Guitar Hero Just Jumped the Shark

May 28th, 2008 · 58 Comments

This video for Guitar Hero On Tour for the DS is not a joke. It’s not Mega 64 trying to be uncomfortably funny, it’s not loadingreadyrun bashing the DS and we certainly didn’t make this P.O.S. This is a very real video made by some douchey advertising firm that was hired by Activision.

This is the worst commercial for a video game I have ever seen. Check out the death knell for the Guitar Hero franchise, after the jump.

Check it out before Activision comes to their senses and pulls this from gametrailers.

I’m honestly speechless about this video. It’s like a douche bag sandwich with a side order of kick you in the nuts. It’s bad. Really bad… Really, really bad.

Somebody please tell me that was just a joke. Does anyone know how I could UNSEE that?

I woke up today, rolled outta bed thinking “damn today will be boring” Then I this video, and now my day is complete.

Way to go activision! Congratulations for making guitar hero a complete joke.

      Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle…

I wonder if this is the advertisement Brett Ratner did for Activision. Seriously, who is going to sit through a 4-minute commercial for a videogame? Especially one that is that bad.

ROCK OUT! Geezus, I just want to take that eyeliner pen and put it through that singer’s skull…

There’s no way, I don’t buy it. Is this an early Fiction Friday article, Lono? For this to be released somebody high up in Activision had to see it and say, “…..It’s…..PERFECT!!” I just can’t believe this got approved.

Oh yeah, and you have to yell out Rock Out! to activate Star Power if you don’t press the normal buttons? What is that about?

Mission accomplished (in regards to the video)… we’re ALL talking about the game. At first I was completely put off by the video, but as I neared the end, it was clear they were doing it in jest. The video made me laugh (although I’m not sure for the appropriate reasons) and the game may in fact suck… but I have a hard time knocking the video… I LOVE ME SOME CLOTHES! Lol!

WHO SHOULD I MAKE THIS OUT TO? YOUR MOM?

Yeah… this’ll make it to some “Top 10″ list eventually, you wait. Even if it’s the “Top 10 Worst Game Ads”

      WIGGLE, WIGGLE, WIGGLE, WIGGLE! LOL!

    • 16 blade2k6954 // May 28, 2008 at 11:09 am

      Sarcastic?

wow, everything was wrong with that commercial.

that douche didn’t even through the horns right

Who the f*** screams WIGGLE- WIGGLE-WIGGLE and doesn’t expect to get made fun of?

and honestly…. “SOMETIMES YOU CAN’T SCREAM”?! WTF?!

It’s like they wanted to make a comercial so s****y that the product would look good in comparison. CRITICAL FAIL!

Alright everyone, let’s summon Okatta and his rocking glory to right this wrong!

    • 26 irish boy90 // May 28, 2008 at 1:45 pm

the game looks really nice but this vid should have been like an in game tutorial. Its funny but not the kinda thing you release on game trailers.

I would still buy it, The Game looks good and thats the important thing for me, better check the soundtrack first. Better have some Great songs to make up for this video

    • 27 Davey // May 28, 2008 at 2:01 pm

Hilarious video. Game looks pretty good.

    • 28 Cyan // May 28, 2008 at 2:03 pm

Wow… after seeing how HORRIBLE the commercial that made it to TV was, this is just… >.<

Who thinks this game is going to destroy players’ touch screens? Anybody?

    • 29 Pakorn // May 28, 2008 at 2:06 pm

Mission accomplished. The video was f’in cheesy and funny as hell, and the game looks great. I’m sold!

    • 30 John // May 28, 2008 at 2:06 pm

That… was an ad???? WAT??? That was more like them… teaching -shudder- how to play the game… and try to be cool… That sucked. Please tell me that was fake… a parody maybe? Please????

    • 31 Pakorn // May 28, 2008 at 2:10 pm

Oh by the way - I’m really disappointed in every so-called “Sarcastic” gamer here (Lono especially!) who doesn’t recognize the obvious sarcasm/parody of old 1980’s video game commercials here. The reason for it, I think, is Guitar Hero’s particular brand of music is most heavily tied into the 80’s and 80’s culture.

    • 32 Lord Butters I // May 28, 2008 at 2:25 pm

Hey, I didn’t know the SG guys made another parody video. Heh, pretty funny how you hosted it via gametrailers and made it look real.

    • 33 Lono // May 28, 2008 at 2:25 pm

@Pakhorn - just cause your lampooning something, doesn’t necessarily make it “cool” or “funny.”

The proof is in the pudding and that video sucked.

