Rumors can be fun but they can also be frustrating. One thing’s for sure though… people like to talk about them. I thought I’d scrape together a handful of recent Playstation related rumors and post them to spur some discussion. You’d think at least one of these would end up true, wouldn’t you? I wonder which one it’ll be.
- 2D Trophies are coming to an XMB near you
- Firmware 2.4 will feature enhanced XMB chat features (the XMB is the Xross Media Bar or PS3’s “dashboard” for you 360 owners/PS3 neophytes)
- This next firmware is due at the time of (or before) MGS4 is released
- Sony may start charging for themes
- Daxter and Wipeout Pulse coming to PS2
- Famous PSP hacker Dark Alex setting sites on PS3
- Sly Cooper 4 is in the works
- Sony starting online gaming magazine (possibly via PS Store)
- Uncharted 2 to take place mostly in India
- PSP Firmware 4.0 feature list
Remember, we don’t claim any of these are true (but we didn’t make them up!) I’d like to hear from you. Which do you know is true? Which do you hope is true? Which do you dread being true? Sound off!

Well i’m hoping that the Trophies, Firmware having the new features, and being before or at date of mgs launch
dont know if any of them are fully true or untrue.
I don’t really see why Dark Alex would create a custom firmware for the PS3, it comes out the box able to run Linux. Unless he can develop a firmware which provides full access to the GPU it just seems redundant.
@Kiltman67: Well, natively running on the “bare metal” and running within the Linux “virtual machine” for lack of a better description are two different things.
Also, I think we’re getting ahead of ourselves assuming he’s going to whip out custom firmwares. As far as I know, they still have to find a reliable way to gain access to the firmware to begin with. All it takes is one exploit, one slip up on Sony’s part, and if the hackers can figure out how to decrypt the next update, then it’s (potentially) all over in terms of keeping tight control over the platform. Piracy on the PSP is rampant. If there were native RSX access in Linux, I think a LOT of people would be less interested in homebrew and more interested in Linux, but as it is… I can definitely see (I mean understand) the desire for homebrew code that didn’t involve the (relatively slow) linux boot process. I’m just sayin’.
Personally, I think Dark Alex working on the PS3 and Dark Alex being able to accomplish anything remarkable on it do _not_ go hand in hand. He’s a talented guy and all, but I’m actually dreading any success on his part more than looking forward to it.
You make too many assumptions, even just listing rumors. What the hell is an XMB?
Its the Xenu Martial Batallion. Defenders of the Galactic Confederacy.. Geez man.. read up on your L. Ron Hubbard before Tom Cruise sends the Thought Police after you.
I hope none of them come true, and MS wins the console war… And if the “cheapest bluray” thing is giving Sony the edge, that will stop in September 08 when the price comes down… Guy at audio store told me that date
I’m pretty sure it’s true though…
@Doc: it’s the secret club that everyone at Sarcastic Gamer but YOU knows about.
@paulmess7: Do we need to start checking IDs and membership cards at the door again?
I don’t doubt that Sly Cooper will eventually make his way to the PS3, but I don’t think it will be anytime soon. Sucker Punch is working solely on Infamous at this point and we still don’t have a release date for that game. If they intend to continue the Sly Cooper series, it will have to wait until after Infamous is released.
i’m almost sure alot of these will happen, for the 2.40 update for some reason i don’t think it’ll come out until july like i bit before e3 and if sony charged for themes i really wouldn’t care but that sounds like the start of something bad
i wouldn’t mind the rumours about the XMB upgrades being true with achievement style trophies (think R:FOM) just so long as they keep any gamerscore type crap out of there.
and as to charging for the themes, WTF sony?! why would i pay for something that i don’t even want for free. and if for some reason i did want new themes, i’d just get them for free of the web (like i don for everything else). geez, what were you guys huffing when you came up with that brilliant marketing idea?
Methinks the official PS magazine over here confirmed that Uncharted 2 will be set in India.
Yup, it’s said it “will” be set in India, and I’ve provided a hurried shot from a rubbish phone camera to back it up:

Hopefully in-game XMB and trophies will both make it into firmware 2.4. However, I’ll be happy as long as both features make it into the PS3 firmware before Resistance 2 comes out.
I really hope they have trophies for both single-player and the co-op mode, as well as multiplayer. I have a feeling I’m gonna play the hell out of that game.
Given that those are the only two issues I have with the PS3 right now…I’m gonna be pretty happy with 2.4 if these rumors turn into facts.
@Jacob816: It probably wouldn’t be a big deal if they simply limited the number of trophies you could get per game, then kept a running tally of your trophy total. Those of us that don’t care can ignore it, and those that do will have their gamerscore knockoff.
I had a suggestion about the trophies which I have sent to Sony. It basically is that instead of Trophy’s Every achievement would be money that could be used in Home. Like killing 250 guys in GTA IV would give us $20 that we could use to spend on things in Home. There could also be expensive items that cost $200 that if a person wanted the item and didn’t have enough time for getting achievements for money they could use micro transactions for the item. Do you guys think this is a good idea? This addresses the people who don’t want to spend money and the people who can.
