that you spent a whole bunch of time achieving things that are only passably fun.

I don’t see this as a fanboy rant at all. Just a preference. Every sytem will have its faults and shortcomings. I have both and love both sytems. Personally, I do play my 360 more, but mainly because I have more games for it, and yes, I am an achievement fan. Thank you for this unbiased view PCPB, also, great job on the new podcast

I’m hoping PMPB doesn’t receive a whole heap of Xbots ranting in these here comments - it’s a perfectly balanced, mature, well-written article. Everyone has their pleasures, and he’s chosen his, and justified each side of the argument.
Now we just wait for the fanboys to invade and derail the whole thing.

You can call me a fanboy if you want, but I am not a fanboy of Microsoft or the 360. I’ll tell you what I am a fanboy of and that is XBL.
XBL makes the 360 stand out and yes it has its faults and flaws but overall it is set up good and makes playing games and keeping in contact with friends much more enjoyable.
If the PS3 had a network and online set up similar to XBL I would be all over a PS3. Right now, it would appear that the PS3 is nothing more than an average priced Blu-Ray player.
Achievements are addictive and I enjoy going for them as much as I enjoy the games. Of course, I always liked these types of things, just like I like level systems in MMORPGS. It’s something that you can say you accomplished, even if it only means something to you.

I still dont get what’s so badass about achievements, sure you enjoy challenges and all, but whats after that….
Whats your reward XBOT? free MS points?? free downloads? ummm.. unlock ables??? membership to the elite club???. No XBOT you get nothing more then personal satisfaction, and I can agree; it feels good, but for how long. Who will know what you accomplish?? who??
You guys have to seriously stop bragging so much about achievements like if it was the greatest thing since “game scores” that is so retro.
In all honestly “trophies” from PSN home, sounds like an evolution of your precious “achievements”, since atleast you will be able to SHOW OFF to your peers, but like I said whats so cool about that??
To make “achievements” such a bitchin’ concept, they need to offer AWARDS to those who accomplish them.

PMPB, if you’re a PC nut then maybe you liked Diablo? Two words…Too Human.

Why do so many people hate on other people just because they love achievemnets?
I dont get it, if I like achievments its my choice, leave me the “F ” alone!
I play games to have fun, and if achievments add to that fun than what more do they need to do?
Geez, go fold at home and stop trying to tell people what they should and should not enjoy.

Dear PacManPolarBear,
Dude to be honest with you. Even with you explaining your reasoning, you still sound biased. It’s not what you are say as much as it is how you are saying it.
After reading your rebuttal, I conclude yep, you are PS3 biased and you are well on your way to getting the right sized PS3 fanboy hat. Deny it all you like. It is what it is.
But, I ain’t mad at you. It’s your money and you should buy what you want.
All your article did, was give you more praise with your PS3 fanbase, and alienate you even further from your X 360 fanbase. But, that won’t bother you as you’re a PS3 fanboy anyway..haha
If you are going to make public statements, you really should learn how to write (spin) it to appear neutral unless it wasn’t your intention.
Later gator.

oh and Im not sure I would go bragging about being a PS3 fanboy, they are the most whiney, annoying, and bitter people on the internet.

Dont have a go at people for having an opinion!! Both consoles have their strong points. I think the PS3 has the potential to become an amazing console but it hasn’t yet but it is improving. XBL is brilliant but will I still say that when HOME is released??? Think about each consoles capability and lets see in the next year. I think the best thing for gamers is to own both consoles!! You cant deny each console has an exclusive you want to play!!

PacMan you shouldn’t let the fanboys bring you down, instead you should be happy that they are taking the time to think o you while writing there hate mail. Besides, if its any consolation, I don’t consider you bias, its great that your on a podcast, it just so happens to be that its about the PS3 and not the Xbox.
People just like to spew off hate no matter who’s the target

okay okay okay, just admit it xbot fannies, you guys are huge a$$ haters and it’s funny. I’m not gunna lie i’d rather prefer sony but there are some things better that the xbox360 dilivers. I don’t hate the 360 it’s just not better than the ps3 ya digg? And yes i have reason, i don’t need to say you guys obviously already know.

@cell
Your names cell… Your ragging on achievements and saying you don’t get it. But say Sony’s systems better because of a 3D trophy?
Achievements most of the time do unlock stuff in the game research it.
Dead Rising is a PERFECT example….
They helped kill cheats and most strategy guides all together because most of the time through the achievements you know what objectives unlock secrets in the game.
Long story short don’t knock it until you try it.

@Tugz

No ones a mind reader unless you’ve made it apparent in some sort of way I’m not seeing…

I don’t like how everything PS3 offers is a promise. with the 360, its very in your face, LIVE, Achievements, Gamerscore. Sony has been living off the success with PS2, in essence they wanted the PS3 to just sell it self on legacy alone. It was a big mistake, and its one that keep alot of consumers away. It was $599 when it dropped, and had Resistance as its only hot title. I’m one that believes Resistance ’still’ is its only title I’ve missed out on. M$ delivers on every promise, while PS3 is just a promise. why does 3 years from now matter when right now there are no games for the PS3 that I can’t get on 360, that I want to play.