    • 34 JJMAC383 // May 28, 2008 at 2:57 pm

I couldn’t finish it… I can’t believe what i just saw, no parody needed they did it to themselves

    • 38 Mike // May 28, 2008 at 4:03 pm

AHHHH! I just drunk a bottle of Daves insanity sauce to help me forget and I rubbed some in my eyes too. It might have been a lot funnier if Jack Black was doing that instead of a great big make-up wearing twat.

      Wow…shame…just shame.

    • 48 Sean "Rothbart" Workman // May 29, 2008 at 1:01 am

If they do this to the “real” GH games, I’ll cry fowl… you guys didn’t expect GH on the DS to be “cool” did you? Let them have their fun and DS-ize it. Think of it this way, the next time you’re bored and want to kick someone’s ass… if you hear someone shouting “Rock on!” into their hand, your job of tracking down said ass to kick just got a hell of a lot easier!

Will I buy this game? Doubtful… Did I laugh at this video? Oh yeah… Was I laughing for the intended reason(s)? I have no idea… but again, we’re all TALKING ABOUT IT… take that for what it is.

@Lono: When you mock the “Rock on!” and “Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle”… I’ll remind you of “Laugh Monkey!” It’s all in perspective. One man’s “Funny!” is another man’s “WTF is this sh*t?!” ;)

I wasn’t being sarcastic, I was simply saying it made me laugh and if its goal was to make people talk about the game, it worked. Nintendo is expert at advertising (and selling) games, products, ideas that I think are stupid to MILLIONS of people… although Activision is behind this game, it’s GOING to sell… and depending on its price, it could potentially sell very well.

    • 49 the 6th degree // May 29, 2008 at 2:10 am

      @ Lono - Best Videogame Advert…Ever.

That was awesome - I am still LMAO about - “No, that is worse than fire!!!”.

Its definately a joke - and way too long for a TV advert, but I can imagine a cut version doing really well. Here in the UK, TV adverts have taken a shift to the surreal (a guy dressed as a gorrilla playing the drum solo from “Coming in the air toninght” for a chocolate advert being the best that comes to mind).

BTW - did you check out the joke Quake Wars advert on Marketplace?

    • 51 DJ Res // May 29, 2008 at 7:02 am

      I JUST PEE’D MY PANTS!

That is the best example of “How to Kill your Brand” I’ve ever seen!

      WIGGLE, WIGGLE, WIGGLE, WIGGLE, WIGGLE…YEAH!!!!

    • 52 Lono // May 29, 2008 at 8:09 am

@ Rothbart: you couldn’t be more wrong. That piece of “advertising” makes the game look silly. It makes that kid look stupid and makes the whole thing look like an exercise in idiocy.

It’s a “groan” type of funny, which, to me anyway, isn’t funny. The whole thing makes the game look like it’s for douchebags….

      Again, not a good thing.

    • 53 Vibrant Green // May 29, 2008 at 8:14 am

I wouldn’t say this is a clever move by Activision, and lets face it it’s not big and its not funny. But the advert isn’t actually that bad.

If I have my media brain working (oh BSc bitches) then it looks like the advert is a mix of stylisation. It seems to be mocking the “kids toy” adverts you get inbetween your favourite shows on saturday morning, you know; cheesey rock music, deep manly voice explanation, fast moving camera.

The vocalist is another advert technique, you see it a lot in cleaning products and car ads, they write or parody a song specifically for their product. This is exactly the same, except they’ve got some messed up idea of a ‘Rock Star’ to actually mime in the video.

Not to mention this is more likely some internet only teaser video. We all watched it didn’t we? One up for Activision. And we’re all going to tell our friends how bad it is. Two up for Activision. Most of us are probably going to buy it just to see if it is actually that bad. Three up for Activision.

The oldest trick in the book, terrible advertisements work.

    • 54 Lono // May 29, 2008 at 10:00 am

I may have watched it, but now i’m turned off from Guitar Hero DS forever.

It didn’t “sell” me, it “repulsed” me.

    • 55 Bonemaple // May 29, 2008 at 3:46 pm

Say what you want about this ad, it IS good to see that Scott Weiland hasn’t OD’d yet! I myself am about ready to go back to air guitar! This is further proof that these companies think that all gamers are either stupid kids, or just stupid. Sheesh!!!

    • 56 Just Bob Pro // May 29, 2008 at 4:32 pm

Make it stop!!! The game looks fun but my mind hurts. Does the dude come with the game cause you could make an argument that kicking the poser in the nuts and hearing him scream on a tone that only dogs could hear would be kinda awesome.

    • 57 S3AB1SCU1T // May 29, 2008 at 5:50 pm

      O M G
Thats not the way to sell games.
i was thinking about buying that to now i think hell no.
thats the worst thing i have seen in a long time. please lono if you ever find anything like that again promise me you will never post it. please please!!!
