When it comes to making a great Sci-Fi flick, James Cameron is the man to call. There is not a Sci-Fi fan alive who has not seen the Terminator or Aliens films. Sure The Abyss was a bit boring, but we’ll let that one slide. Cameron’s newest project is a movie called Avatar, coming in December 2009. The general premise is that an ex-Marine has assumed the consciousness of an alien on a distant, and dangerous planet. Sounds cool, and like every single thing that “sounds cool” these days, there’s going to be a movie tie-in game.
I know I know, movie tie-in games inevitably suck, but wait till you hear the best part! This new title (scheduled for May 2009) may incorporate the use of 3D glasses! Someone hit the gimmick bell! *DING*
Find out all the details after the jump!
The Avatar game is a collaboration between Cameron and Ubisoft. The film version will “incorporate new intuitive CGI technologies to transform the environments and characters into photorealistic 3D imagery.” Think IMAX.
Surfer Girl kicked off the rumor that the game may also take advantage of “uber glasses technology” back in December of ‘07, saying “That Avatar game that Ubisoft Montreal is working with will ship with high-quality stereoscopic 3D glasses.”
News.com reports that James Cameron confirmed yesterday at Microsoft’s Advance ‘08 advertising conference that Ubisoft does indeed have “a stereoscopic game up and running using a standard Xbox 360 and 3D glasses.”
No confirmation on which platforms Avatar will be available on, but I think we can assume the 360 will be one of them. Seriously though? 3D glasses? I just can’t be all that hyped about something that brings to mind B-movie horror films and drive-in theaters. Yeah both those things are fun, but I’m not sure how much of an impact it will have on the game, or if the novelty-ishness of 3D glasses will help game sales or hurt them. Ubisoft has yet to confirm that the game will make use of the glasses, but given Cameron’s involvement in the project, I wouldn’t be surprised.
The movie is still a year away and since the game will not be out until a few months after the films release, we can all wait and judge for ourselves whether geek glasses have made a come back (film wise) before gamers take the 70’s nerd plunge back into the realm of 3D.

This makes me glad that my TV is 3D-ready. It apparently takes some special tech to pull it off. I doubt I’ll buy the game tie-in because, as stated in the article, they inevitably suck…But I might pick up the movie just for the novelty of watching it in 3D.

There is already a game called Avatar, right?
So what will they call the game? Hmm…
I may get it, although wearing 3D-glasses while playing a game will make you look like an idiot…
